Ridge Racer was cool because after the game loaded you could take the disk out and put in an audio CD then control it through your in game radio. Driving and listening to your chose of music was amazing!
A playable loading screen during the Spectrum and Commodore era, must have been a pain. The amount of coding it took just to make a balloon go across the screen on the C64, was a ball ache!😂
Sadly FIFA took out the playable bits when they used the frostbite engine which is awful and is full of bugs. But haven't played one since 2016 and it be the same game
There were playable games in loading screens long before Namco patented the idea (making Namco's patent invalid, but nobody could be bothered to challenge it). There were a few games on the Commodore 64 that did this, which made a lot of sense because loading a game from tape could take four or five minutes. But it was never very popular. I don't think Namco's patent really did much to suppress the idea, its time had already passed by then. Edit: oh, you mentioned Invade-a-load at the end!
Patents are just a tax on people that like to tinker. As long as it isn't infringing on an existing or active one, they will happily take your money, which is a fair chunk of change. They don't care if it's a money spinner, as they aren't there to help you.
The polar opposite of this is Mafia: Definitive Edition. All you do for what feels like half your life whenever you die or otherwise fail is watch Tommy impatiently waiting for the game to load while in a huff
Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi Tag Team on the PSP had a better mini game loading screen in my opinion. You had to catch Senzu Beans in a basket which was also your currency. So the better you got, the more you could buy items that affected battle.
Correction... Assassin's Creed USED TO have a Sci Fi twist that allowed you to live through genetic memory until Ubisoft decided "fuck it you're in a simulation"
Years ago, my old roommate ruined my controller playing Dragon Ball Z: Budokai. I remember that loading screen and him feverishly rotating that poor analog stick.
I just wish namco would make a Galaxian 3 playable loading screen. I also wanted it to go down the same path as tekken 5 and have Galaxian 3 as an unlockable game under certain conditions. If they can do it for Starblade they can do it for Galaxian 3.
oh, this doesn't quite count, but i heard that in Fallout 3 or 4 you could play mini-games on your "pipboy". and some were quite good, including a full-on copy of...MIssile Command!
Good FIFA etiquette or sportsmanship? We're talking about video games based on a sport that is pretty infamous for having hooligans who will start riots if their team is losing or a referee makes a call they don't agree with, so etiquette is already thrown out the window to blow up a cop car.

The First Splatoon had Squid Jump and other mini games during the loading screen for online matches.
I remember playing street fighter at my brother-in-law's and thinking how cool it was it has a game you could play between rounds.
I haven't played after Street Fighter 2, do they still have them?
Oh yeah, here we go, sports time
I’ve never played a sports game before, but I’ll give it the best I’ve got
Cube Racer 2 has a nice little lobby that also serves to load the game. Wave Race Blue Storm was definitely my first experience with the concept

Invade-a-load was sometimes better than the actual game tbh.
@@Banquet42 Ah, The Joys of Invade-a-load. Pretty sure it used the same music from One man and his Droid if I'm not mistaken.

the PS1 Fantastic Four game had a fun racing minigame on the loading screens
I remember Tekken doing playable loadings twice: in 1 & 5
Galaga

Okay, not expecting Doctor Who's Cybermen to appear here, thanks
Kudos for the Dead Man's Shoes clip!!

What about Test Drive Overdrive The Brotherhood Of Speed for PS2 that game has a playable loading screen in the form of Pong.

The PS4 remake of Shadow of the Beast had a simple loading screen minigame where you could punch enemies from the Amiga original.
