Osipova redefined GIselle for me. She is the most unclichéd Giselle I have ever seen. She is genuinely spooky and ghostly, and the melancholy of the character permeates every nuance of her performance. Every little detail of her movements feels like it has a purpose and brings something to the storytelling. Fantastic.
You have written a most insightful description of Osipova's performance. However I don't see her as 'spooky and ghostly'. She is not yet a Wili - she has no wings. (I owe that insight to Tsiskaridze's talks on Giselle). But that, in my opinion only adds to the pathos and melancholy you describe. She is suspended for the space of one night somewhere between the human young girl who loved to dance and a spirit - which is what she will become when she returns to the grave. Osipova is a truly heartfelt and moving Giselle.
I think Osipova greatly benefits from joining Royal Ballet and vice versa. Her Giselle with Royal Ballet is the most character-centric than with other companies, and I think this is because Royal Ballet put a lot emphasis on the storytelling aspect of the ballets. You can't help but feel deeply for Osipova's tragic, naïve Giselle.
@Frederico. I second that a thousand times. No-one in the world like her. Not only her technique but also her intense musicality, high poetic intelligence, brilliant and daring analysis of characterization...and sheer love of the dance. She is a gift. Like La Fracci indeed was.
Although what really strikes me is the sheer sadness Osipova conveys through her unique "lifeless" Giselle, I am still in awe by the fact that the orchestra has to specifically slow down the tempo in order to wait for her to come back to the ground.
she is simply beyond this world i can’t even begin to explain.. never have i ever seen a ballerina who is the best at every role she’s given. In my mind she was the best Kitri, best Giselle, Best Nikiya, Best Gamzatti, etc. She picks up on every nuance, every piece of detail their is in the character, or accents in the music and adds her own flare onto that, not taking it for granted. so many ballerinas try to stay “pretty” or “regal” and stiff in their upper movements. Osipova is one of the only great ballerinas i’ve seen not being afraid of letting go. She isn’t afraid to be “ugly” and give herself to the character, adding tremendous artistry, etc. I can go on and on about her. there needs to be a higher rank than principle JUST to give to her
Claire Della Penna There is a higher rank than principal: Prima Ballerina Assoluta. In the whole history of ballet, only 11 women have reached that position.
@@rebeccahowie623 There’s no definitive criteria or organization. Sometimes it is given by renowned, influential ballet masters. Sometimes it is the government or royal court of the ballerina’s home country that bestows the title upon her.
She is the Callas of ballet. She literally set the bar to a degree that probably won't be surpassed in this century. She is, like Callas, completely at one with the music. And the technique? Perfection.
The ballet Giselle breaks my heart, I almost can't watch it... no one brings the character to life and death the way Osipova does. Her Giselle is from another world. She truly looks like a spirit and not a human.
My goodness. I just watched a couple of versions with other dancers and nothing comes close to this. She brings the otherworldly to life here. So effortless. No one else could make it look like this.
Superb! The best Giselle I have ever seen. She really connects with this role in a completely unique way. The abandon she brings to it, and those incredible jumps-what a spectacular combination. Truly fantastic!
I was lucky to see this actual performance live! and a decade later those gazelle like leaps still haunt me, truly the best Giselle I've ever seen. Great that it is on RUclips for all to see, its a chilling masterclass.

Natalia Osipova siempre maravillosa!!! Es un placer inmenso verla danzar!!! Deja ver su alma a travez de sus movimientos!!! Nunca me cansaré de aplaudirla y admirarla!!!

I think I do understand what you mean by saying 'light', specially here in Giselle...and still, I do understand the other comments who see this light in M Nuñez, too... I think they have both a very gorgeous, yet very different technique, and they have both that light hard to find in even very excellent dancers...they are just so very different...it's a different light, a different fragility, a different love...but still, wonderful both... I think this is what art is all about...
Osipova aka the flying ballerina is always great with jumps and leaps. But I have to say I overall prefer Svetlana Zakharova in this role for the weightless “floating” across floor characteristics rather than just high jumps. This was a bit too dramatica noir for me.
Fahriye Demir she is always a bit stiff in her upper body however her perfect lines are better suited for a ballet like Giselle. Too flexible a body that compromises those lines will not have a good effect in a Giselle ballet which emphasize a lot on the lines especially the second act where the ghosts need to “float” across the ground. And Svetlana owns those float lines. Natalia on the other hand is a little bit too “bouncy.” I actually like Natalia better as the white swan than Svetlana in Swan lake. However nobody can beat Svetlana’s black swan.
@@fahriyedemir5495 I agree! Zakharova seems more suited for 'regal' roles like Odette/Odile, whereas Giselle, as a peasant and a wili, does not have to be 'graceful'
@@farinachairunnisa457 it’s not about “graceful” but the lines and whether you can produce the effect of a ghost. For example Juliet is a very graceful role that emphasizes on upper body, and Zakharova is terrible at dancing Juliet due to her stiff upper body. White Swan needs to be graceful but Tchaikovsky’s music is actually dark and dramatic, and the white Swan actually emphasize a lot on upper body especially the arms, which is why Lopatkina is so good in that role despite having rather stiff legs. so Osipova’s dramaticism and her nice Port de Bras actually (surprisingly) works with it overall. But Giselle is both classical in the music as well as dance, so lines need to be perfect, footwork needs to be delicate and barely touches the ground. These things Zakharova excels at.
IMO, Zakharova looks as if she has zero relationship with her Albrechts. I've never found her death scene credible, whereas Osipova makes it seem inevitable. Moreover, Zakharova, while lovely in Act II, never seems unearthly the way Osipova does. She does the steps in a pretty way but they add up to nothing. There is no tragedy. And her arms have never been loose... she's very tense in her shoulders.
Она прекрасна!!!! Но почему на ней такое не красивое платье????? Вот у Улановой или Семеняки воздушное, лёгкое белое-пребелое!!!!!!!! А тут..... Разочарование...
I can't help it. She does have good technique but she just always looks like a ham actress. Much too much. Perhaps it looks about OK from the back of the dress circle - hard to tell. But in close up ... please, no ... spare me the ham and eggs. And her lines really don't look good here. Very broken.
I agree with your point of overacting. Act II is all about being ethereal and floaty with nuances/ subtlety not over dramatic. Osipova lacks the floatiness to convince me of an ethereal ghost. Also idk why ppl rave about her jumps. Sure it does look ‘great’, as impressive physical feats do. But not appropriate in this role. It’s too ‘in your face’
Acosta incredible- Osipova great technique, and elevation, but lacking warmth, and her arms, are they extra long? Or because she is so thin! Not an appealing look.
