kimis808 it was a team effort. Band parents were a huge part of the success, and I mean that in more than just from a financial aspect. Volunteering to help chaperone, load and unload the truck, show up everywhere we played, and much more. They let us focus on the show, the directors do their parts, which gave us a chance. ... and yes, I was a part of the band that year.
This show inspired me to be a band director from a small west Texas town. Watched this video countless times through Junior high and high school. Love that Reagan continues with their unique drill and music style to this day.
This was my junior year of high school. I still remember watching them in semifinals in the stands and our entire band was on our feet cheering at the end. We were amazed at how incredible this show was and how talented the band was.
Our director showed us this as an example of a great show and I fell in love with it immidiately but I could never find this version, so thanks! Love the music, and the different angles give it an even better feeling. It's my favorites too.
Reagan's presence is greatly missed at the national level. They were never my favorite band then, but watching these old videos now...makes me realize how much they really pushed the envelope and activity. So unique. Nothing like this right now though there are great bands.
Westfield's snare line gave them a VERRYYYY narrow victory over this. I watched both of these shows live when I was 11 in the RCA dome. And now i'm 26 and think about these shows at least once a year.
It's definitely difficult..The school is in a somewhat wealthy side of the city with large support from the district/parents. Paying high prices to get certain musical arrangers are vital also. Staff was as large as a typical 5A high school however w/additional techs and other support staff. Structure of the program and how it's ran inside and outside of rehearsal with staff or student leaders. Nurturing students in middle school is also key especially if they feed into a specific high school.
Most of what you said is 100% accurate, however the part on the high prices to arrangers isn’t quite that straight forward. The show was written and arranged by the directors of the band and color guard, including drill and guard choreography. They did have their own company on the side writing shows so not privy to finance side. Staff was large but not all were employed by the school.
How could you hate this music! LoL! I loved it personally, but I guess it's not for everybody. The 2nd Movement of LIncolnshire Posy...GOD...I never would have thought a marching band would perform it, and definitely not as musically as they did. I felt my very soul stir that year when they played it!
This show is strong in all categories..music,marching,general effect. Back in my high school marching days('94-'98) in Texas I saw great bands like Spring,Westfield, and Duncanville. Those bands dominated because they were fundamentally sound. Music play is always big with judges scoring..it always was back then and still now. In 2003 I felt like Regan had the best(coolest) show but.. Westfield's sound is top notch and that is what judges want to hear..MUSIC.
It's very interesting how the shows from '02 to '05, which were the best, seemed to parallel each other. For instance, '02 was "The journey WITHIN" and '03 was "BEYOND perimiters". Also, '04 was "synergy", and if you ever visit the RRHS band hall (because Im in tge band) you will see the definition of synergy on the wall, which includes the words "distinctive elements", which was followed by '05 "You never know" so the shows really make sense and are easy to connect with.
In a previous show the black plume was a tube on top of the differing color that they could slide on and off while seated. The part in the middle where they make a cluster around the trumpet soloist is a bit reminiscent of that, but tongue in cheek because they did it the year before
Andrew English me too, but Westfield deserved to win. It wasn’t quite as close as the final score sheet showed. Had it not been for some penalties getting off the field, the real difference was .25 in favor of Westfield.
The best show ever in my opinion. I am addicted to this show through and through. Maybe it's because they play Grainger... Hmm... Love it, anyway! The should have one that year.
Yes Westfield was "cleaner". But Reagan is still my favorite. Reagan brought a different energy to the field that can never truly be re-created. Reagan truly played music for the sake of music! Being strong in technique is important (Regan wouldn't have been 2nd without some degree of mastery.). But more importantly, they made their shows true works of art!
same here. my school is preparing for it right now. i love it! the woodwind part is pretty killer compared to our show last year, but i love expeirenceing a show that makes me soo excited. love it. great job!
i don't mean to rain on your parade, cuz im a HUGE Reagan fan (in fact i've posted some videos of them on my account) but that part at the end where they get back to the X, that wasn't the band, that was all percussion (synthesizer) only the trumpet section plays before the trumpet soloist, but that still doesn't take anything away from the greatness of this show.
It's because football is big in Texas, so guess what else is... marching band! I came to school up north in NY and from what I've been gathering... most states don't take band as seriously as Texas. There's nothing wrong with saying Texas is better at band, because it's true. Most states aren't as determined in marching, so of course Texas would be better.
@qdrummer92 Oo, I know! I actually go to Ayala, and my brother was in the show. And just watching it made me cry. Just seeing people in marching band this beautiful music brings a smile on my face
What happened to this? Nowadays it's all about putting in extravagant props and bands trying to outdo each other with themes. What happened to simply playing amazing music? This band doesn't need anything but clean drill and incredible sound.
Musickt196 Watch ORHS, the last decent band without props and themes taking center stage...seriously, once our "props" were freaking rifles with hula hoops around them. Also we placed 17th at Super Regionals so...
haha. i love the colored plumes. but i'm confused as to certain color schemes... i saw this same video yesterday in my band class, only the guard outfits, flags, and the pink plumes were all blue......was that a mistake?
How does this happen?? Money??? How many are on staff? Do these students have private instruction on the side?? I just wonder how a band gets to this point.
yeah, i mean i do have the 2003 San Antonio regional, but that one has the colorguard dropping alot of rifles, and also the obvious technical difficulties in the pit. lol. Plus, I prefer the RCA dome to the Alamodome. It's just a better background, or something....maybe the lighting, idk, I'm dumb. lol.
very good high school band no doubt, i appreciate how they push the limits pretty successfully . Althought, i'm not digging the full black uniforms, i think if they can do such an awesome job with the show id like to see their feet better, makes it seem like they are masking something O: . But great show no complaints (=
If pay attention a lot stuff wrong this show and other one your talking about. The Box start corners are not perfect when running in this part is very exposed and many other things.
good show. i think the only reason westfield won is because they were more artistic, and thats what the judges mainly look for, but i still think reagan should of won.
The very first time I saw this show I found it sooo incredibly boring. I think it was becuz the first reagan shows I watched were "You Never Know" and "Synergy" so i guess i kinda expected this one to be like that. After watching this several more times, it grew on me and is now my 2nd favorite show ever. I'm currently trying to track down where i can buy this dvd, if anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it
Westfield won by 0.25 on actual score, but had a 0.20 penalty for not getting off the field fast enough after the show was over. Was a tough night, but to only lose by that much going first in finals, we set the bar high. Another fun fact: despite both schools being in Texas, Westfield dropped from following UIL practice rules which did not restrict them to 8 hours after school like Reagan. Not an excuse, just putting some additional color to the story here.
Honestly who else is still watching this in 2019. One of my top 5 favorite shows from BOA Grand Nationals
🙋♂️
This has and always be my favorite and my alma mater won this year
Yay Reagan! As a band parent, just have so much respect for the program, the history, the directors, the kids, the school, the fellow parents!
kimis808 it was a team effort. Band parents were a huge part of the success, and I mean that in more than just from a financial aspect. This was my first introduction to Bands of America. Still remains my top favorite show ever.
Same!
One of my favorite all time HS shows.
Our director showed us this as an example of a great show and I fell in love with it immidiately but I could never find this version, so thanks! Love the music, and the different angles give it an even better feeling. It's my favorites too.

For people in this band. You guys are too amazing for words!!!!
I love it.

Which is why Regan won GE and Westfield won music. The music score is 60%.
this is truly the best boa show ever. reagan deserved to win. this show was well executed. very nice job to all those in this band.
It's very interesting how the shows from '02 to '05, which were the best, seemed to parallel each other. For instance, '02 was "The journey WITHIN" and '03 was "BEYOND perimiters". first show i had ever seen live at nationals and i was floored. that opening statement gives me chills every time..ya'll were amazing.
In a previous show the black plume was a tube on top of the differing color that they could slide on and off while seated. The part in the middle where they make a cluster around the trumpet soloist is a bit reminiscent of that, but tongue in cheek because they did it the year before
Reagan should have won Grand Nationals that year...
I agree. No offense but Westfield's props didn't make sense to me. I wish Reagan could've won.
Andrew English me too, but Westfield deserved to win. It wasn’t quite as close as the final score sheet showed. Had it not been for some penalties getting off the field, the real difference was .25 in favor of Westfield.
My cousin was the head director for this band! What an incredible performance.
This year the Reagan band had a really good show. Got 5th at BOA San Antonio, definatley coming back from their split with Johnson high school.
My second favorite BOA show next to Lassiter HS 2002.
My favorite show of all time, still.
I was in this show!! :D
That’s pretty dang awesome, we’re y’all as amped up as we still are today?
ur old lol jk
Booker DeWitt Lucky !!
Great show!
The best show ever in my opinion. I am addicted to this show through and through. Maybe it's because they play Grainger... Hmm... Love it, anyway! The should have one that year.
I can't wait to march on that field this summer!
Yes Westfield was "cleaner". But Reagan is still my favorite. Reagan brought a different energy to the field that can never truly be re-created. Reagan truly played music for the sake of music! Being strong in technique is important (Regan wouldn't have been 2nd without some degree of mastery.). But more importantly, they made their shows true works of art!

still gives me goosebumps
I love this show soo much!
You said it. It's as simple as that. This one in particular will never be copied or beaten. It's impossible
edit: 13 years later; still wow!
absolutely breathtaking!!!
I think we finally have. It'll take a year or two for the numbers to go bak up, but the band will be back up there.
The saxophone solo was amazing I wish I could do that on my saxophone.
i don't mean to rain on your parade, cuz im a HUGE Reagan fan (in fact i've posted some videos of them on my account) but that part at the end where they get back to the X, that wasn't the band, that was all percussion (synthesizer) only the trumpet section plays before the trumpet soloist, but that still doesn't take anything away from the greatness of this show.
in my opinion the best high school show ive ever seen well tied next ayalas the road not taken show
well I'm glad this show is on here. oh, I also found out the composer of Malaguena. it's Ernesto Lecuona.
I've seen Spring. Great stuff! I believe they had the same drill writer that Cavies had at the time.
This is amazing. That drill is way cmplex and they pull it off like it's nothing. Well done.
Without doubt, the best show not to win Grand Nationals.
That fucking drill at the beginning, what the fuck that shit is sexy.
Watch Present day drill 2012-2016
you know a show is good if it snags you in the first 10 couple of seconds . . . this show did just that.
nice sax solo, very nice tone
This show I've always felt was worlds better than Westfield in finals. Westfield just felt down to me that night..
Does anyone have the high cam for this show?
They were definitely firing on all cylinders that night.
Does anybody know what the music selections are in this show?
What happened to this? Nowadays it's all about putting in extravagant props and bands trying to outdo each other with themes. What happened to simply playing amazing music? This band doesn't need anything but clean drill and incredible sound.
You should see what we are doing now.
Musickt196 Watch ORHS, the last decent band without props and themes taking center stage...seriously, once our "props" were freaking rifles with hula hoops around them. Also we placed 17th at Super Regionals so...
Draco491Central we placed 7th at grand nationals last year
lol ok
Jump to 2019 and Reagan is arguably the best in the nation with a show that has no props.
2020 peeps!
Per chance does anyone have a copy of the sax solo in the opener?
American Fork Marching Band 2009: The Greatest Generation @ Red Rocks
There's alot of the same themes in that show
Malagueña is by Ernesto Lecuona
What's the name of the opening saxophone Solo.....
Looks like they adapted military style drill formations to corps style marching
I love this show sooo much.
at 8:03 there is a marchers who moves at a stand still because she didn't make to her spot on time right off the 40 on the left
haha. i love the colored plumes. but i'm confused as to certain color schemes...
i saw this same video yesterday in my band class, only the guard outfits, flags, and the pink plumes were all blue......was that a mistake?
@illBUrFriend How's the Reagan Band now? I heard Churchill lost their director also.
Lincolnshire Posy
Its not like they will reverse any Results from 2003 in BOA so stop complaining people!
Exactly.
Some goods bands come from Oklahoma as well.
where is the saxophone solo from?
How does this happen?? Money??? How many are on staff? Do these students have private instruction on the side?? I just wonder how a band gets to this point.
You should see are show now, look at last years Reagan Marching Band Every(one)
Bo Boutwell yes all of the above + incredible support from family/community and Fine Arta Directors
WOW high school ?
yeah, i mean i do have the 2003 San Antonio regional, but that one has the colorguard dropping alot of rifles, and also the obvious technical difficulties in the pit. lol. Plus, I prefer the RCA dome to the Alamodome. It's just a better background, or something....maybe the lighting, idk, I'm dumb. lol.
i agree with you
DAMMMN.
It's just a huge huge continuous process.
very good high school band no doubt, i appreciate how they push the limits pretty successfully . Althought, i'm not digging the full black uniforms, i think if they can do such an awesome job with the show id like to see their feet better, makes it seem like they are masking something O: . what do you mean almost dci level, this is like just likedci shows lol
well, i mean, it was the exact same performance. so....maybe the projector?
Jennnaa.... ):
5:08 to 6:20 is gorgeous :)
If pay attention a lot stuff wrong this show and other one your talking about.
The Box start corners are not perfect when running in this part is very exposed and many other things.
6:29 BEST PIT EVER
Don't forget Slavyanskaya.
Ahahahaha! Will anyone ever know?
Movement 3
They were still good 2006 they just aimed for a different style so they could fair better in UIL
Then can't forget Carmel, Avon, and Marian catholic i think?
They weren’t there that year. Lassiter in Georgia was also really good but only showed up every 4 years.
@Thetubaeddie Cool story, bro
good show. i think the only reason westfield won is because they were more artistic, and thats what the judges mainly look for, but i still think reagan should of won.

saxophone.
@oneonetwosix1126 They were. Westfield won by .05 over Reagan.

great show...and i'm not a BOA fan
Ronald Reagan Band > Cavaliers. Just sayin'.
either way westfield won, they were better, bottom line..
