Thank you Alec. I began to play bowls last July 2023. I'm 90 years old but pretty fit and I do enjoy a game every week. I am improving almost every week and that is a real buzz..Your video was a great help. Looking forward to more of the same. Cheers.
That is great to hear. I played a chap last week who is also 90, although he looked much younger, he also played amazingly well. There are not many sports where you can play competitively at 90, but this is what makes bowls such a unique sport. I also watched a game a few years ago between a lady in her 80's and a young lad still in his teens, again, not many sports provide that opportunity. The experienced lady won too, her short jack shots were awesome, and although she struggled on the longer ones her experience got her through. What a great game it was. I hope you continue to enjoy the game for many years.
Thank you Alec, I find myself coming back to your videos all the time. Your Bowls tips have been of great value in helping me learn the game of Bowls. Thanks again, Barry. NSW Australia
Thanks Alec! My wife has said she would like to take up bowls so we turned to You Tube and found your video. We found it most helpful! Thank you 😊...Next step...contact the local club!
Good luck with getting started. The summer season is drawing to an end, certainly by mid September the outdoor clubs stop bowling, unless the club has artificial grass. Hopefully there is an indoor club nearby, which are open from September. Let me know how you get on. 👍

Hi Alec. I have really enjoyed watching the world indoor bowls championships on the BBC and having retired recently i thought it might be a sport I might like to take up. Having never played I am a little apprehensive but having watched your first video which I really enjoyed and found very informative, I really feel inspired to give it a go. Simple informative video with all the necessary need to knows I just moved to Spain where there is a bowls club up the road ...will give it a go now thanks to your video Thanks Alec.
Thank you Alec, a lovely presentation. I’ve had to give up tennis due to spine fusion. I am hoping that bowls will be a suitable alternative for me. On to your next video now. Cheers from NZ.
Nice video! I use a simple thought that the bowl is going to curve towards the direction (left or right of center) of the side of the bowl in my hand which has the small circle. So I aim my release towards a point on the opposite side of the small circle.
There are several methods, if it works then that is all that matters. I tend to have an aiming point along the line that I am aiming for, maybe 3-5 metres in front of me. It works for me, but others find aiming at the far ditch or something near the ditch works for them, it's just finding the best way that works for you. :)
Nice video Alec. Ironically, I lived in Frimley in the 80’s as a teenager. I live in Middlesex now and have just taken this marvellous game up. Having coaching at the moment. I’m being praised by my coach for having a lot of natural ability. A pity I didn’t take it up back then instead of the age of 52.... look forward to more vids from you and maybe we can have a game one day....
Hi Kevin, Thanks. I know Frimley very well, it is a nice place. There is a good indoor bowling club just off the Frimley Road. Great you are enjoying your bowls and the fact you are a natural. It would be great to play you if you are ever down this way.
@@LawnBowlsforFun It was great. I'd been a tenpin bowler in my 20s, (40 years ago) and I picked it right up despite the slower delivery and that tricky bias! At least I no longer have to put a spin on the ball myself, it's built into the bowl. Folkestone Bowls club seem like a friendly bunch. I've become a member and look forward to improving, playing games and many years of enjoyment of a new sport. I'll be going along this week to watch the Ladies team playing Lyminge. games. Your videos are so helpful...thanks again!
@@laurasibley6293 I have known a few ex ten pin bowlers take up bowls and they have quickly become good players as they soon find the line. Weight takes longer, but once that is sorted it all clicks. Good luck, and enjoy your bowls. 👍
Thanks Very much for taking the time to create this Video Alec. I am about to join my local Bowls club which is only about 5 Minute walk from where I live. I Used to watch my Uncle play there when I was a child and I thought I had better try it myself at 53 years of age. I have played a full 21 end game during an Open day and found it a wonderful game as you rightly suggest in your Video. But I felt that a bit of further information before I make a fool of myself and end up bowling the wrong Bias over someone else's Rink would be prudent. I am really looking forward to meeting new friends and having some fun. Your Tutorials are excellent and I find them very informative. Thanks again, I feel I am a little better prepared now, and I will watch you other instalments shortly. Kind Regards. Andy
@@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks Alec... I have now Joined my local club and I have been made very welcome by all. Enjoying my new activity. Thanks for replying to my messages. Kind regards. Andy
I'm here because of a Homestead mission in Assassin's Creed 3 where you have to play this game. I didn't understand it. I thought I did but I was off. I was throwing the bowl at the jack trying to hit it, then the jack would fly away. I thought hitting it was the object. Thanks for the correction, hopefully I'll win next time.
Fantastic, im always up for people spreading the bowls message! I was thinking of doing another channel or playlist myself to try and introduce a young spin on things. Keep up the good work mate.
Hiya Alec..just joined my local bowling club. Never thought of me trying bowls being a female just turned 40 felt being an odd one out. Not a chance 🙃 enjoy every minute of this game. No clue about the game but your videos are great and I’m learning more more every day👌
Thank you so much for that. Our local club in Arnside, Cumbria has an open day tomorrow which I'm keen to attend. At least I now have a basic knowledge of what to expect, not having bowled before. I'll never catch up with your 35 years experience though, as I'm 76 already !
@@LawnBowlsforFun I hadn't realised it, but they play crown green bowls up here, so I had to relearn some of the points I'd picked up from your video as the rules are quite different. Nevertheless, I'm loving it and hoping to join the club. Best wishes.
@@trumpeter699 ahh yes, crown green. I have never played myself. The goal is the same, get near that jack, but the game quite different in many ways. I hope some of what I say helps though.
Just started last week, had one taster session and 2 coaching lessons. We have been told you have to have both feet on the mat when you line up, but can step off when one foot when you actually bowl.
Hi Robin, I think some coaches like to stress how important it is to think about the shot you are about to take, so they suggest you stand on the mat and then prepare yourself, but part of the preparation can then mean only one foot (or part of one foot) being on the mat before you start your delivery. I myself have my right foot on the mat, but the left foot is slightly in front of the mat to one side. The rule from the Laws of the Sport of Bowls states: 7.1 Before delivery a player must be standing on the mat with all or part of at least one foot on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or bowl, the player must have all or part of one foot on or above the mat.
Hi Alec, I really enjoyed your video and the information was spot on but - size of the bowl/s were not mentioned! When I first took up the game with tuition from a mate who used size 3 bowls, but after buying myself a set I found I required a smaller bowl, so I bought a size 2, I am now down to a size one which I find better to hold in my hand! But finding the that right size of bowl for me had cost me! Bowls for fun is spot on! Members are great win or lose, not like my golf mates who can't take it when they lose! I love this game, but sad that my first full season never was due to this virus! I was looking forward in joining a team, or pairs etc this season, now we are finding that the indoor bowls may not start till January up here in Scotland! I hope to click onto your other videos Alec!
Hi Alan, yes, it is very important to use a size of bowl that is best for you, so many players use bowls that are simply too big for their hand. I also use size 1, but started using 5's as that was what I was told I needed. let's hope next year we can play normal bowls. Cheers.
So pleased I’cave found your channel. Please would you explain the duties of the different potions ie Lead, no 2, no 3 and the skip. I’m a novice and not confident playing anything other than lead, but my club likes us to swop positions, without coaching the correct roles. Thank you so much! Great series 👏👏👏
Yes, it is a shame more younger people don't play, but things are changing slowly. In fact the best players in the UK all tend to be younger, but it is still a fact that most are in the 50+ age group. I think the dress code in the UK has not helped, but thankfully clubs are changing to coloured strips now, so that will help. In Australia they are well ahead of us on that front, but we are getting there, slowly but surely. :)
Hi Alec, I have been bowling for just over a year and your videos have been absolutely brilliant in teaching me the game, rules and etiquette. Thank you! I am now the secretary of Zurgena Bowls club in Spain and am designing a new website for the club. I wondered if you had any objections if I linked to your RUclips channel so our new members could benefit from your experience? Best wishes, Tony
Can you please do more of your channel on the disabled and indoor Bowls because I am new to the game as I have watched my family do it for a few years now
Thanks Alec. Can you give me a tip on how to judge the distance of the bowl I’ve just thrown, is to the jack? If I am standing on the mat, I cannot tell if I am 2 ft or 5ft short of the jack. I have a hard time judging my weight and adjusting accordingly. Thanks 🙏🏻
Yes, it is hard to judge distance, I agree. If there is someone down that end, ask them if you are not sure, in fact a brief indication of length should always be given by them, as often you have no idea. The times I have been wrong is countless, so if in doubt, ask, or visit the head. Thanks George.
I have just retired and asked if I could take up bowling with a local group. They said yes so your videos will be extremely useful. Have you got links to all your videos ??? Thank you so much and also for your encouragement and enthusiasm 😊
If you press onto my 'Lawn Bowls for Fun' link in any of my vids, or just search for it, you should find it. I am glad they have helped you, thanks for the kind comments.
Hey thank you for such a great video! i used to play bowls socially, just coming back to it after many years and i notice you don't put your feel close together when you delivery i was always taught top put feet close together, facing the green I'm going to take and to select a spot in the bank to aim at. I'm legally blind i use a scope to see where my bowls finished so your idea of selecting a focal point close to the mat seems like a much better idea than trying to focus on blurry bank objects! I'll try it try t next roll up! do you always have your feet that far apart though?
I must admit, I find having my feet close together makes me feel unbalanced. Although I do have a particularly poor balance system so it affects me more than others. Yes, some players start with their feet together, then step forward to bowl. If that works then great, Others who are less balanced have their feet slightly apart. I always say do what is comfortable for you. Let me know if aiming closer to the mat works, it should, but everyone is different, I do know bowlers who swear by the bank method, which is fine. :)
I’m an avid lawn bowler and certified instructor like Alec. It’s a great game, easy to learn and a game one can play for a lifetime. But, we’re simply not going to attract new (& young) bowlers by playing games to 21 ends. The world has changed! People now are attracted to activities that are of short term duration. If lawn bowling continues to play in a fashion consuming 2+ hours, we’re not going to attract the new bowlers to which Alec refers in his excellent videos! Q. Why does a singles match play to a set number of points while the other disciplines (pairs, triples & fours [rinks]) play to a set number of ends?
Yes, I could not agree more. There has been a step in the right direction this year with pairs and rinks Nationals and County games being reduced from 21 to 18 ends, and yet triples is still 18, which does not make sense. 16 ends would be better for triples. But will it stay like that? I have heard that maybe not, but that would be a mistake in my opinion. I know many bowlers who now only play indoors as they like the 2 hour format. Although I know players who do not want change. So either way you will not please everyone. But to encourage new people, I agree with you, games must be of a more reasonable length, certainly not 3 hours which can be the case.
I'm 50yrs old and I'm seriously interested in taking up bowls.. I've only ever bowled once before years ago so I'm looking for as much advice as possible
Nigel, If you are near me I am happy to meet up and give you four free sessions either indoors soon or outdoors when the summer season starts. If you are not local to me I can point you in the direction of someone near to you. email me on lawnbowlsforfun@gmail.com
Hi Alec It’s sending down the jack I am having the biggest problem with , it always seems to go off one side or the other & sometimes out of bounds , do you think it’s the way I’m holding it ,I’ve not been told to hold it like you do ,I will give that a go today when I go for a session
Yes, losing the line with a delivery of the jack can happen. On my first video I show the best method to hold the jack, (see 8 minutes in) which although it won't guarantee to solve the problem, should help. So three fingers underneath and the thumb on top. I hope it helps.
@@LawnBowlsforFun thank you Alec ,after watching the clip again I have now sorted out my delivery of the jack & regularly send it fairly straight down the green , I’ve really enjoyed watch your channel it’s helped my immensely with my game
Hi Alec, I have just taken up the game (July) last year, then indoor bowls up until the virus shut us down. I found through time (games) the secrete in the delivery is getting the right knee and bowl down low as possible to the grass to have any chance in making my intended line of aim! But I am 70 years young, very active every day, but find it hard to get low to the ground constantly at each throw of the bowl, I tried M King stance and it felt good and comfortable, but again finding it hard to throw with constant accuracy. So any tips in how to get down low without loosing balance! Cheers!
Hi Alan, I agree, the secret to consistency is to get down as low (but comfortably) as possible so the bowl rolls onto the surface rather than bounce there from higher up. I now use a fixed stance myself as I find I am more consistent using that method. I also see a lot of bowlers take a huge step forward which is not ideal as the balance can be an issue. With me balance is a big issue, so I do know how it affects the bowl.
Hi Alec, tried my first taster session at the club open day last weekend, now looking forward to more coaching. I just wanted to ask when you were bowling on the forehand your right foot pointed to he right, in the direction you wanted to bowl, but on the back hand your foot pointed straight down the green and you seemed to twist slightly to deliver the bowl. Is there a technical reason for that or is it just a personal thing? At this stage I’m keen to know everything about the basics. Loved your video and have clicked subscribe.
I face the direction I am bowling, and try to have my feet pointing that way as well, but sometimes it is more comfortable having my feet at an angle, however, my body is still pointing in the direction I am bowling, well mostly anyway. :)
No, it is the front of the mat, when placed on the green, that needs to be a minimum of 2 metres from the ditch. Although I know some think it is the rear part of the mat once placed on the green, but that is incorrect. Yo can of course take the mat up the green, as long as the front of the mat is not closer than 23 metres from the 'T' at the other end of the green. Thanks for the question.
@@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks. Now I am still confused. If the front of the mat is at the 2 meter mark, then the back will "protrude" backwards towards the ditch on the end one is bowling from. Thus one could be bowling from e.g. 1.6 meters from the ditch?
Thanks for your feedback comments. I have now joined a local bowling club and learning more. May graduate to Size 1 albeit size 00H is good learning ground.

Thanks, I am glad it has helped you. Good luck with your bowling.
Watching your videos as inspired me to have ago at indoors bowls. Thanks
That is awesome! I hope you like it. Let me know how you get on.
Thankyou for a useful video for beginners. I am beginning to understand the game better.
Brilliant, and thanks.
Helped a lot Alec! I'll be having a taster session at my local club, Folkestone, in two days. Hopefully the start of a new pastime.
Great, let me know how you get on. I hope you enjoy the session.
i had to play this today for sports day this taught me a lot THANKS ALEC!!
Glad to hear it! I hope you did well.
Thank you for the video series very helpful and I recommend to new bowlers in our club
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the recommendations.
Andy
Nice one Andy. I am sure you will enjoy it, bowls is a great sport, wether socially or more competitive.
@@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks Alec... I have now Joined my local club and I have been made very welcome by all. Enjoying my new activity. Thanks for replying to my messages. Kind regards. Andy
Thank you for sharing.Appreciate.
Thank you Alec, very helpful 😊
A pleasure. And thanks. 👍
That is great, glad to have helped. I must have a look at that. 👍
Fantastic, im always up for people spreading the bowls message! I was thinking of doing another channel or playlist myself to try and introduce a young spin on things. Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks, Falky, I appreciate your comments.
Hiya Alec..just joined my local bowling club. Never thought of me trying bowls being a female just turned 40 felt being an odd one out. Not a chance 🙃 enjoy every minute of this game. No clue about the game but your videos are great and I’m learning more more every day👌
Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy your new hobby. :)
Thank you so much for that. Our local club in Arnside, Cumbria has an open day tomorrow which I'm keen to attend. At least I now have a basic knowledge of what to expect, not having bowled before. I'll never catch up with your 35 years experience though, as I'm 76 already !
Thanks for the comments. I hope it all goes well. Let me know how you get on. :)
Hi alec my name is John maxted from newzealand I am just starting play bowls and I have downloaded you on utube well done I play with 0
Thanks John. Good luck with the game.
Great informative video, cheers for the content
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comments.
Top bloke. Good video mate.
Thanks 👍
Cheers.
Good Presentation I understood completely
Thanks Brian, glad it helped. 👍
Thanks so much for this video! I am starting to play in Hong Kong.
Thank you Christopher, I am glad you liked it. Good luck with your bowls.
Just taken up the sport. Good fun. Good meditation.
Have fun! That is what it is all about.
Hi Angel, thanks for the question. Go to my video 'Lawn Bowls for Fun 20 - What is expected from a new bowler', I cover that subject there. :)
Thank you very much, I was wondering why many young people don’t play lawn bowl?
I am 43 years old and I start to learn how to play lawn bowl now?
Yes, it is a shame more younger people don't play, but things are changing slowly. In fact the best players in the UK all tend to be younger, but it is still a fact that most are in the 50+ age group. I think the dress code in the UK has not helped, but thankfully clubs are changing to coloured strips now, so that will help. In Australia they are well ahead of us on that front, but we are getting there, slowly but surely. :)
Love the videos, what are the markers you use and where do I buy them. Thank you
I use felt ones, jut cut to size, but I seen cloth, card, plastic etc.
Great to hear from you. Of course, do link the vids on your website, in fact I really appreciate it. Thanks.
@@LawnBowlsforFun Excellent, thank you
Can you please do more of your channel on the disabled and indoor Bowls because I am new to the game as I have watched my family do it for a few years now
Yes, I must do some more. I am glad you reminded me.
I love this game sir
Me too, I never tire of it.
Really enjoyed thank you
Thanks James appreciate the comment.
Thanks for your help 👍
Thanks Alan. 👍
Can we use this for the new members of our lawn bowling club?
Of course, please do. 👍

Thank you very much for your help
You are welcome. Enjoy the games.
I started watching this as interested to start and would you believe it it’s the club I wanna join
Even better Janet. We look forward to seeing you. :)
Hi Alec
It’s sending down the jack I am having the biggest problem with , it always seems to go off one side or the other & sometimes out of bounds , do you think it’s the way I’m holding it ,I’ve not been told to hold it like you do ,I will give that a go today when I go for a session
Iam from Pakistan 🇵🇰 I love this game
It is a great game, played in all parts of the world. I hope you have a green near you so you can play.
Forget lawn bowls, tell me how to get my lawn to look like that!
Haha. I know what you mean. Several thousands of pounds and a lot of work. :)
Thank You Sir.
You are most welcome
The front of the mat must be 2 meters from the ditch? 8:15
Should it not be the back of the mat which should be 2 meters from the ditch?
I want to learn this game
Hopefully there is a green near you to learn. It is a great game. Keep well, and thanks for the contact.
Thanks!
A pleasure. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you!!!

Nice video. I want to get into bowls but I was worried that a bowls club would be a bit cliquey and unfriendly to a man on his own wanting to play but you’ve reassured me it’s a friendly atmosphere.
