It’s a great period war movie. I watched it for the first time as a teenager at a TSS department store on Long Island in the early 1980s. Was absolutely transfixed! Color TV!!! And Tigers!
A hilarious movie. My father (who lived through the German occupation of Belgium in WWII) and I went to see it in the theater in 1970. A favorite of mine, I have watched it many times since.

I love Kelly's Heros. It's one of the few DVDs i own. Despite the fact i can name half a dozen errors with the weapons and gear used. I will admit to not knowing Oddball's Shermans were made post-war. But the story, cast, and other details make it easy to put aside the mistakes and enjoy it.
My favorite (anti)war heist comedy ;) I have a remote controlled model of Oddball's Sherman in 1/16 scale. Of course it has a loudspeaker and plays the melodies from the movie ;)
Awesome movie. Cast, plot and soundtrack are epic. So many quotes, so many great characters. One of my all time favourite movies! It’s part bank job, war, western and comedy movie all rolled into one wonderful counter culture movie full of anti- heroes with a little anti-war sentiment when the guys mention “we’re getting killed now for 50 bucks a month” thrown in. Great job on the video, loved the facts and figures. Keep up the good work chaps. 🫡 Woof woof!
To this day I'm still trying to find the version of the Battle Hymn of The Republic that Oddball played when he's leading the army convoy down the hill
One of my favorite movies! Thanks to The Chieftain, I've fallen for the M4 Medium. And one time a couple of years ago, I noticed that the mantlets on the Shermans used in Kelly's Heros were wrong, which made me research them. Nice video on them, and this movie, too!
My brothers and I (three of us) first saw this movie at the Acapulco Princess Hotel in either December 1972 or February 1974 (I forgot which trip it was). Since then, I have lost count over how many times I've watched it, loving it every time. Meanwhile, something never brought up in any review of the movie is the fact that when we first meet Oddball's Shermans the loudspeaker is mounted on the right side of Oddball's tank's turret, yet later in the movie it is now clearly mounted on the left side of the turret.
@stuartaaron613 Two of the tanks in Oddball's unit have the speakers mounted on the left side. The one with the speaker on the right is the one being worked on when Oddball is showing them to Kelly. Oddball's personal tank is one of the other two.
Personally this is my al time favorite war movie. Great assembly of acting talent, humorous, yet interesting. Love the sound track as well. RIP gentlemen, JWD!
Our guys when they attacked the Arabs in Kuwait, did use loudspeakers, just like in the movie, playing music. This time though, it was the 'Flight of the Valkyries', featured in "Apocalypse Now".
I have read that US crews of M4A3 tanks would remove the rev limiter in theory increasing the speed an acceleration of the tank. I took it that this was what Moriarty had done. That said it would also explain why it broke down😊
This movie is my guilty pleasure . I've watched it more times than any other , by far . First on DVD , then Blu-Ray and again every time my audio gear is upgraded . Single mancave .
Kelly's Heroes is a great movie. It's very much not technically accurate (the best kind of accuracy) but it's gonna ring true as a historical comedy for many guys who were drafted vets in ww2, korea, and vietnam. Contrast with 1999's, Three Kings.
What I appreciate about Kelly's Heroes is (aside from the acting, plot, etc. which is always entertaining) is that they tried to make it look right. Real Shermans (wrong model, OK), good mockup Tigers, uniforms, weapons, etc. So many films paint a swastika on an M48 and go with that.
Well made and casted. Between Southerland and Rickels, and the rest of the cast, it was a great movie and one of the better comedy adventure war movies made. Always watch it when its playing.
One of my favorite movies of all time with its combination of humor, drama, and at least a bit of historical representation. Not to mention that my hometown was also named Claremont!
ok.... there was REEL TO REEL tape in the 1940s. it didnt have to be a record player... and the speaker they are using is from an air raid siren *I ASSURE YOU. ITS LOUD ENOUGH*
@@cmkeelDIM Wire recording fidelity was equal to that of the phonograph (record player), so it still replaces the record player favorably both because it can be used in a vehicle and because it can play for longer stretches of time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_recording even lists a contemporary to the movie use: "In 1944-1945, the 3132 Signal Service Company Special of the U.S. Army's top secret Ghost Army used wire recorders to create sonic deception on the Western Front in the Second World War. Multiple battlefield scenarios were recreated using military sounds recorded at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The wire-recorded audio, which was played back through powerful amplifiers and speakers mounted on vehicles, was used to conceal real Allied deployments, locations and operations."
Rest in Peace Sarge Donald. That said, even as a Militaria collector like me, I can easily overlook any negative details. It was a fantastic movie and will always be a fantastic movie. First time I saw it was about 1972 on TV back when great entertainment was still played on it. One hell of a cast too.
People used to not be as obsessed with accuracy in movies. They knew it was a movie, so required certain levels of "suspension of disbelief" to enjoy them. Stage plays usually required even more of it. Also, until the early 1980's, the American military frowned on Hollywood being accurate in it's depictions of it, even to the extent of discouraging them from having properly set up uniforms w/ all the patches, emblems, brass, & medals being in the correct place. It was supposedly to throw off enemy spies, who might see a movie &:set up a uniform they wear as a disguise, so they give themselves away as frauds. The depictions of equipment, & it's proper use, might give away something akin to "sources & methods". In the mid '80's, the American military began to change their tune, when they realized that these concerns at least as far as movies went, were for the most part just in their imagination, & the propaganda value of accurately depicting uniforms & equipment to a great degree, offset even a few genuine concerns, so they not only encouraged Hollywood to have better accuracy, they lent them a hand in making movies, not only supplying soldiers, sailors, airman, Coast Guardsmen, & Marine extras, but supplying them with tanks, ships, aircraft, etc.
Out with the negative waves, enjoy a cup of coffee. RIP Oddball.

Woof woof!
I'm amazed this didn't get a reboot set in the desert storm era.
To this day I'm still trying to find the version of the Battle Hymn of The Republic that Oddball played when he's leading the army convoy down the hill
That's not an army, that's a circus"
Take it easy Big Joe, some of these people have sensitive feelings!
Thank you for the video, this is the best war movie ever made. The cast is spot on, and the performance is outstanding.
Loved the movie and all the actors in it,👍🌟🌟🤩🤩 jf.
One of my most favorite movies of all time.
A awesome movie I wish they can make more movies like that again
I always loved it especially because of the great actors and having humor and action together!
This movie was probably the most responsible for my enlisting in armor, woof woof, baby!
One of my favorite movies! Thanks to The Chieftain, I've fallen for the M4 Medium. And one time a couple of years ago, I noticed that the mantlets on the Shermans used in Kelly's Heros were wrong, which made me research them. Nice video on them, and this movie, too!
Loved the movie when i first saw it as a kid, still love it now.
@stuartaaron613
Two of the tanks in Oddball's unit have the speakers mounted on the left side. The one with the speaker on the right is the one being worked on when Oddball is showing them to Kelly. Oddball's personal tank is one of the other two.
Absolutely love this movie watching it on TBS as a kid
Personally this is my al time favorite war movie. Great assembly of acting talent, humorous, yet interesting. Love the sound track as well. RIP gentlemen, JWD!
Thanks for the TANKS!! 💯
A great movie. In a very similar vein to The Italian Job. Both can be called a caper
One of my favourite films !!!!
Rip Donald Sutherland this is a great movie I like to watch it at least once a year
I saw this movie a long time ago. Tanks for the memories.
Our guys when they attacked the Arabs in Kuwait, did use loudspeakers, just like in the movie, playing music. This time though, it was the 'Flight of the Valkyries', featured in "Apocalypse Now".
Everything about Kelly's Heroes makes me weep for real in 2024.
WTF then throw your phone away and your computer and sit in the past.
I have read that US crews of M4A3 tanks would remove the rev limiter in theory increasing the speed an acceleration of the tank. I took it that this was what Moriarty had done. That said it would also explain why it broke down😊
Love this movie.
This movie is my guilty pleasure . I've watched it more times than any other , by far . First on DVD , then Blu-Ray and again every time my audio gear is upgraded . Single mancave .
That movie, from the open to close was absolutely amazing. A freakin masterpiece, and the tanks just made it so cool.
Kelly's Heroes is a great movie. It's very much not technically accurate (the best kind of accuracy) but it's gonna ring true as a historical comedy for many guys who were drafted vets in ww2, korea, and vietnam. Contrast with 1999's, Three Kings.
They use correct equipment, uniforms and fire commands. It is more accurate than any tank movie to date
One of my all-time favorites.
God Bless Donald Sutherland a great man and actor..Woof..Woof.!.
Watched this movie with my dad in the mid 70’s. Watched it with my son in the mid 2000’s. Great movie.
Man what a movie. Laughs, surprises, action and the tanks,,,, oh yeaaaa. Set the sound Odd Ball.
One of my favorite movies of all time 😊
Lovely video. Great film and a great film score. All those burning briges.
Always Loved this movie , thanks
ok....
there was REEL TO REEL tape in the 1940s.
it didnt have to be a record player...
and the speaker they are using is from an air raid siren
*I ASSURE YOU. ITS LOUD ENOUGH*
It would have possibly been the reel to reel's cousin, the wire recorder. Same idea as rrtor but used a wire.
Mag tape was just in its infancy then. As turkey said the wire recorder was available, but really didnt have that level of fidelity.
E 4 mafia bogarted a Nazi wire recorder
@@cmkeelDIM Wire recording fidelity was equal to that of the phonograph (record player), so it still replaces the record player favorably both because it can be used in a vehicle and because it can play for longer stretches of time.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_recording even lists a contemporary to the movie use:
"In 1944-1945, the 3132 Signal Service Company Special of the U.S.
Very informative insight to one of my favorite movies. Salute Donald, may your family hope for you in the next life :)
Kelley's Heros was the favorite among the Volunteers who worked a the former Patton Museum of Armour and Cavalry.
1988 and 1994 volunteer here. Charles Lemons was too cool
I love the movie, I know what I'm watching this weekend for my popcorn and a movie night.
Thanks for the terrific video.
This is one of my favorite movies.
My favourite war movie! Loved this video on the tanks in the movie
Epic film. Good analysis, of the Sherman's used.
Never underestimate the engineering capabilities of a US Military person with shell shock and a severe case of IDGAFA.
Every war movie makes mistakes, I'm willing to forgive Kelly's Heroes. Love this Film!
