I had chronic tonsillitis from age 6 and finally got a tonsillectomy at 17. I spent the better part of every week standing and removing tonsil stones with a Q-tip or a tweezer. It was excruciating and having that tonsillectomy was the best medical procedure I have ever gone through.

@@Bird1964The smaller ones don't hurt, the smell is absolutely horrid though. Like hot trash times a thousand and no matter how much you brush or chew gum you don't wanna be talking close to anyone. I don't know why I had them but luckily it only lasted about a year. If you cough you can taste them, sometimes one would fly loose if you clear your throat. When I first found one I had no idea what a tonsil stone even was, I thought I had some kind of parasite.

The thing about them is they're kind of tucked up into those pockets. And unless they're super noticeably out in the open. They don't pose a real huge problem because by that time anything that is visible. Outside of the skin flap has a sort of coding. Or hardness, that keeps some of that smell in now. If you pick at them, then yeah, they're gonna stink. But they are not painful. They're just a nuisance.

I’m so glad I got my tonsils taken out in college. I had dealt with stones my whole life and was so used to them.

I finally had my tonsils out when I was 27. I was so sick and tired of constantly battling with horrible bouts of Tonsillitis and would also end up with Strep Throat every spring and fall (dont ask me how that happened). I had a terrible time with tonsil stones, but they were never painful, just annoying.
One day I felt a particularly large one and when I opened my mouth, it popped out, but it was bright green! I was so disgusted! That had never happened before and that was the final straw for me. I called up my doc and demanded to have them yanked out. While I was waiting for the surgery, every single tonsil stone was bright green, so obviously it was time. My doctor said that he had never seen anything like it, and he made sure to book the earliest surgery date possible.
Having my tonsils removed is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm 49 now, and I think I've had a sore throat maybe five times since my tonsils were removed. It's been a huge blessing.

I don’t know where you are but in America the ENT doctor (aka Ear Nose Throat Doctor) has specialized tools and cameras for the exact reason of removing tonsil stones. If you regularly get them and tonsillitis or other medical conditions they may suggest you have a tonsillectomy or your tonsils removed

@@Bird1964 it definitely does suck (being somebody who has some, luckily mine aren't that horrible). Fortunately you can help reduce them by smoking less (if you're a smoker at all) and eating the right things, while brushing and making sure to check.
