Great review. Thanks for convincing me to buy one.
You're welcome!
Enjoyed your video. I purchased a pre-owned 2014 i3 REX Mega version with 25K miles for $19,000.00. The pre-owned market is awesome on the i3. Charge it for free using my solar panels at home and free charging stations at work. Quality transportation on the cheap indeed! Al the best!
Same here, I went green on everything as well.
Great man! The fact that you can charge it at home with solar panels and work is a perfect scenario. I'm thinking about owning one in a couple of months, will you please share you're experience with it so far? DO you have any issues, do you have a warranty and how many miles?
hey im in the process of buying a 14 i3 and I have solar panels on my garage what is your setup number of panels and watts and are you using a standard power inverter?
Yep, used EVs in general are a must to look at for people who are thinking of electric but can't afford a new one. Not including Teslas, which keep their values quite well, they range in price from around $4000-ish for a Smart ForTwo electric to $15000-$25000 for a BMW i3. The average for non-Tesla used EVs seems to be about $12000-$15000. TONS of Nissan Leafs to be had, as well as VW eGolfs too.
My girlfriend has an i3. I didn’t understand why she liked it so much, she had a Chevy spark before, these small electric cars. Now that she moved in and I drive/ride in it more, I totally get it. She is a doctor, and has options when it came to vehicles. But she wanted this tiny electric car. I tried to talk her into something bigger and sportier(actually just cooler) to no avail. I own a Z06 and a Jaguar xjl supercharged. I like big supercharged/turbo V8s. Cars with presence. But every time we go into the city we take her car. It’s zippy, suuuuper easy to park, doesn’t draw unwanted attention, and it’s all electric! I like to take just to run to the store down the street. Even though I’m a millennial like her, I didn’t get the bug. But all of her friends and colleagues drive small cars like that. I won’t ever buy one for myself, but I appreciate them a lot more than I did
Alan Norris i drive a M3 f80, a i3s will be my next.
Why?
Driving costs compared to the M3, less than a floating turd!
Why do you need 500hp to go 70mph on the highway?
Why do you want to waste hundreds or thousands of bucks for fuel and maintenance when you can do your runs with quarters?
Are you confident enough, so you don't have to drive an expensive and powerfull car to prove that you are a tough man?
Your girlfriend doesn't give a $..t about others, deep in your head you feel that you have to prove something, so you have to drive an expensive and "good" looking car to show everybody who you are.
@@chrishar110 I knew guys like him, they have to have the biggest gas gazler on the road, but when gas price goes up, they out whining about it!
LOL!
Great job on this video. Camera was perfect. And you are exceptionally easy to watch and listen to. You certainly spent a fair amount of time selecting what you wanted to get across in this. I never felt like I was holding my breath while the video was stumbling or flailing for a point.
you absolutely just helped me confirm my purchase... thank you so much ✨
You’re welcome 👍
You actually do get a 2 1/2 gallon tank. The I3 is coded to say empty at 1.9 gallons. You can pay $150 to get it reprogrammed to read the full 2.5 gallons.
Can you advise me where I can do that? My dealer won't do it. Thanks.
Bob Croxton Use the BimmerCode app (Android and Apple) and buy on amazon an OBD reader (take the ones that bimmercode references on their website). I just bought the Veepak BLE OBD2 for example a couple days ago and successfully could get back to the full gas tank, activate more screens, activate the comfort access with folding mirrors, deactivate the warning on the nav... Total cost is 32$ OBD reader + ~20$ app .... no need for 150$ anywhere ! And you get to change other stuff later or at the same time
Thibault Koempgen yea, I did this. Bought BimmerCode full version for $31, now I’m coding like crazy lol also bumped my tank capacity to 2.4 gallons.
Does changing the coding to read the full 2.5 gallons kill the BMW warranty?
Does changing the code to get more gas capacity in tank cancel any warranty from BMW? What year of i3 did you buy?
It's the same tank, go get the coding changed for Hold Mode and access to the entire gas tank
The US car is software limited to 1.4 gal. tank. Both US and Europe have the same size tank.
@@alrysin3154 Almost true. Both the European and US cars have the same physical 2.4 gallon fuel tank, but the US version is limited to 1.9 gallons by software. This was done mainly for regulatory reasons when the car was brought into California, thus the rest of the US. In order to meet the criteria of an extended range BEV (not a hybrid) the fuel range could not exceed the battery range. So the fuel range was limited by software to cut the fuel pump after 1.9 gallons. This allowed the car to use the HOV lanes on our freeway system. This could be coded to obtain the full 2.4 gallons in the US cars, but with the small possibility of voiding the factory warranty. If the car is out of factory warranty and no extended warranty, it is worth it to code this as well as "hold state of charge" to have the car perform like it was designed to do. The extra mileage is useful in the model i3 because of its small battery size. Of course this pertains only to the REx models only.
I own a i3. Every review forget to mention the turning radius. Its amazing. Makes it much easier for you to park.
very, very true!!
Love your review! Very thorough and informative. I saw this car on my favorite dealership website and was like “whoa, that’s a nice car!” Thanks for sharing your review.
Ive been looking at the I3 as my next purchase and you have helped loads!! time for a test drive thanks!
I own an i3--as of 1 month. A few of your statements need expanding on:
range anxiety: My wife and I just drove to Stonewall Resort in West Virginia, 134 miles from our house. We could have made it on just electric plus the range extender, but stopped in Morgantown to partially recharge while having lunch. Once we got to Stonewall, the nice people there let us recharge overnight. The range extender is awesome--maintaining 70 mph with it running and climbing hills on I-79 in West Virginia was no problem.
you must use fossil fuels to recharge: The charging station we took advantage of in Morgantown is powered by an array of solar panels. No fossil fuels involved. Even when charging using power generated by coal, the car gets the equivalent of 117 mpg--so your carbon footprint is vastly smaller than it would be with even the most efficient gasoline engine.
The car is also a gas (no pun intended) to drive! Zero to 40 is faster than any other BMW. Handling is tight, because it's so narrow it almost feels like you're riding a motorcycle down narrow streets. Seating position gives excellent visibility and, aside from the A pillar as you mentioned, there are no blind spots.
It's the ideal city car but also perfectly suited to short trips from home and back. This will be my regular driver from now on.
Hey love your review thanks. I’m considering getting one should I got the Rex ? Also what’s the differences between them?
Awesome video … very helpful info for a prospective new owner.
City/Suburban .. here in PHX it works great for us with 80-90 mile range, solar energy, great roads, minimal state registration for the BEV version, and many convenient DC charging when away from home. Just got our second 2014 BEV i3 BMW CPO at a $15k saving ..now that is an incredible buy. You have basic Mega model but going up to Giga or Tera World models gets the luxury treatment. Excellent review, and after putting 15k miles of fun driving in our first BEV i3 I can only affirm all your observations.
The reason for the difference in the capacity of the gas tank is because in the US, per CARB/DOT regulations, for a car that has a gas engine to be considered a full EV, the range on battery power alone has to always be higher than the range while the engine is running. If the i3s in the US had the full 2.4 gallon tank, the range on engine power could exceed battery only power, and the i3 Rex would no longer be classified as a full EV. Fun fact: the physical gas tanks in the i3 REx in the US and in Europe is the same thing. They're all 2.4-gallon tanks, but the cars in the US are programmed to only use 1.9 gallons. So when the car says you're out of gas, there's 0.5 gallons sitting in there. Thanks CARB...it has nothing to do with any decisions BMW made.
Good video but it was a diferent for me,you just took me around Pittsburgh i use to live beforefor 5 years.Thank you:)
I was listening you, and a same time looking in the window:)
I really like the car. I'd almost never need to travel long distances, and the interior looks spacious. I'm also a fan of the styling - it's practical, and I think it's quirky in a way that's meant to last. I really enjoyed the review too; a bit repetitive at times (though almost all are) but it was chill and not whiny like a lot of electric car reviews.
It really is all a part of the charm of the car.
Great review. I seriously enjoyed watching your review than most other reviews about this car around RUclips. I hope you keep making videos like this and keep us posted about the i3 and any other car you can get your hands on
Thanks Man. Lots of other reviews to come. Thanks for the feedback too. Very much appreciate it.
You don't need fossil fuels to generate electricity; Germany is committed to renewables. Taken that the range extender does of course, but consider it a life belt - only for emergencies.
+daseteam
"You don't need fossil fuels to generate electricity"
Exactly, but what many don't know is that you need electricity to create gasoline - lots of electricity.
+ekhaat Exactly; I rest my case.
It is possible to generate electricity without fossil fuels. But most of us buy from an energy company. I buy mine from a 'Eco' company who's major claim is that electricity they supply is generated (100%) by renewables. However and it is a BIG however. The Terms & Conditions state 'due to circumstances beyond our control, or technical problems, supplied electricity may be produced by non renewables. If this happens, we will inform you of it via you preferred communication method'.
They go on to say, I will not pay for any electricity that has not been 100% renewable.
All EV's use considerable fossil fuels during manufacturer - it might be the truck that delivers the vehicle to your property or showroom, but they are still not totally (close) carbon zero.
***** "All EV's use considerable fossil fuels during manufacturer..."
No different than ICE cars then - except that for the amount of energy that is needed to make and deliver 1 liter of gasoline, a Tesla will run about 7 km. And the electricity used for refining the oil is no cleaner that the electricity used by EV's.
I think you are talking about the US, not Europe.
i am a brazilian guy and i loved to have this one, i think that all world is going to that side for the eletric cars, not only to be more green, but also to spent less with fuel, for save money.
amazing video and you told me everything that i wanted to know. thanks
I like your review of this product the best. Keep up your great videos!
Thank you for providing us with this lovely educated/knowledgeable review.
You're welcome.
Great review! I own i3 and i8 and both are the best cars I ever had (I had 5 series and X5 before). i3 is just perfect for the city, i8 for the long distance a dream to drive. Two milestones of intelligent car engineering!
The tank is still 2.5 it's just limited in the programing so you can get it reprogramed so that you get that extra mileage.
Thanks for your input. I enjoyed your review. test driving one today.
Great one Doc! I really love your style of car reviewing.
Several years later I had to get one. So far I’m loving it regardless of not being able to change it in the apartment complex. Small battery and fast chargers can be made to work in SoCal.👍
Great to hear!
Just found your i3 review video! I am about to test drive one, and VERY much considering getting one.
Thanks. It really is a pretty good car with great visibility, easy mobility and all.
Best review I've seen so far.. Good work!
Thanks.
Very helpful video.
Thanks so much!
I really like you man. Been subscribed for a while and it still boggles my mind how you have a SUPER welcoming personality and own crazy cars like the Aventador/Huracan. Usually people act differently (in a worse way) when they get to your level. I couldn't imagine seeing you driving the i3 and thinking "maybe that guy owns an Aventador as well" 😂
+Po Russki Thanks man. What you see is the genuine me and I don't intend to ever change. You can see I love all kinds of cars--thats just me.
Great review! The Chevy Volt started a revolution. Glad to see other manufacturers are doing the same now. I wish there are even more cars with this set up, especially larger trucks.
+bluesky I think those are coming esp. since they are a huge offender in smog and air quality deterioration in cities.
DoctaM3 I'm sure they will come as well. I was happy to see VIA Motors. They are this awesome company that turns large GM trucks and vans into electric with range extenders. I'm a big fan of electric, if for the performance alone, with immediate torque at 0 rpm... amazing feeling.
Great insights, I'm looking forward to their updated '17 model. Sunroof and larger battery are compelling reasons to further my consideration of the i3.
+hellodlo I totally agree. I am hoping that @BMWi gets back to me to get an early review of the upgraded system.
I've now had an i3 (without range extension) for 5 months and it is a fantastic car. We also have a BMW X5 and a Porsche Boxster S 981 and the i3 is now used for around 80-90% of our driving. Drives really well, we can fit two teenagers and two small dogs into it and it accelerates to 30mph faster than a BMW M4... 👍
The woodgrain option def would have classed up the interior a bit!
The reason you get the smaller gas tank is not because of BMW, but because of US government regulations. Its just a software limitation that can be coded away.
I think both tanks are the same 2.5 gallon size. Like you said, it's just software that makes the difference for the US version
Those regs are state based like CA requirement. Larger tanks are now available with the 2017 33kW battery.
BMW was going to lose $15,000 a car in government credits because it was not all electric and was now a hybrid. BMW chose money over the safety of the buyers . Google the I3 BMW lawsuit. This car has so many issues
I have one for about three weeks and it's fantastic !! Before i drove a BMW X5 6 cilinder and it's another way of driving but i don't regret
Excellent review. I note that you're in Pittsburgh. I wonder how it does in the snow.
Steve Weiskopf thanks. There is a video on my channel of the i3 in the snow.
amazing quality , was really surprised , subbed
+iliovecaRS Thanks. I really appreciate it!
Thanks for a tour of the i3 and the BURGH!
We had one for one year, its been a great car and BMW is right on. You did a great review. Thank you
Yeah I just bought a used 2017. Love it already!
VG review. Yes, on regenerative braking, it comes as a shock if you are used to an automatic transmission. The smart thing is, if you think about any given drive you do, you end up at the same place you started, eventually. That means the uphills and climbing effort, is almost exactly equal to the energy you get back when rolling down hills. There is some efficiency and wastage to consider, so it still uses energy. Brakes last forever, because you use them a lot less, and no heat on the brakes means less waste. One more efficiency aspect - because you get 'dragged' by the vacuum behind other vehicles, and do low speed, electric really works in cities. Lastly, my brother advises me they are researching SOLAR PAINT. A multi-layer coating, or maybe plastic film, that would convert solar energy to electrical energy, obviously working at multiple angles. That would help our range anxiety?
BMW USA lets you take them on extended test drives for a few days, all you have to do is sign up. I have to do that soon
I have an i3REX and 30% of my journeys are way outside the pure battery range so I utilise the extender and accept it is definitely NOT the most efficient. However 70% of my trips are pure electric.I never ever have any range issues and the best thing is that this car is such fun to drive.I have owned most of the BMW range during my 45 years on the road and this little beauty meets all my current needs and it can only get better!
Thank you for sharing your review. Very nicely done! I am at the beginning stages of exploring what this car offers. One thing that is not clear to me, if you kept adding gas into the 1.9 gallon tank does that mean you could have an unlimited range assuming you couldn't stop and charge the battery?
Yes
Glad to see you get what the i3 is all about, few do!
I picked up the ‘19 120 Rex because I needed a car now and the i4 and iX had a few month wait on them. Planning to order the i4 when I bought it I decided to just drive it a few years. While it’s never going to replace the luxury of my past cars (528, X5 and x6) it’s very peppy and you feel the road the same in all of them (which is why I drive a BMW to begin with). I’m three months in and pretty darn happy. In a few years the tech will upgrade again so it will be really new. This car was ahead of it’s time in my opinion. Great to drive.
Awesome. I did and still love the i3. Honestly, it is a great city car.
Good review, nice mix of facts and opinion! Looking at EV's for my 60 mile L.A. commute to access the HOV lane. Btw, I curl my cap brims the same way; didn't think anyone did that anymore, flat brim is today's look... let's bring that back!
Steve Bopp yea. This would be a great car for your commute. And yes, let's bring the #curlbrimback 😝
If you have a Rex 60Ah battery version, you can now upgrade to 120Ah (40kw). Unfortunately only in Europe to my knowledge (via Havrla). Did it on mine, so happy..
it is the transport system in transition..it looks nice and that hook up look is very nice man...only issue is the RWD issue...I had a bimmer RWD before almost died in a bad accident with that car so RWD needs to be improved for FWD or optional part time AWD system...good review man!
You shot it in Pittsburgh! I just saw you gave a view of Mount Washington!
I've not seen a reply to your plea for a larger gas-tank - I believe this is because of the California regs for the market segment BMW were selling to - IIRC the regs said that it shouldn't be able to do more then x miles on REx, plus the REx could only be engaged after the batteries got to a certain level of discharge, i.e. there's no "Hold Electric Until Later" on the i3 which I think is an option in Europe.
Theres one that lives about 2 min from me, I've grown to like it...
Really great car! I tested it today and I really love it! BMW thanks for such products!
Its Cool. But I wold never have traded a i8 for it.
Very entertaining review. Rondelle? Kidney grill? You learn something new as well :)
Cool video man.... a really neat concept for an EV. I I think it’s misunderstood as being part of the BMW line. - thanks DoctaM3 👍😎
Range extender pollutes using the small 600cc engine. Charging doesn't necessarily use fossil fuels. It can be done using solar panels or a wind turbine.. if you have those things.
Just got to drive a friend's She bought it used, a 2014. It drove like a brand new car. I was really impressed.
I think it would be a beautiful thing if ALL cars had an electric mode i.e. (hybrid) and in the city you rode around in electric and when you hit the highway switch it back to AUTO and let the car decide when to use the gas engine. But wow...how amazing it would be if most cities were quieter and people could hear themselves talking.
People talk too much...especially Women, and say nothing. Goodbye Hillary!!!
It's not a different tank, it's software controlled to use less of the tank capacity on US models. This can be tweeked in a software upgrade.
Excelent review! I am convinced about electric eco cars made of reusable plastic. BTW, did you ever heard about total configurable cars?
I heard very little. What have you heard.
You do get that 2.4 gallon tank, software only lets you see 1.8. People out there can change firmware back to European mode
I have had my “Litl’ Blue” 2017 BMW i3 BEV 33Kw 94Ah since 01/25/2021. I bought it in showroom condition from an original owner with 24k on the odometer. I’m 75, drive it about 30-100 miles a month mostly to pick up online ordered groceries and to visit the VA clinic. I use a 240V, 16A (3.84Kw) Level 2 charger in my carport routed inside as an alternate to my dryer outlet. I get 13.5 miles per hour of charging, and at home my FPL electric cost is $0.031 per Mile. If there is a more perfect EV out there, I simply don’t want it. I don’t need more range, acceleration, styling, features, reliability, comfort, handling, or value. Litl’ Blue is obviously my Forever Car. Paid $16,500 but was offered $24,000 by Edmunds 3 months ago which tickled my worn out ego.🚙
Honestly, you nailed it on the head. This is doing exactly what it as designed to do. I wonderful city car! Congrats!!!
@@DoctaM3 I'm glad to hear that you still see the practicality of the i3 for many of us"city drivers" as it has remained since your great review 6 yrs ago. And I still understate its perfection and technical features. Thanks for responding.
I like the Tech Deck half pipe dash. Great review Cody!
+Blake's Garage thanks man. appreciate the feedback.
This was a great video. The only question that I have is how do you start the car? Is it a push start?
Hyundai makes an Electric Car and is already sold in the UK, called the IONIQ, it has BOTH charge ports so you could also use a Quick Charge Tesla charger.
nice review and like the shade of that color as well. The gas reservoir capacity of the US Spec
model is perplexing, was BMW afraid of selling to many i3 REx models?
They did that because if the fuel was greater than electric, they could not quality for some incentives in the US so they electronically limited the fuel capacity. The actual tank is the same size as Europe and elsewhere.
I enjoyed and appreciate listening!
waiting on my 2018 rex! like the review ! thanks
Good choice! Glad you found the review helpful.
I’m on the market for one I absolutely love it and yes lowered and aftermarket wheels to go to the shows
Awesome--production will end 2022
@4:22, when he is talking about the REX gas tank size. The car can be reprogrammed to accept the larger fuel size, it is only electronically limited in the US.
Also, you can reprogram the REX to engage at any time below 75% battery like they have in Europe, essentially turning the i3 into a petrol car if you want for longer drives.
+TheVogonity yes. I spoke about that. The physical tank is the same but electronically limited in US so the range was not more on gasoline versus electric since it would not qualify for some gov't incentives. Without REX, you no doubt have range anxiety if you go any decent distance.
Great review thanks for posting
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
7:30 Not rolling resistance, its for aero drag.
Contact patch dont add rolling resistance, but its normal contact patch because bigger diameter add contat patch too.
I can explain the tank thing.
You get different subsidies/discounts for full EVs than you do for hybrids in the US. For the i3 REX to be classified as an EV rather than a PHEV, its EPA-rated range needs to be higher on electric than it is on gas.
At 1.9gal, the gas range is slightly lower than the electric range. At 2.5gal, it is higher.
So they basically make it to German standards, then for the US models they have it stop the gas line at 1.9 gal, AND forced it to use at much EV range as possible before doing so.
I wouldn't be surprised if the hack to fix this was released by BMW themselves.
I already did-- but great to have folks reminded. There are difference between incentive in US vs. Europe.
@@DoctaM3 Guess I need to pay better attention! Glad you got it in there.
This was an excellent video. I am looking at one for my college age daughter.
Thanks for the review. I’m looking at used i3’s now.
You won't be disappointed. I would so go REX if possible.
Very thorough review, thank you sir :)
Thanks 🙏
You can have the gas tank coded to euro spec and get that extra space back pretty easy fix. Well said about having to know the purpose of the car some people don't understand that then start bashing it.
Cool Vid man. Cheers from Poland!
Thanks. Glad you liked the video.
Great review. Buying one this week. Could not take eyes off the hat.
Thanks 🙌🏼🙌🏼
If you are interested in getting one of these but can't afford new, have a look at the previously owned market for these (and other EVs as well). Used ones in great condition and low miles are between $15000 and about $25000. By all accounts and reviews they are great, fun cars to have, though I would say if you're going to go this route look for ones after 2014 and WITHOUT the range extender as that seems to be where any issues lie.
Thank you for all details from a fresh owner...
Great review! Good job, guy!
Thanks.
super helpful, thanks for this
it's not there as of yet, but I can see this becoming very popular with a higher capacity battery in the future. But to be honest with the Model 3 on it's way, they would have to add some unique features to give customers a reason to buy it for other reasons besides the elegance of the bmw brand as a company.
It's there. It's not trying to be what you mention.
Really is a great city car. What kind of electric port do you need in your garage though?
Loved this review 🙂
One of the clinicians at the hospital i round at just purchased an I3 for his wife. He took me for a ride in the car. Until I sat in the I3 I was hesitant but after a go around on both highways and neighborhood roads my perception of electric cars has completely changed. As you said Docta, if one knows the purpose of this car, they will appreciate it. Alot of folks are afraid of the electric car, I now embrace it. If you were to ask the average joe that drives a run-of-the-mill 4 cylinder petrol commuter car if their car was electric, i doubt that they would have any qualms about it simply because their car serves the purpose of getting from point A to B. Said person would actually accept it due to money saving. Commuter cars are not race cars they are simply for travel purposes. Once people realize that these cars are simply for the average commuter, I think that they will grow to accept them more. And for those who think that this car will ruin performance based vehicles, as you said, look at the P1, 918 and la ferrari! Those cars are testament that electrification of vehicles can add to the quality of the automobile world
Cheers!

P.S. done with second year of pharmacy school! Onto the third! Thank you for the motivation of the years
I love it! I’m always driving my BMW i3
Nice
Great, honest and straight forward video. Loved the Lexus lady intervention 😝 😉
haha. thanks.
What's the name of the color of this i3? Currently shopping and this color looks clean.
IDK if you know is already but the 0.9 gallon limitation is only software based. You can reprogram the car to take advantage of the full tank.
I know. spoke about it in the video and in the comments too.
The gasoline tank issue is because of governmental regulation, and not BMW. The physical tanks are the same, but the digital coding in the computer is what regulates it. There is an app and module that will let you change the fuel tank restriction.
Correct--I discussed in the comments and description as well.
Excellent review, very entertaining thanks.
GREAT review.
Thank you.
+Terry Vincent thanks 🙏
I am seriously thinking of a EV vehicle of similar type for my courier business that focuses upon time critical delivery. I live in a large small city subject to traffic jams on a regular basis. I am interested in your opinion on the BMWi3 for what I want to use it for. Cheers
Do you think the i3 will be irrelevant when the model 3 comes out?
Hi can you help me understand the range of this car, so does it provide 80mi on battery and 80mi on fuel for a total of 160mi ? or is it combined fuel/battery is 80mi in total ? thanks
combine is about 160 mi
Another review said he felt the range extender made the car off balance and heavier. He also said the steering wheel feels a little loose and choppy when going faster.
