    I have always associated NAS as these huge cumbersome deals. This thing is actually "Cute"! Honestly, I never really payed attention to how they work.. so this was much appreciated information. Thanks so much my friend. Always solid content.. Retro, or not! 👍👍👍

    The DS220uj is an awesome tool. I bought one already populated with 2 x 1TB drives which I quickly found was beginning to run short of space as I found the whole thing extremely useful. Just a few days ago, I upgraded to the 2 x 1TB drives in the SHR drive pool to 2 x 4TB Synology branded drives and was amazed at just how easy it was to perform the upgrade - the whole system was done and dusted within a couple of hours and whilst the new drives were "repairing" the system was still available to use - very impressive. The DSM automatically recognised that a drive had been replaced and provided the instructions on screen to follow to perform the upgrade. Whilst not "hot swappable" this was no big deal and quite intuitive.
    A great recommendation for any one considering their first foray in to the world of NAS 👍

      I 100% agree! While I have yet to have to upgrade as I went quite large at the beginning, everything I have read stated that it will be what you have experienced! Thanks for sharing and for watching!

    I'm using a super-overkill old workstation PC for my NAS needs, it's got two 10-core/20-thread Xeon CPUs and 128GB of RAM so I'm justifying the power consumption by running several other services... My favorite is a PXE Boot server that hosts all my OS install ISOs so I can just boot PCs off the network to install Windows or Linux....

    I have the exact same model of NAS with 2x12TB Seagate Ironwolf drives in it. I've had it for about three years, and has been working well for me. My only complaint about it is that you have to take the whole thing apart to install or replace drives...but in the grand scheme of things, I suppose this isn't a big issue since (hopefully) you'd only need to do so once every few years at most.

      @@TheRetroRecall I'm running it in RAID1. Honestly just using it for mass storage purposes, haven't had yet to use any of the extra features. I MIGHT in the future also set it up as a security camera DVR (not yet researched that, but have heard it can do this), but that'll wait until my current camera system conks out.

    Is there a place to have. a full step by step (setup and usage) for dummy?

      Unfortunately there are quite a bit of factors that can contribute to these symptoms.. It would be difficult for me to assist... However a complete rest of your settings, new drives and a file transfer from your old drives (visa usb adapter) to new would give you a fresh start. Then I would focus on your network after you've completed a full reset. Their website is extremely helpful in my opinion and can help with a lot of issues. I hope that you are able to get this resolved.

    Greetings. I still own an older smartphone with a Micro SD card since most companies got rid of that feature, and most smartphones with more than 128gb of internal storage cost $1,000+ USD. Since my data has amounted to almost 300gb of family photos and videos over the years, an 128gb/256gb smartphone is out of the question, so cloud storage seems to be my only option at this point. Would this be a good alternative? I don't really care so much about Apple iCloud, Samsung Cloud, or Google Photos backup features; automatically saving videos and photos to the cloud. I'm looking for more of a google drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive "in manual mode" feature that allows me to access all my photos and videos over my smartphone through the Cloud, as well as copy photos and videos to it when I want to; manually. I don't like the whole automatic backup and restore/replacement of files. Great video btw.

      Thank you! I would say it all depends on your level of comfort (and your pocketbook ;) In my case with what I am doing - I have a ton of data that I want to ensure is stored in some sort of resilient manner. I researched the cloud option and it was becoming too expensive for me to do it feasibly / comparatively to that of the NAS that I setup in this Video. For 300gb, that was easy for me as my MS Office 365 subscription comes with 1TB of Cloud storage (One Drive). So for your scenario that may be an option. I have several Terabytes of data I need stored so my situation is different. I am comfortable with what I did, however I will be upgrading in the next year to a 4 bay or 8 bay NAS with the option to continue to populate drives and add SSD storage. This will allow me to expand, while adding a layer of security to the data. NOTE - This is NOT a backup / RAID is NOT a backup - just a more robust data storage method. If you want to backup, it should be stored in multiple locations / mirrored at the same time. I hope I was SOME sort of help for you. Thanks for watching ;)

      @@TheRetroRecall Yes, I have two 1TB external hard drives with my family photos and videos backed up to each; lost 1TB or files before so I won't make that same mistake again. My goal is to carry 300gb of storage in a newer more modern 128gb storage smartphone. Since I don't pay for any subscription based software, $100 USD a year for only cloud storage (Google One, OneDrive, etc.) seems a little expensive, and considering I'll have to deal with this issue for the rest of my life; wanting to carry more data than what my smartphone is capable of holding physically, I though this would be the way and save money in the long run. So basically this was my intention: save to 1TB hard drives, save to NAS, delete from smartphone, carry 300gb over the cloud with me anywhere, perhaps transfer files from NAS to phone/phone to NAS, etc. And yes, that was very helpful. Thank you.

    This is brilliant. Many channel creators apparently make videos and upload them, and that's it. They don't keep a copy. And then something happens and the channel gets taken down and suddenly they lose the only copy they had; the one RUclips was using. That's idiotic, pardon my bluntness. If you are making videos, you need to keep your material, the edit or cut list, and the edited final version. Exactly what you are doing. They say of course you need the original files and TWO copies stored in different places, to truly have a backup. But this is a great answer. Congrats!

    I have a question and no one ever answers it or addresses it. I have the same unit and two 4 TB drive, and one just failed.... I want to know whether I can put in a new 6 terabyte drive, I know I may even lose two terabytes of space, but I want to spend a little bit money now to upgrade one so that I only have to upgrade one later when I run out of space or the other dies if that makes sense. So will this thing run with one 4 terabyte and one 6tb drive?

    • @TheRetroRecall
      @TheRetroRecall  8 месяцев назад

      To be honest, where you are dealing with data, I'm not entirely 100% sure. It depends on a lot of factors. If you have this exact one, did you set it up using the Synology RAID format? If so, you should be able to pop in the 6tb drive and the software should rebuild it to the 4TB and you losing the 2Tb. Now that said, I would go on the Synology website and read up on this specific use case to be 100% sure.

  • @RedRuffinsore

    I have an almost identical setup. A Synology 220+ NAS and 2 x 20TB WD Red Plus drives. I started out with 2 x 8TB WD Red Plus drives, and expanded about 18 months later. It has worked perfectly. My drives are hot swappable and just slide in and out without disassembling

    When more storage is needed, more storage is needed.
    Something i do want to recommend highly against is RAID5 with multi terrabyte HDD's. The change of hitting a bad/flakey sector is too large during a rebuild. I draw the line at 2TB per disk.
    The use of SHR is perfectly fine for this use case. But i must note that SHR is a proprietary and Synology specific technology. The regular RAID is standard linux MD RAID.
    backup's backup's backup's! RAID not a backup!
    I myself use Truenas for my own storage needs though i must say the DSM interface is very neat and Synology provides a lot of features in a very polished package.

    • @TheRetroRecall
      @TheRetroRecall  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks and agreed backups are key, I do have automated backups as well. Very good call out on SHR. I do plan on sticking with Synology for the time being allowing the ability to scale. That said, I will have to look at their migration tools allowing the ability to switch to a standard vs SHR if a choice is ever made to go with a different manufacturer.
