    The headband is basically a "slave collar". It is used by both Heavens (Taoism and Buddhism) to control Wukong.

    • @JS-ih7lu
      @JS-ih7lu 4 месяца назад

      The headband is only used by Buddhist deities, not Daoist ones. The Daoists straight up tried to kill Wukong by cooking him in an elixir oven, but failed (only gave him eye irritations). So they called on their Buddhist frenemies to deal with their pesky monkey problem. The Buddha trapped Wukong under a mountain for 500 years, then when he was let out of his life sentence on parol, they tricked him into wearing the headband so they could continue to control him. Only the Buddhists pretend to be merciful by favoring imprisonment/enslavement over capital punishment, the Daoists have no problems with corporeal and capital punishment.

      In the novel, it's more like a version of a monk's discipline paddle that the head monk uses whenever a student loses focus when meditating.

    From the fluid animations to the atmospheric soundtrack, everything seems meticulously crafted to immerse players in the world of Sun Wukong.

    This has been my understanding as well. The only difference is that I see the very last of the animation as coming full circle to the beginning of the game.

    I have a theory that The Destined One is the Mind of Sun Wukong given form by the relic. He represents Wukong’s yearning for freedom and the will to go on. The mind relic seek other five while the other five seek one. This makes sense considering that the Stone form of Wukong didn’t crack at the beginning. The Destined One is the mind given form, so until that task is completed, he cannot enter the metaphysical realm of Wukong’s mind. Also, i think the Destined One was born from the Stone.
    Destined One is very similar to the Stone Monkey / Broken Vessel because he is bereft of six senses, making him an incomplete living being and cannot speak. However, the Broken Vessel is bereft of all sense but one, Mind. The old monkey said that because he didn’t know about the location of the last relic.
    Some people read Erlang journal entry and thought that Erlang took a relic and thats why it was lost. I think that is not the case. A celestial soldier saw him took a piece but never specify. It was deemed lost simply because it wasn’t separated from Wukong in the first place. Kind of poetic actually. They can take everything from Wukong except his mind, which would later prevailed against all odds in the form of the Destined One.
    And I came into the same conclusion; the relic wasn’t lost, or with Erlang, but it was incomplete. This has two glaring evidences.
    1. If you start NG+ without the true end, the Mind Relic would not awaken and has no upgrade on it. This is very obvious that it was incomplete. We also don’t get the relic after defeating Erlang.
    2.Visual storytelling. All relics have distinctive golden light, but we saw no golden light after defeating Erlang. However, we can see the golden light as the core of the Stone Monkey before he transforms into the Broken Vessel.
    As for why Erlang did what he did, i think its a gamble between him and Wukong. Erlang wanted to see if he can truly escape the shackle, and Wukong had to store his memory or it would fade away after his death. This might be why Erlang said “The win is his” and “Only now i understand that fight”. The condition for retrieving the memory is probably “to prove that you are equal to Sun Wukong even in your incomplete state”

      That actually makes a lot of sense and very fitting for his character. Journey to the West is an allegory, and Sun Wukong represents the MIND. He's also known as the "Intelligent Stone Monkey" so the Destined One being his mind fits a lot for what Sun Wukong represents

  • @hisousihou
    @hisousihou 4 месяца назад +20

    First, it's important to differentiate between the original story and the game. In the original Journey to the West, the Golden Hoop Spell (Tightening Headband) serves a necessary purpose, and its binding force is actually limited to the relationship between Tang Sanzang and Sun Wukong. Tang Monk even promised not to recite the spell unless Wukong behaved violently again (although due to conflicts and misunderstandings, he recited it five times in total). In the end, the headband was indeed removed. The headband symbolizes self-discipline and a greater destiny.
    However, in the game Black Myth: Wukong, the premise is different. The story is based on a conspiracy theory interpretation: the Golden Hoop Spell was never truly removed, and the Buddhist powers are secretly using it to control Sun Wukong. So, in this narrative, not wearing the headband symbolizes breaking free from constraints and continuing the fight for the people.
    A good narrative can reveal different meanings in different times and hands, which is really fascinating.

      The fact that Black Myth's interpretation of Buddhahood is completely different is evidence that they're telling a different interpretation of the Journey to the west.

      In the original Journey to the West, the golden headband (紧箍咒) is not merely a tool of restraint and control; it symbolizes Sun Wukong's spiritual growth. By wearing the headband, completing the journey to the West, going through 81 tribulations, and witnessing the suffering of the world, he attains the great wisdom necessary to achieve Buddhahood. After Sun Wukong becomes a Buddha, the headband automatically disappears. This signifies that he no longer needs external restraints, as he has developed a mature inner self, learned self-discipline, and can act freely without going to extremes.
      This concept is also reflected in Black Myth. After starting the second playthrough, you will notice that the sixth root, "意" (willpower), in the skill tree has the headband as its icon. This symbolizes that Sun Wukong has attained true freedom-not only free from external restraints but also in complete control of his own mind.

    @ 7:38 there is a mistake, the creatures (i.e. end bosses of each chapter) possessing the relics are NOT Erlang's sworn brothers. There is a hidden artefact in each chapter that makes the chapter's end boss much easier to defeat, the secret bosses that guide the Destined One towards these artefacts are Erlang's sworn brothers.

    The epicness of this story almost sounds like Matrix, as if the Celestial Court is the Machine World, The Mortal Realm is The Matrix, Sun Wukong is the Neo and Erlang Shen together with his army are the Agent program, whereas Guanyin and Buddha are the Oracle and Architect of this story that shackle and bind Sun Wukong to comply and finish the journey to the west just like how Neo suppose to reboot the Matrix to clear off the accumulated bugs (yaoguai in the story) happen in the Matrix.

    Looking into the lore of Erlang in Black myth, he is the one that takes Wukong's sixth relic AKA the mind, which is all of Wukong's memory and experience within Erlang's third eyes. When you defeat Erlang and retreat Wukong's mind as the sixth relic, the destined one naturally rejects to wear that band again.
