Pinning some extra info about the cage/set up for anyone who’s new to the channel or those who missed the previous series :) Lemonade is the latest addition to our family, she’s a longhaired cream banded syrian who was about 3-4 months old when this video was filmed. The video captures a lot of brand new experiences for her, including her first time in a sand bath, first time on a wheel, first attempt at burrowing and her first time being in a well sized and enriching enclosure. She was very excited and eager to explore everything, the original footage was 40 minutes long so I did my best to cut it down to a more reasonable length for youtube. The enclosure is 1300sq inches and handmade, there are vlogs on the channel showing how it was built. Everything inside the enclosure is SAFE for the hamster, I would never put anything into an enclosure without being sure of its safety first. I know I don’t really need to point that out but for some reason there is always that one person who wants to claim otherwise* 😅 The substrate is a mixture of hamster-safe woods, meadow hay, and shredded tissue - this combination helps strengthen burrows and reduces the chances of tunnels collapsing. The depth ranges between 27-30cm which is suitable enough for building burrows with chambers. The two dig boxes contain reptibark and coco fibre - you can buy those in the reptile sections of pet shops 🦎 The majority of the enrichment is handmade (videos for them on the channel). The commercial products are things I’ve collected over several years and unfortunately I don’t remember where most of it came from anymore - some of them are probably from Viovet and Hamster Mail. The wheel is an 11” Trixie Rodent wheel that I repainted. It’s pretty old but has held up quite well and is a good budget-friendly wheel, it’s not silent though so if that’s important to you I wouldn’t recommend it. The live plants are cress, chia, and grass - all of these are safe to be eaten both in seed and plant form. *Side note: Always keep in mind that because of the different laws and regulation standards between countries, some things that are safe in one country may not always be safe in another (eg. substrates, building materials) which is why you will often hear conflicting information on safety depending on where you do your research. When checking the safety of a pet product always consult hamster communities/resources that are based in your region so as to avoid receiving misinformation. You can find links to some trusted forums in the description of this video if you need them ✌️
Hey, just as an FYI hamster hideout is now closed (referring to your info box), but many members joined a new forum called hamster clubhouse. We saved a lot of the information from HH, with updates.
Special thanks to the mountain of paracetamol that made this video possible 😂 Dear old C-19 came for a visit last week, has been literally the worst house guest we could imagine, and isn't quite ready to leave us in peace. I edited this video between various states of consciousness so hopefully there are no glaring editing mistakes in it 🤞 Also, it might take me a couple of days to respond to comments because my eyes have decided that look at computer screens = staring into the midday sun 😌 Hope you guys are all well and had a good weekend! 💙
The next time someone asks me why hamsters need so much space, they will be given the link to this video. It is the perfect example of how curious, talented and smart hamsters are, and why they make such awesome pets in the right environment with appropriate space and stimulation. I am in love with Lemonade too.
I love how much thought and care you put in making this cage, and as a thank you you have Lemonade doing the complete opposite in using it. Its endearing, well done Ollie!
Such a cute video, and an extra gold star to Lemonade for burrowing in under that wooden hideout and then getting stuck, then considers gnawing her way through the window for a moment and then just.. gets out by going under it again I am wheezing :'D
Me and my three-year-old brother watched this together and he loved it it’s really nice to show him appropriate care for hamsters because a lot of them are just mazes in basic torture
Hi Ollie & Lemonade! You have always given me courage to diy safe hamster toys, and to add various substrate. This time, i'm so tempted to add those teeny pots of cress 💜 the way L grabbed them with little paws and devoured those plants are so cute!
Wow! I have found you again after not seeing your channel for a good couple of years. Great to see you again Elen. This cage is spectacular with all the different textures and shapes and tunnels to explore! Brilliant! So Glad I have found you again and hope you're feeling ok. xx
It's been a long time since you have a Syrian. At first I'm like she's HUGE. 😂 Too used to watching your dwarfs exploring. Hehe Loved footage of her in dig box and didn't care all the coco fibre was all over her. 😍
The glass front and the tunnels you made along that side really made themselves shine. Was really fun getting to watch Lemonade burrow, the technique and all that. i guess it's obvious but I think it's really neat that she closes her eyes as she burrows. Looks like she enjoyed her new home quite a bit!
I love her! Such a little cutie. Beautiful colouring and that little butt stuck up in the air as she's digging, oh my goodness! 🥰 I miss having a hamster, thank you for filling that gap in my life with such adorable footage!
so cute!! It's lovely seeing her explore everything, especially all the things that you've made before on the channel. She looks like a very happy hamster
OMG, I love Lemonade. She is similar to my Cambell's White actually. She so enjoys her new home. It was a lot of work Ollie but I bet you are really happy with the outcome now?? One super happy hammie!!
I think it was from Viovet's website, but you should be able to find them from other places online just search some keywords like "fruit hamster house" :)
Is it normal for my new hamster to be sleeping all the time or borrowing like he even burrows in the night he’ll come out for food and water and that’s it he’s a brand new baby Russian white dwarf hamster I’m just really concerned that there’s something wrong because he won’t do anything other than sleep he don’t even run on his wheel or anything in his wheel is a 9 inch wheel his cage is appropriately sized to so is this normal ???

I enjoy that the one box that has arrows for "this side up" is in fact upside down. lol
I never had a hamster so watching Lemonade explore, burrow and leap from astonishing heights was an absolute joy!
And that little tail that wiggles as she digs! She is so freaking adorable!!!
I love how much thought and care you put in making this cage, and as a thank you you have Lemonade doing the complete opposite in using it. Its endearing, well done Ollie!

That's one happy hamster ❤️. I think you might have to keep and eye on her though she looks like a bit of a risk taker!

Wholesome to see a happy hamster living their best life
The little butt wiggle when Lemonade was climbing the steps 😭💕 Entirely too precious
Okay but 2:28 when she falls with no reactions has me crying. I’ve watched it like 20 times and it’s still just as funny 😂😭
So cute ☺️ I was surprised how active she was

The enclosure is absolutely gorgeous! Looks like fun! Don’t you worry about Lemonade falling down the ramps and hurting herself?

Luckiest ham in all of Cyprus, and she has no idea 😅❤️
I wish I could have a hamster! But they're illegal in Australia :(
Last year I moved my hamster into a new enclosure and he wouldn’t have any second of it and he’d do his best to try and escape

Lemon 🍋🍋 is checking out her new house 🏡🏡
YASS
Where did you get the pear hideout? I would like to get one for my next Syrian hamster.
