Really helpful and detailed. Instructions were fast but nothing rewinding couldn’t fix ! Really enjoyed
Thanks, always nice to hear from a viewer who enjoys my content.
Just purchased a Model IV with only 600 clicks, and the seller had put it aside because he was not happy with its video capture. Thanks to you , I am getting considerably better video than I was with his old settings that were still in the camera.I do't do vlogs, but these hints are 90% applicable to all video captures it would appear. Especially appreciate the basics you got into with Picture Profiles, including indoors Cine 1 vs Cine 2 comparison. I never thought I would be interested in anything but point-and-shoot home video before ! Anxious to try the 4K to HD conversion, as I had heard too many really bad comments about Model IV 4K ability. Great presentation ! Subscribed today.
Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words, and to know I've been able to help.
thats Maarten, really helpful am a youtuber who is just starting out vlogging :) great tutorials. I got the mark IV - i just find at night the ISO gets ramped up and thus making final footage a little grainy for vlogging, especially when switching between shooting Selfie Video / street videos in splits second.
Thanks for the kind words - the solution is to get a faster lens with a larger (like F2) aperture, or to keep the image somewhat underexposed to emphasize the darkness of the situation.
do you recommend slog2 for night shoot for vlogs? - i do a lot of post production and colour grading I set the Colour to pro on slog2 -
I would not - unless the dynamic range of an image is greater than 8 stops, you're likely to lose more than you gain. That's typically not the case with night shots. Use colour set to pro, but use one of the cinema gamma curves - possibly with a slight reduction in saturation. If you want to grade, you can start with any setting you like - it doesn't have to be SLog. Use Slog only when you can't properly expose the image without it.
thanks Maarten, how would you check on the camera where 8 stops is?
You'd need a spot light meter to measure the darkest and lightest objects. You can tell if after exposing properly to get the highlights in from the right of the histogram, the shadows are too dark. Or if when you're properly exposing for the faces in a shot, the highlights are blown.
Thank you, It was nice to sit down with my new camera and follow along. You even made the video interesting to watch. I've subscribed, although it seems the focus is off in some of the walking shots. Have you noticed this is an issue with the camera?
Thanks for taking the time to comment with such kind words. That is an issue, what you see is about the best the camera can do under those circumstances.
Such a great and detailed review! I did NOT know about the limited stabilization offered in 4k -- this was NOT mentioned in the many other reviews and videos I've watched, so thanks for that important detail and the demo!
Thanks for the kind words, they're always appreciated. I do my best to try and demo everything and get through all the details.
another quality video Maarten, it was your RX10 III video that encouraged me down the Sony still camera path from Nikon. I now have that camera, the AX100 4K camcorder and the RX100M5, Your videos always show good examples of what the changing settings do, also with an enthusiastic tempo. keep up the great work and thank you.
I'm very thankful for your kind words, and I appreciate your time in posting a comment. I'll do my best to keep my standards up to your expectations. Full review of the RX100V follows.
I'm glad I came across your video. I just picked up the Sony RX100 V and have been shooting some video with it. However, I have my dial set to auto. I will be trying out your setting recommendations. Thank you very much.
Always my pleasure - I'm glad you came across it too. I've also just posted my whole review of the RX100V, if that's of interest ... ruclips.net/video/GcNa_eFTzkk/видео.html. I appreciate the kind words, thanks!
Thanks a lot for such a detailed video. Your way of explaining is really simple to understand to people like me who are just getting started with photography and videos. I have an RX100 mark 5A. The menu is different. To start with, the photo and video mode settings are separated. Many of the settings are exactly the same and some are not. I am learning so much from your videos. I really appreciate you.
Right, I should have taken the opportunity to review the 5A version. Thanks for the kind words.
great review ! i have a question normally i shoot in auto mode if i shoot in 4K 24p 100M do i have to set my shutter to 0/24 sec you take 0/60 why is that ? or is the shutter speed for photo mode ?
Thanks for your kind words. Although some videographers/cinematographers want to be more exacting about their shutter speed (based on film cameras that had a rotating disc as the shutter) and want the shutter at exactly 2x the frame rate (observing the 180 degree opening in the disc). I feel that's a degree of precision that's not warranted.
In general, a shutter speed for video of 1/60 provides the right balance between sharp images and motion blur - but in darker situations, I may let the shutter slide to 1/30. Unless I want a specific effect, I would keep the shutter speed for video at or between those two settings, for any frame rate between 24 and 60. For faster frame rates (and I assume you're increasing the frame rate in order to be able to slow the footage later) I would increase the shutter speed - 1/120 for 120 frames, 1/240 for 240, etc. Again, you want some blur so the movement looks smooth.
After setting the shutter, I would select the aperture (based on the depth of field I want for the shot) and then set the ISO to properly expose the image - in this case properly really means to my taste.
For stills, choose the shutter speed based on the usual factors - balancing depth of field with the need to capture a clear still frame of objects in motion - while keeping the ISO low to reduce noise.
Hope this helps.
Maarten Heilbron thx you very helpful for me !
Always my pleasure.
Thanks for the video. I'm a RUclipsr and really new to the whole world of cameras. I have the IV and wonder what would be the best settings for indoor video creation. Thanks in advance .
The only thing I'd change for indoor - particularly if you're shooting in low light is to use a slightly slower shutter - 1/30 - but only if required. And if the scene is fairly static, use manual focus.
I own an a7R II and a7S cameras, currently waiting for RX100 V to be delivered. I must say - knowing the other two cameras and complexity of Sony menus you did a great job explaining the whole thing! Overall this video is very pleasant and straight to the point, loved watching it (= Cheers!
Thank you for your kind words and taking the time to comment.
i do not own a Sony, but this is an excelent video.
That is a very nice thing to say, thanks for the kind words.
Very nice worked video Sir! Thank you very much.
My pleasure, thank you for the kind words.
hey would you recommend the iv or the v for vlogging? taking in considering of the price and exchange for the features do you think its worth it?
If you are buying a camera specifically for vlogging, it wouldn't be this one. There are less expensive cameras with larger sensors (Sony A5100) that would be better suited.
***** who is the mark 5 for? I've seen some RUclips use it for vlog. How come a5100 Maarten? Are the quality the same?
It can can certainly be used for vlogging, but with a bigger sensor and lower price point, I'd prefer the A5100.
Thanks Maarten, Your reviews and instructions are always the best!
Glad you like them! Always a pleasure to read kind words.
Is it better in lowlight video then the Sony NEX-5R/6? even though those cameras have way bigger sensors
I wasn't able to compare them side by side = might be best to check the tech details in the reviews at dpreview.
+Maarten Heilbron thank you
always my pleasure.
Thanks for these videos! Your English is very understandable for someone who really knows little! I bought a Mk4 recently and I am understanding how to use it. Thank you so much. Greeting from Argentina!
Always nice to read that viewers appreciate my content and my style. Thanks for your kind words - and please say hello to all my friends in Argentina
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for answering maarten, your videos really helped me to better understand the operation of the rx. Of course they will be sent. Best wishes!
great video! I have been finding lots of noise issues with my ISO and wondering what is the highest ISO I can have before getting noise in video?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It is a subjective question, but in my view it's about 1600 - however, it is very dependant on how dark the scene is, as the noise shows up primarily in dark areas of the scene. Which picture profile are you using? Some exaggerate the noise more than others.
A great volume of useful nuggets as per. One viewing is never enough for me. I'll try to carry some over to the Mklll. Thanks, as always.
That's so nice of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
I just bought this camera & your videos are very helpful, Thank you
Thanks for the kind words, they are appreciated.
if you mind I need your advice. Im preparing for a making short film bec I'll go in a film festival so can I use this camera as rx100 V ? thank you
I don't mind. Film festivals usually don't ask which camera you used to make the film. If your content is compelling and your technique is good, they don't care. To be more direct - the RX100 series are suitable for video production for shorts for film festivals.
Great video! Just what I needed! I have to admit I chuckled a little every time you said "the fun button".
Thank you for your kind comment, it's appreciated. I used to say "fnuh", until a viewer wrote to say he said "fun".
Maarten Heilbron The Sony RX100 V is my main camera for my videos accompanied by the GoPro Hero4 Silver, Phantom 4 and my iPhone.
An interesting selection.
very useful video, I like the calm way you explain things :)
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thank you very much.
I've had my eye on the RX100 cameras since the Model 2 / Mark 2 / II / MK2 has been out, and am seriously considering downsizing from my Canon 500D (Rebel T1i) simply because I'm not using the T1i enough, mostly because of its' size.
Should I bother spending a full chunk of change on the RX100V, or make my Canadian dollar go further with the RX100IV? I mostly shoot photos as a hobby, but have always longed for the ability to capture quality video when the need arises.
PS: I love how clear and concise your review and settings videos are - there's no bull, and they contain everything you need.
I certainly appreciate your very kind words - thank you. If you're thinking about vlogging, I might stay with the Canon - larger sensor, mic input ... Otherwise, if it's size that's bothering you, this is a perfect companion for those days when you don't want to lug a DSLR around with you. I wouldn't be in a hurry to trade in the DSLR yet - let it sit with you a while. And yes, the IV remains a good value.
Maarten! amazing video mate. Really enjoy watching ur videos. I own just the RX100 V but after watching ur other videos, they really make me want to have a couple more cameras :D Thank you for these videos! have a nice day :)
+Afiq Safwan Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
Maarten. I'm torn between the g7x ii and sony rx100 iv. Video will be my priority. Cant decide between the touch screen of the Canon for easy autofocus or the 4k of Sony which, as you had said, good for post editing. Any suggestion? Please.
This is a decision you're going to have to make yourself, based on the factors which are most important to you. And if video is important, maybe also consider the Panasonic LX100 (ruclips.net/video/_Lhsrc9oG5U/видео.html) or LX10 (waiting for my review unit).
Got my LX10, its awesome. Million thanks
Thank you very much, your vid is brimful with helpful information guiding through the complex and sometimes confusing Sony menu. Never learnt so much about vlogging with my Sony rx 100 in such a short period of time! But there‘s the problem: You are explaining everything so rapidly that I had to listen and view mini parts of the vid four or five times, to find the right feature in the menu and to adjust my settings. Could you please repeat the vid in slow motion?😉😉
Thanks, a pleasure to read your kind words. It sounds like you were able to get the information you needed. If you want slow, use RUclips’s settings for slow play, that should work.
Excellent video. Just got the mark 5 so this was great! Can you do a video or explain more about the different "pp:s" and how to use them? Cheers
Thank you for your kind words.
"pp:s" = picture profiles? They're very similar among most Sony models.
I've provided more detail in several videos, this is a good starting point: ruclips.net/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/видео.html
I just ordered the rx100mv. I have always shot cannon dslr so have a lot to learn but I’m using this for travel photos and a bit of video here and there. I will use aperture priority for my photos and will figure that out but what’s the. Easier one click button setup
For video that’s good for more POV video as opposed to vlog? I don’t talk to the camera much so really want everything in focus.
Yes, vlogging is more demanding than POV.
First of all, as many your videos as this video also include very usefull information, tnx for that. I have question about using and learning how to use light, and how to learning basic rule for using settings correctly? Where can i start?
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for your comments. There are no real rules any longer - they were required in the days of film when you couldn't see the results quickly. The auto settings know the "rules" and will get you the right exposure. And even in manual mode you can see the results immediately and make the appropriate adjustments.
There are only two things to know: changing the aperture will change the depth of field and changing the shutter speed will freeze (or blur) the action.
The best way to start is by taking pictures - lots of pictures. Experiment with the various settings (A mode to play with aperture, S for shutter) with autoISO. Shoot a variety of subjects (still lifes, pets, people, architecture) while out walking around at various times of day. Then have a careful look at the images you've taken (on a larger screen, it's hard to see details on the LCD) and go out and shoot some more.
Thanks for the awesome video. I have one irritating problem which I don't know how to change; I constantly end up changing my shutter speed or aperture settings by accidentally touching the control wheel. I thought "wheel lock" would take care of this but, doesn't. Is there a way to change this? Thanks again for all your awesome videos! 👍😊
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I'm sorry, I don't have a solution to this.
Bravo Marteen, you are a really Woody Allen, of the camera's tests! I am always very enjoy to see you, etc Bonne continuation!
WOW - that's a comparison I never expected to hear. Thank you very much for your kind words. Mille fois merci.
Informative as always. Best detailed camera reviewer for me in youtube. Wish I could subscribe to you more than once. Thanks Maarten.
Once is more than enough - there'll be several more posts in the next few days as I get around to completing a bunch of projects.
Thanks for this helpful video, and your other reviews of the 4 and 5. In terms of shooting video, how much better is the m5's autofocus? I have some problems with the 4's autofocus when filming family shots with lots of people (which might just be pilot error).
Thanks for the kind words - it's always nice to hear my videos are useful and appreciated. Not sure it's much better. I assume you're using video mode. Which focus settings are you using? Is face detect on?
Thanks for the swift response. I'm quite new to the camera. I'm in video mode with either A or S mode, and have face detect on. I think I have been using AF-C mode, and been experimenting with Wide, and expandable spot. Sometimes it slowly focuses on a face (takes 1 second) then stays in focus for 1 second and then then out of focus. This is indoors, so maybe the lighting is a problem. I was wondering if the M5's AF-A mode would help avoid this?
Whoops, i think i replied in the wrong place! I'll try again.
I would recommend S, with a setting of 1/60 (1/30 if you're in a dark setting). Focus in low light is problematic, as phase detection has trouble. In video mode only AFC and M are available (even with the M5). If you can use manual focus, do. Maybe lighting is the problem. An inexpensive LED on camera (use a bracket) light will help.
Thanks for the tips Maarten. I'm trying those settings today and tomorrow. In your opinion is the M5 worth the extra cost if the only feature I'd want it for is the faster autofocus and the new AF-A mode? (| can't still return my M4 and get the 5). My video footage often has 4 children running around in front of the camera, so focusing is key for me!
Do all these changes affect stills also, even though they were set under the Movie mode on the dial ? If so, do you know if these settings could easily be toggled on/off or maybe stored in Memory mode and movies shot under memory settings ?
Yes, settings carry from one mode to the next. Yes, memory can be used for video.
Hi, good video sir! I have a question about something that kind of annoys me with my RX100 V.. When I go to transfer my video clips from my SD card to my computer, I notice each one comes with an XML document, which I never use.. I use windows on a PC, and I dont need these documents, and Im not even sure what they are for.. My question for you is, do you happen to know how to tell the camera to stop making these XML documents with every little video I capture? It makes the transfer much easier and less cluttered when Im on my computer.. let me know if you can help, thanks.. cheers!
I appreciate your kind words. Many editing applications use the XML files to identify and import. It's necessary only to point the import dialog at the card and the files are catalogued and imported. If you are importing the files directly, try this method, as it greatly simplifies the process. And I'm not sure why they bother you - they're very small.
But as long as we're on this topic, my aggravation is file numbering. The video files start at 001 each time the card is formatted, unlike the stills files which are consecutive.
they are annoying because when I want to upload real fast to my computer, which I always do before moving them to premiere, I select all, and drag the videos over then go do something else while uploading.. Thats what I do with other cameras.. with this camera tho, there is an additional task, more like a first world problem, but anyway.. I first need to delete all XML files, so I dont select all those too and move them to my computer, because I never use them.. so, whats just wondering if you knew of a way to get the camera to not write them, but I guess it cant do that.. all good..
And Im not exactly sure I understand how to use them either based on your explanation.. but maybe I will research their use further, but didnt find any good explanations either when I google searched it..
as for the files numbering, I think I saw another youtube video someone else did on how to fix that, not sure.. but why would you need Videos numbered? I always just name my videos, because its not like a timelapse where you definitely need them to be numbered..
Why not just drag the whole folder? That's as quick and easy as it gets.
If you can find that video again, certainly would appreciate the numbering solution - I'm not aware of any fix to that.
Awesome video! I have the RX100V and love it. There is one thing that I can't figure out which is how to take control of focusing. Is it possible to completely take over and Manual focus in video and still shot modes on this camera? If so, could you point me in the right direction in regards to how to do so? Thanks again...... I've learned a tremendous amount from you! 👍😊
Thanks for the kind words. Use the function menu to select manual focus, then turn the ring on the lens. It's demonstrated in my full review: ruclips.net/video/GcNa_eFTzkk/видео.html
Thank You Maarten! How in the world did I miss that!! Your Full Review video was awesome as well........ Highly appreciated. Ray 👏👍😊
Always nice to know I've been able to help, and always happy to do so.
Maarten, love your presentations. I just upgraded to the Sony Rx100 VI from the III and need your suggestions for video on the VI. Are you going to be making a video showing suggestions for video on the Rx100 VI?
I appreciate the kind words. I had not planned to update this video - did you feel that the information provided was not suitable?
Another excellent review. I'm just starting to use the video features of the V and I'm impressed. The audio is too susceptible to wind noise outdoors. Do you know of any decent windmuffs for the onboard mics?
You can likely improvise with something like a cloth or ribbon that includes an adhesive backing. However, you're likely better off with an external recorder that mounts with the camera. I use the Tascam DR-70D.
Thanks, I'll try some felt. I have a Zoom H2N with a dead cat but I wanted something smaller. I might look for a lav mic I can use tethered to my iPhone since I always have that.
Some people use these: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/758560-REG/Rycote_065546_Micro_Windjammers.html
Thanks, helpful, hadn't seen those before.
Very useful as always, Marteen.
Not a fan of the additional crop introduced with the "Active" stabilization setting, which is the bare minimum you want to use while shooting handheld.
I appreciate the kind words. While I agree that the crop introduced by the additional levels of stabilization can be worrisome, for most viewers a small drop in quality that's introduced is much less noticeable than wobbly camera work - as you see here in the original 4K footage (with the umbrella).
I agree, but my point is you no longer have a 24mm lens, at best, but something else. So if you factor the additonal 4Kcrop+addtional crop you get by proper stabilization, you end having footage that looks nothing like the lens is telling you (Latest Panasonid GX85 comes to mind, where you go from a theoretical 24mm to 36mm, no less, just by shooting 4K).
This is a very common problem with cameras nowadays, and while I¨m not sure about the rx100 mkV exact crop, I´m positive is not going to be pretty...
While from a completely technical point of view, I agree - it does feel a little pedantic as an argument.
The image in the viewfinder and on the LCD remains an accurate representation of the scene you are shooting. I have no idea how, on a digital camera, one can judge "what the lens is telling you". The real issue is that the sensor's active area is further reduced.
Those comments might have value when applied to a 35mm film camera particularly a rangefinder where understanding the lens to film size mapping matters, but with a one inch sensor, it's not really appropriate, as the "crop" is immediately applied to the image and is not apparent to the photographer/filmmaker/viewer. Those who are going to be bothered by this issue, are likely not within the target market for this model.
All the same, an interesting point and a good conversation.
I´m sorry you feel it´s little bit "pedantic".
I also no have no idea why you don´t seem to care about shooting with a field of view of 36mm instead of 24mm ( AKA, "what the lens is telling you").
And regarless of what you see through the viewfinder, the wide (or not so wide) angle you´re able to shoot with, and therefore, frame your shot with, are obviously, and objectively, VERY different.
And I´m afraid it does not have anything to do with what you presume is the so called target audience ( "Those who are going to be bothered by this issue") since not only I am both very interested in this camera AND very bothered by this issue, I believe most video enthusiasts who are willing to spend this kind of money for a compact camera are equally goinig to be bothered by it. As a matter of fact, it´s obviously just a technical limitation that we have to live with, today; something that will be disappearing in a very short period of time, when interpolation/image stablization does not require to rob us from our theoretical focal length ( AKA, "what the lens is telling you").
But hey, to each their own. Glad to know that you´re happy with it, and I´m sure I´ll keep being "pedantic" for a short period of time, anyway.... ;)
Best, Marteen.
It's not that I don't appreciate the distinction - but there are very few of us left who have any idea what a 24mm field of view represents in the abstract. The only field of view that matters to most is what's seen through the lens.
Another great video! I have the RX100 M3 and I’m still trying to find the best recording settings for recording video. Will the settings in this video apply to my M3 too? I’m in a PAL region and mainly record family days out and vlogs. I don’t have the necessary expertise to make my own adjustments to things like white balance so I just use the Auto settings but I do sometimes record in Vivid as I like the bright colours. The thing I have the biggest problem with is it seems to take my camera ages to focus when I move from recording something further away to something closer. Any suggestions you have for what focus settings I may need to review and which recording settings are best would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. Yes, these settings, to the extent they're available on the M3 should work and provide good results.
As for focus, cameras of this vintage did not provide very good continuous focus results in video mode. It will help if you use a smaller aperture (F8 or higher) as that will increase the depth of field.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you. I'm going to take some time to check through all the settings you mention in the video and I'll look at the aperture as well.
Very good, hope that helps.
Maarten Heilbron I’ve been given the opportunity to exchange my Sony RX100 M3 for the Canon G7X M2. I’ve tried to find a good comparison video but haven’t been able to so I was hoping you’d give me your opinion on whether or not this would be a good exchange for me to make? I’m looking for a camera that has better AF whilst recording vlogs and a better zoom which I believe the G7X M2 does. I mainly make home movies and travel vlogs so would the G7X M2 do a better job overall for me? It doesn’t have a viewfinder but I never use the one on the Sony anyway.
@@pennybunty If the issue is AF, you will not find the improvement you're looking for. For vlogging, as the camera is a fairly consistent distance from you, try using manual focus and a slightly smaller aperture, that will stop the AF from hunting for focus.
Great Review as always :-) Are you able to make a tutorial only on sony picture profiles? How to use them? How to color grade them & post production? I know it's asking for much but there is nothing out there which explains in detail? Would be happy to pay for the tutorial :-)
I appreciate your kind words, thanks! Payment is not required for the my video about picture profiles (Sony A6300 Profiles, Logs and LUTs: ruclips.net/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/видео.html) - although I have not covered grading and post production. I recommend that you download Davinci Resolve (it's free) and watch their excellent tutorials. Most of my videos about Sony cameras that include picture profiles (like the A7S2 and the A6300) also include some tips and tricks for using those settings. Hope this helps.
Maarten Heilbron thanks for replying :-) I'll have a look at Davinci Resolve
Very good. It's an excellent environment to learn.
I like most of these settings, however I during daytime I also like to record HD at 60p50M. Then conform to 24p as needed other wise have 2.5x slow motion option. Dawn, dusk, night, low lighting indoors I switch to 24p. Also, I nearly always shoot in movie mode with aperture priority to control depth of field to some extent and let frame rate vary (my taste), with auto iso, and ND on. Finally, whenever I'm not walking around and camera is stable, I typically switch to 4k24p100M. Also, another 'dual record' benefit: when you use it, the lower quality files can be assigned as proxies if using premiere pro cc. For 4k footage, using these proxies will be much faster than trying to directly edit 4k files from sony cameras.
While I appreciate the ability to slow footage down, I'd recommend the 120 frame setting, as it records at 100Mbits. And if your final output is 24 frames, then I'd shoot in 24, otherwise the jitter of the 3:2 pulldown will introduce an unnatural motion effect. Also for visually smooth motion, I would recommend a shutter between 1/30 and 1/60.
That's an excellent suggestion to speed up the editing process with Premiere.
Do picture profiles also effect RAW photos? Or just JPEG and videos?
They do not affect RAW files.
Can you do a review of the Sony mic recorder, ICD-SX2000?
Thanks for the request, I'm going to stick (mostly) with cameras.
Do you use a selfie stick or just long arms?
A selfie stick - actually a monopod with a ball head.
Did you use any microphone in this camera?
The RX100 V does not have a mic input jack. I use a Sennheiser ClipMic with the Apogee recorder on my iPhone and sync the recordings in editing.
Thanks but on HD how many minutes you can video recording and how many GB it takes.
A single recording is limited to 30 minutes. At 50Mbits (HD) depending on the scene, etc about 12GB.
Thank you very much for the advices! Really love this video! Thank you!
A pleasure to read your kind words, always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my work.
@@MaartenHeilbron yes I really appreciate, this kind of video are really important and it make me grow a lot :). Greetings from Italy by the way :D. And thank you again!
Hello Italy - we've always enjoyed our time there. And thanks again for your kind words.
how come the video quality were really noisy in low light at frame 6:56?
I am walking on a dark street with few streetlights - it's an example of how you can shoot in very low light, but there will be some noise. Perfectly acceptable in my view.
You're awesome :)
That's very nice of you to say, thanks!
Please I need help finding eye af on this camera I've looked everywhere on RUclips and it seems like nobody is showing it! Why would Sony hide such a great feature like this?
I know, it's completely hidden. It has the be assigned to a custom button.
Maarten Heilbron I found it thank you
always happy to help
Maarten Heilbron I got another question why isn't the autofocus fast on mine? It's slow when taking pictures or video. It seems like my Sony NEX-5R is faster in focusing. Is it fast right out of the box or do I have to change settings?
Not sure - I'd recommend AFS or AFC wide - or for more specific work, try flexible spot or eye AF (it needs to be assigned to a custom button).
Another great review! Can you please do a review on Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS with Sony A6000...?
Thanks. Let me see if Sony has one of those to lend me for a review.
This was gold; thank you.!!!
Thanks for your kind words and taking the time to comment.
wow a very useful video especially youtube vloggers
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Which Tripod were you using while walking? Joby?
I was using the Velbon HM10 monopod which has a swivel head. It's no longer available, but this is the current version: bhpho.to/2kiP2Hr - I don't like those Joby ones, not reliable, not extendable, although I do understand they're Mr. Niestadt's choice.
Thanks Maarten, I didn't realise the RX100 was now at version 5! I bet I still can't afford it! :-)
Affordable is all relative - if it's a useful and compelling solution, it's easy to make it affordable.
I agree. It's a camera I've been in awe of since version 1 and I would buy it in a heartbeat if I really needed it. As an aside, as I've been typing this I've just seen the Sony a6500 in my recommended videos list. I can't believe the a6300 has already been superseded, and it looks like our wish for a touch screen has finally been granted! And in-body stabilisation too! I hope they give you one to review Maarten.
I agree that the A6500 with some interesting, but not "most requested" features came very quickly. I'm told I'll get one to review early in December.
Hey how do I turn on the red light when recording?
There's a red light?
I just got a the RX100v and I cant work out how to get phase detect in the movie mode, it's greyed out even with modest video settings
Phase detection is not available when shooting XAVC-S HD at 120/100 frames.
@@MaartenHeilbron I'm using 1080 @ 24pfs. However the phase detect is greyed out, not sure if that's normal?
@@rocketjacket That's the only thing I can think of. Which focus mode/settings are you using?
@@MaartenHeilbron Its set for wide focus area, XAVC S HD, 24P 50M and the phase detect is greyed out and displaying off.
@@rocketjacket Not sure what other setting might be in your way. When you switch to stills, is it available?
Is the 120 fps 100m 1080 res ?
Yes.
excellent information thanks
So nice of you to say, thanks for commenting.
10 dollar for a time lapse mode??? Does it has any manual or anything worth that price tag for a mode?
There is an online manual - you can find it at Sony's playmemories site. While, of course, Sony could/should include this in the firmware as some other companies do, it's quite a bargain price compared to purchasing an intervalometer. And I daresay if you can afford this camera, you can likely also afford the $10.
wonderfull thanks
I appreciate your kind words, thanks.
My mind boggles! Thanks anyway!
Certainly you said "my mind vloggles" before auto-correct stepped in? :-) Always my pleasure.
Maarten Heilbron good one! LOL
5 minutes and NO mic input, thanks for that information, I'll move on
Always happy to hear I've provided useful information to help viewers make a decision.
wish they lower the price.l 😊
hehe - there are few products that would not be immediately improved with a lower price.
consider a used one. I purchased a used rx100iv for nearly $200usd off retail in nearly new condition from b&h in usa.
Excellent suggestion for the price conscious, particularly from a reputable dealer.
Excellent content as usual! Thank you for upload this kind of video. It is very useful for video enthusiasm.
I've watched this one almost 10 times already.
I'm deciding between the RX100 M4 or M5. I want to use it mainly as a video camera to make my travel video. (Just like this one vimeo.com/96372076 )
I only use manual focus on my current camera, Fuji XE-1, when I shoot video. (I know...it is not a very good camera for video department)
So, now I'm going to upgrade to a (used) RX100 M4 or M5.
From what I know the M5 has faster focus than the M4. But as I don't do vlogging and use manual focus,
I'm not sure the benefit of faster focus on M5 over M4 for my usage. What is your opinion? Are there any benefit of choosing M5 over M4?
That's very kind of you to say - I'm happy to hear that it's providing useful information for you. And thanks for the link to your video. If you don't (or don't often) use the autofocus, then I'm not sure there are many benefits to the M4 over the M5.
Maarten Heilbron Thank you for your swift response. Really appreciated. I will get the M4 as your advice.
Greeting from Thailand!
Always happy to help. Planning our first visit to Thailand later this year.
Maarten Heilbron That’s great! If there’s anything I can help, please don’t hesitate. Hope you have a nice trip.
Thanks for your kind offer.
