Great penultimate (?!) show, men! T-shirt ideas: “I’m just a monkey with fiber optic cable!” “In my monkey brain… “ “I’m going to take your wrench away!” “Young Logan, move those pallets!” ~ Davey Cretin, from Cretin Classics.
Enjoyed this! Maybe I need to check out these two albums after all. I interviewed Mark about 2 years ago and it was a great chat. I am sure he would love to promote his new album on your show and talk about Grand Funk's music on your channel.
These two albums were better than I expected though I was surprised not a single mention of the single Y.O.U from Grand Funk Lives, it’s a lost classic
Back in this time period a fellow who worked for me found GF Lives in a record store and bought it for me as a birthday present and I was flabbergasted because I didn't even know they were back together. I love these 2 LPs but many in the GF community don't even know about them.
Hey Grant, you questioned the fact why you like these albums but the point is you like them and that’s all that matters. I don’t believe there is no such thing as an album that you shouldn’t like if you’re a music fan enjoy it.
I wish Mark would play some of the deep cuts from "Grand Funk Lives" in his live show. Maybe replace "the Locomtion" or "Bad Time" with these killers!😋
Grand Funk's connection to Warner Brothers either died or was fired, nothing to do with them. But without someone from the label giving their input they were screwed. I've played live GFR since 1975. Doing all types & eras of GFR including tracks from both LP's. Crowds filled the dance floor. Imta Farner clones & put favorite line in several bands was 1 good Funk deserves another often 3 in a row, dance floor always packed. New to the channel I signed a release form for my GFR founding for Sandy (Don's DJ wife)
For the generation of kids in the 80s---anyone who saw the Heavy Metal film or heard the Soundtrack---it was a good idea to introduce this band to the post-baby boom generation, so they were not entirely invisible---although, I think "Queen Bee" could have had better placement in the film, because it sure beats a lot of the songs that were on that soundtrack. Also, being the 80s---Full Moon/Warner Brothers should have had them doing music videos! I can totally imagine a music video for "Still Waitin" or had that song included in an 80s teen flick, because it sounds like a song that would fit in one of those movies, too
In some ways, "Grand Funk Lives" was an even heavier album than their "pre" Phoenix albums. GFR started out as a cool mix of hard/heavy rock and soul music (after all, "funk" was their middle name!)--but for this album, the emphasis was more on the heavy rock and less on the soul. They got on the Heavy Metal soundtrack that year for a reason, so in that respect, WB wasn't doing them a total disservice. In fact, I would dare say, "Queen Bee" was the best song on the soundtrack--my only argument was that they could have placed it in a better spot in the film to maximize its potential. There were bands just as deserving who should have had a song in the movie---I'm thinking of the Joe Perry Project, but it was a select few who got to be there, and GFR was one of them, and that song in particular should have been THE hit from the soundtrack!
1. I have always loved both of these albums. "Grand Funk Lives" I'd give a 9.5, "What's Funk" a 7.5. Only thing wrong with either one of them are the cover versions. 2. You could get Mark to be on with Don, but you'd never get Don to agree to be on with Mark because he can't face him. What he did is despicable. 3. Both of these albums were released on cd in 2001 via Rhino / Warner/Elektra/Asylum and go for big bucks on eBay. Glad I bought them when they came out.
@@GrantsRockWarehaus Many of the long time fans were turned off by the post Mark, Don & Mel period. Early GFR was not a pop band and the music rocked hard and the band was panned by the critics but thought of the fans as the Peoples Band. After the Terry Knight fiasco the band needed to blend into the AM POP Charts and they hired Todd Rudgren specifically for that purpose. They added Craig Frost and Don Brewer started writing with Frost and they published more polished pop sounding music. We're An American Band became their first really popular song hitting #1 (PS Brewer is Credited with writing credits but really Mark Farner did the Music, Don had the lyrics but Don specifically asked Mark to get full credit and Mark gave it to him.) Many of the original fans gave up on Grand Funk when they put out The Locomotion and Some Kind of Wonderful. I myself lost interest when I heard The Locomotion and I had the LP and they had made it look glitzy and almost Glam. I didn't like the Glam bands. I didn't buy anymore GFR Lps till much later when I would go to flea markets and bought the later albums from used sellers. I found the Zappa produced album in the bargain bin and loved it as they returned to a harder rock sound but I only got the 1981 album when my buddy saw it and gave it to me as a birthday present and I got back into GFR again and kept looking after that. I am an Administrator of a Mark Farner FaceBook Group and I am in the middle of running a Poll to choose the Favorite 3 GFR Albums and the voting so far is basically Early GFR/T. Knight era and other than WAAB nothing gets mush attention by the fans. Mark Farner himself in recent interview on The Sea Of Tranquility YT Channel picked his personal 3 Fav GFR albums and Mark picked 1) E Pluribus Funk, 2) Closer To Home and 3) On Time. Grand Funk Lives to me is better than the Zappa Good Singin' - What's Funk is about the same. So all-in-all not bad, they sit maybe about in the middle of GFR's output for me. Schacher wanting to concentrate on classic cars instead of music sounds like Jeff Beck...Overall 6 good tracks from Lives & 5 from Funk - so Lives takes it by a nose when ranking these two albums. Only one more release to go (except for the archival Live: The 1971 Tour & some compilations) - the wonderful Bosnia from '97 which is actually probably my overall fave GFR record (I know I'm in the minority) beating out Closer To Home/Survival/Phoenix
Still Waiting was a Don Brewer written song which generally meant that he wrote the lyrics but he is given full credit.
Hopefully we get one more episode of this series, thanks Grant, DC..💪😎🎼🎸🔥🎧....
More to come!
I’ve given this album a 10 well deserved
This tune, no reason why is so good
Mark has said No reason why was written about the death of John Lennon

Missed the show , have a good music related excuse, was recording drums last night in the studio . Will watch today ! Thanks Grant 👌
Excuse accepted... haha

So glad we looked at them tonight!
Sorry I missed this livestream. I’m also amazed at how cool these 80s Grand Funks tracks are
I was blown away. I'd hadn't heard these albums prior to the show
Dennis Bellinger sings and does great background vocals on these 2 LPs.

I know, but the general GF community don't seem to like these records. I'm one of the few that think that GFR got better over time. Go figure...

Wouldn't be the 1st time a band lost support when the record company connection leaves... yep

Good luck getting Mark Farner & Brewer on at the same time.
it would never happen

I agree with it being heavier... 100%

The twofer on Wounded Bird is still in print
@@GrantsRockWarehaus Sure is. I've heard the sound quality isn't great but been tempted to get it just for the extra track.
First track on What's Funk 'Rock & Roll American Style' is one of my fav GFR tunes. Lots of early GFR fans don't like these 2 albums.
I'm not sure why they don't dig them 🤷🏼♂️

We are covering the "1971 Tour" and "Bosnia" here in a couple of weeks!
@@GrantsRockWarehaus Yes!
Yeah, me either. Just Queen Bee off the soundtrack
The good songs are truly outstanding, but there are some real stinkers on these two albums.
