I remember when I got the first Reserva bottle and was like... that's sweet. Finally bought the planas for a cocktail and tasted it and was like wow, that's a lot of flavor in a $20 white rum.
How would you compare this one to Zapaca 23? Diplomatico Rum Reserva Exclusiva used to be my favorite but I liked Zapaca 23 because even if the sweetness level was close to the same based on my palate, I felt Zacapa 23 had a longer finish and more complex.
Does Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva still contain about 40 g sugar/l? In the EU Diplomatico is labled as Botucal (because of a name conflict with a brandy from Aldi called Diplomat). According to EU regulations for rum (in force since 2022) the new Botucal Reserva Exclusiva has a sugar content of slightly less than 20 g/l. This is comparable with Plantation XO.
I have the Reserva and wasn’t going to pick up the Familia but maybe I should. Edit: just looked it up and it’s 79.99 CAD. On the top end of what I spend currently and too high for a daily sipper but I’ll add it to my wish list 👍
It's not a cheap rum but I think it's way better than many other famous "spanish" rums and cheaper than most of them. It's sweet, very sweet (I liked it alot when I started my rum journey, a lil bit less now that i'm into high abv ones) and a lil bit less smooth than a really good rum but I think it's one of the best options to start sipping rums (I don't consider cheap rums as options).
i bought a bottle of diplomatico reserve and I have to be honest. while its a decent rum I really like the Plantation Barbados 5 year more. I really was expecting so much better for $40.00 on the Diplomatico
Have you ever tried their Ambassador? I tried it at a rum festival and I think that’s their flagship. We were in Aruba a few years ago and watched in astonishment as someone ordered a mojito made with Ambassador. Yikes
In my opinion it is a good rum but I wouldn’t call it underrated. It’s interesting but I enjoy some cheaper rums a lot more. Chairman’s Legacy for example is half the price but suits my palate better.
@@StevetheBarmanRumReviews Almost, I looked it up now: 50€ for the Botucal Seleccion de Familia and 30€ for the Chairman’s Legacy. But I would probably prefer the Chairman’s even if the difference would be the same as in the UK.

I thought Reserva was a good rum, then I tried the Familia and haven't looked back since
You can’t please everybody and opinions are personal. Familia is a fine ass rum! A tremendous sipper. Keep it up Diplomatico 👊🏻
Totally agree with you! 👍👏
Remember trying this last year and really enjoying it! I think the Mantuano is pretty decent too

Thanks for the review. This is the best rum
Had a sample of this and it blows the reserva away.
It’s crazy how different they are.

As far as I’m aware, DRE still has about 38g/l but I honestly haven’t paid any attention to it for ages. So not 100% sure
Diplomatico is called Diplomatico in the EU. Maybe it's just your country that has a different name?
I saw it with that name in Poland
On their official website there is the same amount of sugar in both Reserva Exclusiva and Selección de Familia.

i think this is the rum i saw used in a rum fashioned and i've been meaning to pick it up, just slipped down my list as there are so many to try!
It's actually really good! Totally different beast to the Reserva Exclusiva

Thanks for the video!
I got the white to make homemade kaluah. Wasn't everything I wanted from a white rum. The green bottle is great but sweet.
What is your opinion on Diplomatico no 3 Distillery Collection,it is one to remember?
Haven't had it, sorry.
I can see people hating it because it’s a lil sweet
The planas is of course aged. 2 years blended with a dash of 6 I believe, and the color filtered.
* and then color filtered.

NOpe, Actually not really tried any other Diplos except their core 3.
Which one would you pick between reserva exclusiva and the mantuano?
Probably Mantuano. However the Seleccion de Familia is even better. Nicely aged without being too sweet.
@@StevetheBarmanRumReviews Thank you!!
the planas is my rum of choice
I thought all diplomatico rum was excellent rum then I found out how much added sugar goes in it now I just don’t buy it .
I just tend to avoid this brand as it is not my favourite flavour profile. I just bought flor de Cana 12 and it is a great rum for the money

Half the price?!?! There's about £10 in it in the UK. (Trade prices about £8!) Hahaha
