@@sirsanti8408@sirsanti8408 No. It didn't have a net. It was just a simple one. We use the feet of it at the ends of our raised beds to tie shade cloth onto. One man's junk... 😊
I invested in a 40ft polycarbonate tunnel last year 😊 husband wanted me to start with a 10x10, i said nope 😂, I'm getting what i want and doing it right in the first place
Planning to build a victorian style greenhouse from reclaimed bricks, donated glass and new wood. Appreciate the suggestion on using cedar, I'll look into it and report back in the spring 👍
I have been building my own greenhouse this year, wasent quite done for this summer, but will be ready for the 2025 season :-) i love it allready, even thou its not 100% just the fact that it had a roof and sidings, made my tomatoes grow alot, and my pepperplant seem to love it. When the outer shell is completly done, i cant wait to build beds, tables, and shelves for maximising the space.
I bought a small 6' x 6' aluminum frame greenhouse with polycarbonate panels - after watching the video it makes me wish I spend the few extra hundred for the 6' x 8'. I didn't really have the funds to get a bigger one but it is still a big step up from working with a small 4 x 5 plastic covered shelter! I will be setting it up in the spring and I'm really looking forward to my first year with a greenhouse 🙂
Hi Ben, try looking at wood rot cure, simply drill tiny hokes to affected timber, paint on the product, it sets off rock hard. Your timber frame will go on for seasons to come. (Ive used it to great effect on sash windows, and rate it highly)
I ordered mine just before Covid hit. My husband and I put it together and I love it. 8 X 8ft. Aluminum with plastic panels. It does heat up excessively in the summer. I have the louvre on the side, automatic vent in the roof and a big fan in the end. I have a water barrel with a solar drip system to water the plants. My thermometer has a display in the house but I still need a reminder in my phone to run out and open and close the door when the sun shines. I don’t heat it in the winter so primarily use it spring and fall. I use the garden planner and love it too. ❤
I finally built my greenhouse this summer, salvaging old bricks for the bottom two feet, old louvered windows all around, while using new polycarbonate for the roof and concrete for the floor. It's been so much fun learning how to "cool" the major summer heat here in Texas, using raised beds my husband and I made out of old store wooden merchandise displays, using goat fence squares for their trellises. Thanks for all your videos, as you tremendously teach me how to seed, plant, water, and grow almost everything I desire! You've been my stand-by guide for years, turning my brown thumbs greener. :)
Oh Thank you Ben!! This is a great video! My husband is going to build me a greenhouse, and you have just given really great advice and lots to think about!
I started with a glasshouse 30 yrs ago, switched to pollytunnel but had to replace the plastic too often(roughtly every 3 years very windy) and now have a geodome(expensive but have had no trouble with it for the last 4 years), will install another vent this winter as the heat in summer can be a problem. Love yr Sat night vidios. Thank you.
love your greenhouse Ben , 2 years ago i invested in a rhino greenhouse in sage green with finials an indulgence but i love it as it not only looks beautiful but is solid and practical and yes automatic vents is a must , now this may sound daft but i had lots of seedlings in trays in march which i had started in the house so into the greenhouse they went i covered them in thick fleece at night and inbetween them i put rubber hot water bottles i never lost a plant lol kisses to rosie xx
I love Ben's greenhouse too. It's such a calming cozy creative place, giving off the best of vibes. Love the nature backdrop visuals through the glass too. Hope he never changes it in a major dramatic way during any repairs.
It’s early winter here. Have a Yardestry. Impressive. We could have 40’s outside and it’s 80’s inside. 50’s and it’s high 90’s inside. Heater system at night to keep 50’s. Definitely think about multiple ceiling vents (I have one) and a fan to suck out heat. If you want to use for winter greens that has to be understood too.
Thank you so much for these tips! I was interested in a lean to style, on end of garage, real sunny, out of the wind. I am glad you mentioned it. Love your videos and we all have learned so much! God bless you. 💖
I would ask them to prune it. In law, you are entitled to the "rights and privileges" of ownership. If your neighbour is denying your ability to enjoy those priviliges, they might find a court orders them to cut it down
I've got wind and solar power so I'm looking to set up heating, I've also found hackable motorised window openers and I intend to combine with a Raspberry Pi Zero to control the temperature up and down as well as a fan for air movement combined with weather predictions for times when it would actually be best to retain some of the heat. Would not be able to justify heating without renewables. We haven't actually had the greenhouse installed yet, we're currently using what is effectively a clear tent as we wanted to give it more time to figure out what we want exactly, we've gone for a very big greenhouse, we're starting all of our seeds and we have a 2 acre field to grow in, so we need a lot of space and for both of us to use it at the same time
Was looking for a greenhouse a few years ago but the Mrs had her way and we ended up with a sauna instead. Which is nice but it is hardly being used. Still I haven't given up and perhaps have more success in the (near) future. Thanks for the information on it all and I will try to get a hold of your book!
Yep. Thinking about a small greenhouse. I have an old garage that is falling down. Might repurpose the wood. Has nice redwood siding. Have to come up with a plan and location for this winters project. Thanks for the video, it gave me things to think about in zone 6b.
Thanks Ben. A very timely video for me as I'm about to buy a 3m x 8m polytunnel. I wanted a gravel/patio slab base but I've decided to use pallets instead as these will be more convenient to transport, and cheaper.
Planing to build a greenhouse with old windows. Thanks for all the information, it will be very handy in the near further. Thanks Ben, again for a very helpful video, keep them coming.
Very good info! I believe you hit all the marks. I’m hoping to get a remodel on my lean-to GH. It needs new polycarbonate panels and will add a heat sink to the floor with tile over that. I do use a small heater for seedlings in spring as they would freeze at night. Wish I had a brick wall on garden shed-suppose I could create one as it is possible. I was thinking of all kinds of ways to collect heat off the back wall. I thought of a cold frame out the front that could catch heat and be piped into the floor, but then I think of heavy snow that would land on it from the roof. Everything I try to do here is a struggle. It’s just like trying to design a welcoming front yard when the front of the house faces the back and all the utilities to deal with🙄 I would like to hear more on ways to efficiently heat greenhouses. Thx Ben!
Ah I’ve made the right decision! Thankfully I thought of most of these things prior to ordering mine 2 weeks ago! Just a tip for anyone looking to get one. Order now while they’re on offer! And I can’t contain my excitement for this bit of news, my broad beans and garlic have shot up out of the ground! I’ve got that exciting spring feeling already 😅
We’ve just finished laying a flagstone base and the new greenhouse is in the garage ready for us to build on a good day! We opted for a 6x8 rhino greenhouse
I currently have an 8x6' greenhouse at home & a 20x10' polytunnel on a small allotment. I'm at the planning stage for a self build bungalow & the plot is large enough to include a 20x10' greenhouse. I'm going for aluminium, probably powder coated, set on a dwarf wall & toughened glass. I'll put heating in, as the house will be getting vertical ground source heating & & that will have spare capacity.
I have made a vow that our next house will have a greenhouse! We don't have space for one in our current garden, but it's a huge consideration for when we next move.
We just completed our first year with a homemade poly tunnel, 10’x20’. It has lots of ventilation options and we use multiple large fans. However, even with 40% shade cloth in the summer it gets too hot inside. I learned to grow Parthenocarpic varieties of tomatoes and cucumbers for better pollination.
My sister has a greenhouse but the top polythene cover was blown off by the wind. So now she needs to figure out how best to keep it intact. I really enjoyed listening to your ideas. Thanks
Thanks for another great video, Ben! I have a greenhouse adjacent question for all you kind and knowledgeable Grow Veg fans: namely, when you *don't* have a greenhouse or coldframe, what do you do with perennial seedlings in November that are still too small to plant out? Are they just toast? 😢 I made the overzealous newbie mistake of planting an autumn plug tray of lupine, delphinium, foxglove, and cornflower about 6 weeks ago, and it's just started getting cold and a bit frosty in the a.m. here in Zone 8a Germany. I'm potting them on into individual pots and praying I can save them somehow. The Internet hasn't been helpful, maybe I'm the only one foolish enough to have done this. Or perhaps Ben's latest video is my answer. 😂
If you can just move them to a relatively sheltered position and perhaps throw over a fleece or similar cold protection when it gets really, really cold, that should help. :-)
I have always wanted a green house but they are expensive. There seems to always be a more important project that needs attention ie the house roof, or the car… Love your videos ❤
Just grabbed an end of season bargain here in France €240 for a small polycarbonate aluminium framed one. I don't mind if I only get a few years out of it because we've only just moved here and we have a house to furnish. Priorities eh?
So happy that you made this video. I have a 6ft by 6 ft polycarbonate one that I just build after having last year a cheap lidl one. Still with a lot of doubts of how to use that on my tiny garden and with the hard winters of my 7a area. Right now I just have a handmae bench and some of the gear for the garden. By the way, those someone know if you can use the email from the support for garden planning and organisation doubts? I had last year and interesting testing year and I can see the potential the garden has, but with the new greenhouse, I am unsure I am making the best out of it. Thanks like always Ben, I have gone from a newbie to growing a lot of food in less than a year thanks to your guiding, book and app.
I’ve been wanting a greenhouse for years. I’m thinking of building one out of cattle fencing and greenhouse plastic and wooden ends for doorways. This will make a tube.
I'm buying a greenhouse in the spring, but I'm going for polycarbonate as I live in a windy area in Cornwall. I'm testing out the area first with a smaller plastic greenhouse to see if it survives the winter in that spot. A neighbour lost a new polytunnel last year in the wind, but he may have needed to put it right against the Cornish stone hedge for protection against the wind. I'm going for polycarbonate as I have a dog running round and there are horses in the field next door. I wouldn't want any glass to shatter and blow onto the ground around the field gate. Thank you for the video. It was very useful.
Good Greenhouse tips. I live in a particularly windy area, so I decided to build my own one from scrap wood and pallets, that way I know how to strengthen it , it can be easily repaired and resized if I need to. So far it cost me about £30 on to build. I just need to glaze it now.
0mg yes i love this Vvlog i had two greenhouses with the green tarp over them but with weather bad both blow off and all I got left with is a frame........ so I am on th elook out for a solid maybe glas greenhouse........... been looking on Amazon have see a few.............. but actually I want one just like yours lol somewhere where I can also work with my my plants and seedling...I also have a lot of bricks in my garden which I think I could use to make a foundation wall or something...
Would love a proper greenhouse but my luck with them is rubbish , I lost a 6x4 polycarbonate to the wind it was fastened to the concrete base but folded like a pack of cards lol , I only use plastic wilko greenhouses or polytunnels now which means I put them up at easter and take them down end of September, I even lost a polytunnel over my garden fence in June, crazy but I think I'm mentally scarred Ben lol 👍
I've wanted a greenhouse for sometime now, but sadly can't afford one. I'll be looking into making one from whatever I can get. This video is by far the best I've seen. If you can do a video on DIY greenhouses that would be great! Thanks 👍
I'd love one but getting the base prepared is partly what puts me off as you need to find someone to do it, never easy where I am, plus it adds to the already high cost. I'm on the coast too so worried about the wind. I'd really like a polycrub but they make greenhouses look cheap 😂 Thanks fot the vid, really good summary.
As I have no clue whatsoever and greenhouses are quite expensive here (Switzerland), I ordered a poly-tunnel. Quite cheap - yeah the plastic coat around it will not be of great quality but I found several places to order separate plastic coats on their own. :-) It will have 7m2. The place it will be is semi-shaded (some hours it has full sun, in the evening shade. I hope this is fine and will work out. :-D
Thank you, The Farmer from Shaun the Sheep. I think I saw Blitzer in the background in one of the shots. This was a well thought out and concise yet comprehensive video, I appreciate it and all your channel very much. Thanks. fwiw I personally plan to go with polycarbonate, high walls (dogs), Mr. Al Lough MANY Um done by yours truly. And I like the idea of those wax piston auto openers. Best Regards from USA.
I have a 6 ft. x 8 ft. greenhouse I finished building this year. I haven't used it yet. I do have a potting bench and some shelving in it. It has two roof vents, but still gets too hot.
The greenhouse is quite theoretical still, but it'll be either 8' or 12'x32' attaching to the chicken coop. Posts will be 4"x6", the roof hasn't been decided on, but probably 2"x6" cathedral. The chickens will have access. The floor will be wood chips. It could be tied in to the boiler to stretch the fall season for tomatoes e.g. and getting plants ready for the garden that need an early start in zone 4a on the cusp of 3b.
I'd love to have a greenhouse, but I fear it would get in the way of my actual garden ... the best place for a greenhouse is where the raised beds are now. I'm jealous of your greenhouse (and whole set up), Ben! Did you build it yourself? It looks like it's in the perfect spot.
Hi Ben I am going to buy a greenhouse Early next year .6/10 feet glass .in your video you mention getting concrete or slabs which one is better.i watch all your gardening videos always good information.
I live on the Isle of Wight. I am surrounded on three sides by fields, two of which face south and west. I bought a big reinforced plastic polytunnel the week before we had 100mph winds. Ground anchors ripped out and dismantled it, ripping the plastic and annihilating the frame. So I bought 4 railway sleepers and a 700 quid metal greenhouse with polycarbonate panels, screwing the frame to the sleepers. Pleased as punch, I planted it up. It lasted until the next windstorm (about 4 months), the frame still attached but bent almost horizontal and the panels flew down the garden and barricaded the back door. Now considering repurposing what's left and fashioning a lean-to growhouse to attach to the back of the house.
I managed to get a greenhouse from my neighbour really cheap as she was chucking it away. I have to put chicken wire over the windows and fix a door panel with chicken wire, which I can easily remove, over the entrance to stop the birds getting in and pecking my tomatoes etc. inside during the summer. I have a small “raised bed” in the greenhouse and I’m now trying to get rid of the mice/rats that keep digging underneath the greenhouse and robbing me of my winter growing veg. But I wouldn’t do without a greenhouse now.
Another way of heating a greenhouse is to have a large black plastic trash can around 40 to 50 gallons. Fill it up with water. When the temperature goes down, the heat from the water will heat the greenhouse. You may need more than one. Depends on the size of the greenhouse.
Check out the Mittleider Method. Soil based hydroponics so soil doesn't really matter. This year I grew in unimproved clay soil that just had the Bermuda ripped (mostly) out of it. I started seedlings in 100F+ heat and harvested over 10lbs of cucumbers in one week from less than 10 plants.
I would look to gradually improve the soil with lots of organic matter - leaves, manure, compost. Lots of this you can often source for free if you are willing to collect. Many root crops like carrots will grow in sandier soils though.
I can't find the link for your book. But I live in NZ, would I still be eligible? I'm hoping to buy property next year and my plan for my greenhouse, is to make it from leadlight windows. Although these can be expensive, I hope to slowly buy them and make the glasshouse either myself, or get a local handyman. (As a single woman, I have previously done wallpapering, paint, tile and flooring in my previous house. A glasshouse would be my first) Love your videos and thank you for this one, great info I needed ❤️ 😊
The abridged book is available as a download in any country - just use the link in the video description, or contact our customer service staff using the Live Chat on GrowVeg.com and we'll help you find it. Good luck with your new property and greenhouse!
I have 2 greenhouses at the bottom of my garden, sadly this year I did not get a chance to put in over-wintering crops, with the ground inside being empty should I keep it watered so the soil does not completely dry out ? Thank you in advance - Darren from Medway in Kent.
You could do that, yes. I would also consider covering the soil with some organic matter - compost or manure - to keep it 'alive' and the soil life within it active.
I wish! I could only dream of being able to afford any kind of greenhouse. Then, even if I could afford one, I wouldn’t be able to afford to install a base/flooring. I tried a plastic one and that was a disaster!
I'd do your best to keep it below about 100F / 37C as best as you can, opening all doors and windows for pretty much all growing season long to keep the air flow. You don't need to keep it above freezing unless you are growing tender crops.
i really want to see you Re-Build your Greenhouse 👍😂❤ Maybe add another top floor so you can separate and Reach by Ladder like in Library/ Everyday Store with High Shelfs 😂
It depends what you are growing. I don’t hear mine but because it is still a few degrees warmer in winter/spring it means I can enjoy a few weeks head start.
Polytunnels are great too. They don't trap as much warmth at night, but raise temperatures during the day significantly. They'd also protect against cold winds, so they do have an overall growth-enhancing effect.
Bless you Ben, thank you 💚 I already got my first-ever greenhouse 8x6 (I'm very keen but very amateur gardener) and I'm still learning around on how to maximise and use it properly LOL and so far it has been fun but very slow learning curve. I love your channel soooo much. 🥰 💚💚💚x

@GrowVeg Thank you so much for responding 🙂
I have always wanted a green house but they are expensive. There seems to always be a more important project that needs attention ie the house roof, or the car…
Love your videos ❤
Just grabbed an end of season bargain here in France €240 for a small polycarbonate aluminium framed one. I don't mind if I only get a few years out of it because we've only just moved here and we have a house to furnish. Priorities eh?
Great ideas
So pleased you're getting so much value from the videos etc. Really appreciate your support. :-)
Oh dear - that must have been a scarring experience! Glad you've got a system in place now to avoid the winter storms.
@@GrowVeg hopefully Ben 👍
Just had an 8x12 aluminium greenhouse put up on a concrete base the old shed was on. Now I need to decide on staging etc. Exciting times ahead.
Make your own staging. Very easy to do
Like others here, I built my own out of windows and timber I found around the neighbourhood. Surprised he didn't mention that option!
I've wanted a greenhouse for sometime now, but sadly can't afford one. I'll be looking into making one from whatever I can get. This video is by far the best I've seen. If you can do a video on DIY greenhouses that would be great! Thanks 👍
Thanks for the suggestion - will definitely consider this for a future video. :-)
Sounds like a great thing to invest in - polytunnels can make a big difference. :-)
A large vessel of water or two can also help greenhouses maintain a more constant warm temperature.
What do you do with all the vegetables you grow? How much of them do you sell and how much do you use to cook or preserve? Great videos!
My family eats all the vegetables grown. I try to preserve some, but usually it all gets eaten in good time, so this isn't generally necessary!
I have been window shopping a bigger greenhouse for 2 years. I’m getting one this year!
Didn't know Harry Hill had a Greenhouse.
Thanks so much for watching. Glad you found this one useful. :-)
I have a 6 ft. x 8 ft. greenhouse I finished building this year. I haven't used it yet. I do have a potting bench and some shelving in it. It has two roof vents, but still gets too hot.
You can always take out a pane or two of glass in a greenhouse if it doesn't have side vents for better ventilation.
I didn't build the greenhouse - it was here when we moved here several years ago. We're very lucky to have it! :-)
Hi Ben I am going to buy a greenhouse
Early next year .6/10 feet glass
.in your video you mention getting concrete or slabs which one is better.i watch all your gardening videos always good information.
I would say a concrete skirt that matches the footprint of the greenhouse might be the sturdiest option.
I am saving up for a Greenhouse & hoping to purchase it next year
Hope you get to enjoy it next year. :-)
@@GrowVeg Thank You ☺️
Just had my Rhino 8x10 delivered. Dreading putting it up tho. Also not the best timing as having hand operated on in a weeks time.
Hi! Thank you. But what about the greenhouse made from polycarbonate pannels?
They are often more cost effective and can be a safer bet with children around. But they won't retain heat as effectively as glass.
Mines in need of repair few broken pieces of glass best way to cut glass any one? Or what to use as a replacement?
Not sure how you'd cut glass, though I know there are various videos on it. I'd probably just get them pre-cut personally.
So sorry to read this - how frustrating! I hope you come up with a wind-proof solution for the new growhouse.
Couldnt afford a proper greenhouse so bought a 6 by 9ft pollytunnel ready to put up in spring
Very interesting and comprehensive. If only they weren't so expensive! Mine is the 50 euros from Lidl variety 😂
Fantastic idea. :-)
another upgrade - cover whole greenhouse with insulating fabric during night, so less heat run out during winter.
Question, I do not have the money to buy soil and my yard is nothing but sand. What can I grow in sand?
A glasshouse would be my first)
Love your videos and thank you for this one, great info I needed ❤️ 😊
The abridged book is available as a download in any country - just use the link in the video description, or contact our customer service staff using the Live Chat on GrowVeg.com and we'll help you find it. Good luck with your new property and greenhouse!
I just finished building mine, it is 12' x 8'6". Can I upload a couple of pics on the garden planner website?
Unfortunately you can't upload pics to the Garden Planner website. But you can add photos to the free Garden Journal: www.growveg.com/journal.aspx
@GrowVeg sorry to hear that, I really wanted to show off my greenhouse to you. 😇
You avoid mentioning the cleaning of the Roof Glass? Any tips?
Try a motorhome dealer. Seriously. They have brushes on a pole that connect to a hosepipe.
Great suggestion!
I just got my 10 x 12 greenhouse. What temperature should I aim for inside it? It heats up very quickly!
I'd do your best to keep it below about 100F / 37C as best as you can, opening all doors and windows for pretty much all growing season long to keep the air flow. You don't need to keep it above freezing unless you are growing tender crops.
i really want to see you Re-Build your Greenhouse 👍😂❤
Maybe add another top floor so you can separate and Reach by Ladder like in Library/ Everyday Store with High Shelfs 😂
Sounds like a fab idea! :-)
@GrowVeg i dont waste my breath , im looking forward to see your " BUSHCRAFT " SKILLS 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
I would love a greenhouse. However, my garden is only 35ft by 20ft with a cement patio in the middle. There just isn’t room. 😢
I seen the goedisc green houses on RUclips, what u think about them.
What temperature is ideal for a greenhouse?
It depends what you are growing. I don’t hear mine but because it is still a few degrees warmer in winter/spring it means I can enjoy a few weeks head start.
How would a polytunnel compare?
Polytunnels are great too. They don't trap as much warmth at night, but raise temperatures during the day significantly. They'd also protect against cold winds, so they do have an overall growth-enhancing effect.
Bless you Ben, thank you 💚 I already got my first-ever greenhouse 8x6 (I'm very keen but very amateur gardener) and I'm still learning around on how to maximise and use it properly LOL and so far it has been fun but very slow learning curve. I love your channel soooo much. 🥰 💚💚💚x
As long as you're enjoying it - that's the main thing! :-)
@@GrowVeg Thank you so much for the response lovely Ben, it means a lot 🥰 You are a great inspiration to all of us and once again, thank you for all your efforts in sharing and gifting us your knowledge in gardening and your always punchy humours. Have a pleasant weekend🙂💚. xx
