Bowie said of this song: What’s your favorite song you ever wrote and is there a particular reason it’s the favorite? Sheesh! Right now I would say the song “Heathen.” It came pouring out one morning at the studio up in Woodstock. I had little or no control over it. It had me in tears as I sang it. It felt like it was being plucked from my very being. An epiphany of sorts. It seems to be a summation of some kind and I think will become a personal milestone of some sort to me. It contains for me a strong indication of how beautiful and wonderful life is and how I regret that I will have to relinquish my hold upon it. I could only have written it at my present age.
He definitely is very emotional about this song. I've seen a video of him performing it on stage and he had to fight really hard not to cry as he sang it. His voice was cracking as he got towards the end. I've never seen him emotional like that when singing a song on stage (unfortunately though video only...I never got to see him live for real... )
Isaac Hidalgo yes, I believe it was live in Berlin in 2002. Also if you watch him perform it in Paris he looked ever so upset, I don't think i have ever seen him in the state he was in during that performance
@@gemmavalentine8073 its the notion his best days are behind him, even if he was someone who never thought about his mortality that much. ie the way he lived his life was finding things to make the time pass, and he sure did that
Just listening to this for first time im a minute in its amazing. Rip david.been mourning this man since he died. Went to bed after scouring internet and watching blackstAr video. Before i slept i asked i meet him in my dream s and you k ow i dreamt about him all night and was running around belfast going to parties with him and we were good friends is was unreal and seemed to last all night it was dream about bowie on demand and he was standing next to me. Thanks david
I can't remember why I listened to the album rarely when it came out. I even clearly thought this album cannot be one of my favorites. But now, I love to listen to this album so much, so many times. Especially, this song is amazingly beautiful.
Bowie and Prince gone with in 3 months - what a blow .... reminds me of the year 1970 when Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison died with in 9 months, or 1980 when Lennon, Bon Scott and John Bonham died with in a few months ... this song makes me so sentimental
Steel on the skyline Sky made of glass Made for a real world All things must pass Oo-o Waiting for something Looking for someone Is there no reason? Have I stared too long? Oo-o Oo-o You say you'll leave me And when the sun is low And the rays high I can see it now I can feel it die Oo-o Oo-o
The line "All things must pass" must be a Harrison refence. On his next album, "Reality", released in 2003, two years after Harrison had passed, Bowie even covered a complete Harrisong, "Try Some, Bye Some".
love the build up, its not how you start, but how you finish, how will you finish David ? we are made for eternity .............................its a long time
"Heathen" Steel on the skyline Sky made of glass Made for a real world All things must pass Oo-o Waiting for something Looking for someone Is there no reason? Have I stared too long? That Ronson-esque guitar riff, so sad. Controversial opinion maybe, but I feel that this song was more of a goodbye to his fans than anything on Blackstar.
He said in a 2002 interview with the BBC that this song is about realizing that life is finite and that his death was imminent. He didn't meant to write the song about that, but the lyrics just came pouring out of him, and he was in tears by the time he finished writing it, so he says.
On the album there are several tracks which, arguably, address the artist's relationship with a deity: 'I would Be Your Slave', '5:15 The Angels Have Gone', 'A Better Future', 'Heathen'. A clue is also in the album's title. Bowie asks, almost demands even, to know the answers to some fundamental questions, the reason 'why?', what is everything for? I don't think he expects to get any answers, but he needs to pose those questions. Ultimately, most artists will ask "what does it mean to you?" (Andy Warhol), so this is as far as you can go without nailing things down.
WOW to think of Ziggy Stardust and how his rays of sun-beam burn bright into the deep sea of navy night, breathing in ryhtem, in order to induce trance, intoxication birthing dance, free as beasts, alive as man.

Did he really say that?
I mean its a great song so i can kind of understand it but this is from 2002 and how long before that was he at Woodstock?
He wrote Heathen in 2001 at a recording studio in Woodstock, New York (not referring to the Woodstock Festival).
Would love to know where this was from - Was this from an interview - article?
MrsEasyEd's comment is correct below. Bowie purchased acreage in upper State NY - Woodstock, and he and his family spent lots of time there.

If anyone's ever seen one of the live performances of this, that is probably the most choked-up and emotional I've ever heard him.

What a really beautiful picture!
I can imagine this played with the Blackstar backing band and it would've fit perfectly.
All things must pass. Oh-oh-oh.
I love the part when he says he can see it now and that he can feel it die. It's just deep on so many levels.💕
BEAUTIFUL ✴💔
Surely my favorite Bowie album, right along with Black Tie White Noise.

Once a hippie, always a hippie. I say that with respect.
+Don Carlson He was adamant that he rejected hippie culture, fashion and music. He was a mod.
Seriously? He's so not a hippie. He was quick to say, "I was a mod."
My funeral song.
agreed.
I love you so much and I can't wait to see you. all my lobe Erica
Someone should put the lyrics here. Thanks in advance to the person that does. :)
Lieblingssänger
That Ronson-esque guitar riff, so sad. Controversial opinion maybe, but I feel that this song was more of a goodbye to his fans than anything on Blackstar.
The only explanation is that HE TRULY BELIEVED IN WHAT HE WAS SINGING ABOUT.

3 min 36 is why I liked it
أعاني من الخوف والقلق
La música de Bowie , nunca me llamó la atención . Sin embargo , éste álbum , heathen , creo que es una obra de arte .
Whats the meaning of this song? Why is named Heathen? I love this song! I wanna know...
Only Bowie knew what it meant to him. Only you know what it means to you.
