As a white American I agree with you that, especially in america, more people like this man need to be shared and discussed. It’s a huge lack of context for all kids in school that would greatly benefit from reading about these people instead only hearing about how a group of people were submitted by force to do slave labor for hindered a of years. As an American and understanding that black people have almost single handed built this country to what it is now financially due to their free non paid labor and more people like this man should be thoroughly discussed if I have to learn about Joan of Arc

In this case, I think is important to note that indigenous people in the region also recognised Bayano as either an ally or their liege. Originally, most of Bayano’s followers were single men and there very few available women, which meant that many black men in pre-independent Panamá married indigenous women to further the control of their respectives palenques.

Interesting I have never heard of this figure he kind of reminds me of Gasper Yanga, its a shame their stories remain untouched. You are totally right we need to learn more about them and highlight their legacy and achievements. A film or TV series about King Bayano would be awesome. Btw it's been announced 50 Cent is working on a Queen Nzinga TV show with Stars, I was so surprised to hear the announcement he usually just invests in crime drama and stuff. He explained what we have been saying for years the continent (and ofcourse the Diaspora as you have highlighted) is full of stories and figures that's have awesome legacies waiting to be told I'm looking forward to it, I just hope Angolans are involved in this project.
Edit: I'd love to discuss and reply but youtube is hiding my replies. In response to Alkebulan Shujaa Ogun, there are two Shaka Zulu TV series in the works too. I feel these are just the beginning eventually we will get films and TV shows about male figures like King Taharqa and Piye as well as Mansa Sundiata and Mansa Musa , if the first few about queens so be it, its no big deal.

besides the courage and combat skills i'm sure he also was up there spiritually if you know what i mean. The way they captured him and let him live in comfort is a bit off. Sounds like spiritual domination.

Do a video of Dominica's armed Maroons who populated the mountains for upwards of 40 years, creating wholesocieties often spanning miles with the island's interior. They waged many wars against the British and there are many heros amongst them. Men like Balla and Jacko were power figures in this time. When governor Ainslie put a bounty of $1000 on Maroon leader Quashie, Quashie responded by doubling the price for Ainslie' head. In addition the messenger sent to pass the message to the Maroon's camp was tried and killed, his heart torn and stuck at a pick in the entrance of camp. The Commonwealth of Dominica has a long bloody history of victory and loss, very unknown and lost to the world. Check it out

Yah man. That is my country. Little does anyone know that these maroon trials, some of the bloodiest in slave history, contributed immensely to the abolition of slavery, catching the eye of William Wilberforce and other abolitionists. Our culture is founded upon these African maroons, who left with us the knowledge of spirit of rebellion.

Here in Dominica we are less known, only a few brave historians have shed some light on our Negre Mawon(Escaped slaves). Lennox Honeychurch and Thomson Fontaine are the ones to look for information

I am not surprised popular culture has not touched on such leaders. They do not want us to know about the ones who fought back. They want our people to forget that at least a few times despite the odds. That despite military technological disadvantage. Their were at least a few times we defeated the oppressors.

You are aware that the people who subjugated and took the slaves were other Africans aren't you? Europeans were basically restricted to the coast of Africa by the geography of it's water ways at that time.if they fought back against their oppressors they were fighting other tribal groups with similar military technologies😐 Europeans were at worst their best customers

There were 3 main ports for sending slaves to the West. 2 of these ports were in Muslim areas of Africa.
The reality is that most black Americans have Muslim backgrounds who were forcibly converted and enslaved.
