The world of track and field is full of amazing surprises… And if there is one incredible moment in the recent time that came as a surprise to the track and field community, then I must say, it is the recent record-breaking performance we witnessed at the 2024 Paris Diamond League. See, for over three decades the women’s high jump world record of 2.09 meters has been standing strong with no athlete managing to come closer. This world record was set way back on August 30th, 1987 by Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova, and ever since, many female athletes have tried their best to conquer this height, but the closest anyone came was Blanca Vlasic in 2009, with a jump of 2.08 meters. Indeed, Kostadinova’s record seemed destined to last another decade, or even longer. But this year, just a couple of weeks before the prestigious 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, something incredible just happened unexpectedly and the whole field community was left in shock.

Congratulations to Mahuchikh, but why this deluge of rhetorics in this video, I wonder. That Mahuchikh was the prime candidate to break the record - and not "in a decade" obviously - was admitted. Sports reporting seems not to be able to do without grand words and the epic register. Come on, this is just a high jump, not a flight to Mars or the next world war.
