  • I think the look of aluminum is really nice, and would like like to incorporate it in more of my metalworking and woodworking projects. In this video I will show you how to take apart a stereo player, aka how to get THICK aluminum plate or sheet for free from a heatsink!

You can find these big heatsinks in many different types of electronic devices and appliances, desktop computers, televisions, stereo players, and more! Now you can polish your aluminum sheet, mill your aluminum plate for DIY projects, melt cast aluminum heatsinks into other projects, or anything else! Just remember to never use aluminum on a bench grinder :)

Do you have all of the accessories for the rotary tool? Cutoff wheels, sanding spindles, cloth polishing wheels, etc? It'll save you a bunch of time! :)

Yonatan24 yeah it was a 106 piece kit. 30 cut off wheels(double them up and last longer and are stronger) and i used like 4 already and a lot of pink sander things(idk name) and sanding wheels pilot hole drill bits etc

I don't like doubling them up because they require more force and it makes the rotary tool heat up more and turn slower. I don't think doubling them up makes them last longer, but they do break less.
If I know what you're referring to, those pink ones are grinding stones for metal, and the sanding wheels are called spindles, they work really well even on hard wood.

It's a stereo player. I see these thrown outside on the curb every once in a while. Maybe ask friends if they know anyone who has an old one they don't need.

I doubt they're worth much, but I'm not opposed to reusing.

It depends on the alloy grade of aluminum. Some are completely worthless as their metallurgy grade make them impossible to recycle. Some aluminum quite valuable to recycle. You have to understand the different aluminum alloys and metal treatments. Aluminum with certain anodize treatments cannot be recycled as they will self contaminate on melting making their next casting highly brittle.

How are the different grades and alloys sorted?

@@Yonatan24 by taking lab style samples, big recycling facilities either have a database or when they get a big batch of something the sample it. You can't determine the mixture by normal means (eye, heat, maleability...)
