    Excellent - this is one of my favourite cab rides. I like your driving style - none of this namby-pamby crawling into platforms at 20mph! I’ve often observed that approaching platforms quicker allows for a smoother stop, rather than coasting along the platform and then throwing on full service at the end.

    I was a signalman at Hayes back in 1970. Went onto Twickenham West Junction Box, where i ended my time on the railway.

      Hayes obviously subsumed into London Bridge around 1975
      Twickenham likewise incorporated into Feltham
      Both L and F both now gone, taken over by ROCs. It’s kinda sad, I do like to visit an old box when route learning

    A great video and very enjoyable. I grew up in Sidcup in the 1950's when green 4EPB's ruled the roost and journeys to Charing Cross were always a treat for a train mad boy. Captions with the station names are a very helpful feature. Many thanks.

    This video brings back memories of my childhood when I used to travel from Hayes to Charing Cross on the route 24. Route 25 I believe was Cannon Street. It was the green EPB's in those days back in the late '50's and 60's. I was surprised that they were still running at the beginning of the '90's. In those early days I can remember that Clock House Station was prone to flooding. Great video and I really have enjoyed it particularly this one. The Networker trains seem so much faster.

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  6 месяцев назад

      EPBs finished in 1995, with the Networkers starting to come in a couple of years earlier
      The Networkers are quicker, but I still think I prefer the EPBs!

    I liked that one a lot, thank you! I used to live near Clock House, so I had to stop myself pausing the video and getting up from my chair when we arrived!
    Thank you for the station names, they help my aged memory.
    A few little details that caught my eye:
    .The little stumps of platform at Spa Road outside London Bridge
    .The remains of Platform 4 at Elmers End, harks back to another time with the branch line down to Addiscombe, etc. Now it's just a very wide platform 3.
    .The NSE colours and branding at Cannon Street
    .When London Bridge was functional but ugly

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 года назад +3

      All absolutely valid points! Things have changed a lot very quickly! Elmers End had bay platforms both sides at one point. The downside was for Hayes, but very seldom used to decades out of use. The upside was the Addiscombe shuttle but that, of course, gave way to Tramlink after 1997

    I would have to say that the approach into London Bridge has to be one of the most dramatic approaches into central London on a train, as the City of London skyline with its impressive buildings begins to close in on you fast, along with the Shard right out in front as well.

    What an awful grind of rails outside of cannon Street and lewisham - it must drive the locals nuts! I wonder if there is an ammeter in the cab so you can avoid the motors from being burnt out from too much current especially when you really floored it after London bridge? Did you ever accidentally forget to stop at a station on route?

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  2 года назад +2

      I never forgot to stop anywhere, but I always checked when stopped what my next stop was. There is no ammeter in modern units, as electronics control the power output to make sure you don’t overload anything

    Pray tell, what do engineers call that slip diamond crossing if you will that our train plies at 1:12:08? Are its rails manœuvred so as to be less noisy when traveled over than if they were merely static, or is either space or the angle of attack too tight? Does such a dynamic diamond ever get its own signal?

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  7 лет назад

      trainrover Switch diamonds. Yes, they manoeuvre according to the route set, this being with the main signal (no need for its own). Allows a smoother ride over the diamond

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  Год назад

      When the London Bridge rebuild was taking place around 2016. With the Thameslink lines down the middle, the crossover was removed so they were not impeded. Blue Anchor junction was a bottleneck with TL trains crossing on the level. Now they’ve have a dedicated flyover, so equally there are not scheduled moves between the CHX and CST sides approaching LBG

      Was evening rush hour. At London Bridge southbound, listening to the station announcement I think it was a bit after 5 pm. Service would have been pretty much entirely homeward bound commuters alighting en route and absolutely no-one .interested in going back into London. Some leavers were obviously saying thanks at New Beckenham as they passed the driver on their way out beyond the fence.

      Each station on the line is used by between 800,000 and 2.5 million people per year. Hardly considered viable for closure.
