  • Description This is England The Clash
PUNK Rock England Bernard Rhodes Joe Strummer Clash culture Politics debate, Fashion plus lyrics:
I hear a gang fight on a human factory farm,
Are they howling out or doing somebody harm?
On a catwalk jungle some-body grabbed my arm.
Her voice spoke so cold it matched the weapon in her palm.
    This is England,
    This knife of Sheffield steel.
    This is England,
    This is how we feel.
Time on his hands, a freezing row of stones,
He won't go for the carrot,
They beat him by the pole,
Some sunny day con-fronted by his soul,
He's out at sea, so far off, he can't go home.
    This is England,
What I'm sup-posed to die for.
    This is England,
And we're never gonna cry no more.
    Black shadow of the Vincent,
    Falls on a Triumph line.
    I got my motorcycle jacket,
But I'm walking all the time.
    A South Atlantic wind blows,
    Ice from a dying creed.
    I see no glory,
    When will we be free?
    This is England,
We can chain you to a rail.
    This is England,
We can kill you in a jail.
The British boots go kick them,
    Got 'em in the head.
    Police ain't watchin'
    A newspaper's being read.
    Who dares to protest
E-nough to react like a flame?
    Out came the batons and,
    The British warn them-selves.
    This is England,
    This land of il-legal dances.
    This is England,
    Land of one thousand stances.
    This is England,
    This knife of Sheffield steel.
    This is England,
    This is how we feel.
    This is England,
    This is England.
    Repeat to fade

I find it interesting how Mick Jones tells a different story of how the band formed -- that he'd seen Joe Strummer sing in the 101er's and asked him to form a band without Bernie's involvement.
Either way, the record company really screwed The Clash.

Though this song sang about the woes of England,it stood out as the best song on the album..in fact it was the closest song to an actual Clash song on the record...after I bought Cut The Crap..it made me wish that the original members would somehow reunite,it wasn't to be unfortunately...BAD was good(No pun intended),Joe Strummer and the Mesculeros were good,..but the original Clash was great

      What is the song about?

    • @h1billy13
      @h1billy13 6 лет назад +5

The song is a state-of-the-nation address for Britain discussing the ills Joe Strummer sees around him - including the collapse of the British motorcycle production industry ("Black shadow of the Vincent falls on a Triumph line"), the harsh South Atlantic winter of 1984 that had seen many Britons die in freezing conditions ("South Atlantic wind blows, ice from a dying creed"), the wave of jingoistic patriotism that had accompanied Britain's victory in the Falklands War ("I see no glory, when will we be free"), and traditional old Clash themes of protest, police oppression and disillusionment ("Those British boots go kick Bengali in the head, police sit watchin', the newspapers been read, who cares to protest").
Its obvious if you listen to the song properly but if you only listen to the chorus which most people do the point goes straight over their heads

what's the song about? I don't get most of the lyric's references. I assume it's because I'm not English, or even British.

    • @Rabmcm32
      @Rabmcm32 7 лет назад +5

Well if I may proffer an interpretation. England is the land where ancient rights were spawned and recognised, for example as outlined in Magna Carta, where the idea that no man was above the law including the King and that trial in crime should be done by a jury of his peers etc. These values of freedom have been systematically abused leading to the Police state England we have today, which was well on the way when this song was written and performed. Many of the Clash's lyrics have the idea of Justice and injustice of the system - how it wasn't meant to be like this.

Joe, singing about working class brutality was hardly a member himself: public school boy with all the benefits a father in the foreign service had to offer. Apparently he was also a bit of sh*t, screwing some of his bandmates GFs, etc. Still, its a great song and many more to go with it - though i don't necessarily agree with most of john/joe's sentiments!
