Yes. He was having issues with his kidneys which stemmed from the diabetuhs. He was 85 though so he did at least have a full life.

Mr. Brimley lived in my hometown. My dad ran one of the local theaters and he did a play there once, and he sat in the hallway with me and talked to me for a long time about how college was going for me and what my plans for the future were. He was really a nice guy.

I know everyone makes jokes and stuff about him saying “diabeetus” but let’s be honest, who else has brought more awareness about the condition than him? Rest In Peace. Thank you for all the laughs and thank you for all the public service.
I don't think he helped with that at all. Adult-onset diabetes is a result primarily of a poor diet, so Wilford did zero service to the cause because he never informed anyone in a proper way in his TV ads how to prevent diabetes. He was just a corporate hack doing his apple pie and ice cream ads. He was clueless. Cultures which mostly observe a really good diet have a very low percentage of adult-onset diabetes.

I remember seeing this commercial on TV back in the 2000s/90s when I was young. Not only did that guy look exactly like my grandpa (same exact glasses and facial hair), but my grandpa would also pronounce diabetes as "diabeetus." I would always do my best to not crack up laughing whenever this commercial came on or when my grandpa said it.
