When to China for the first time, I had the same reaction. But I LOVED the texture. So I just kept eating it and gaging until I learned to NOT BREATH THROUGH MY NOSE while eating cutting it open and eating. We bought one the other day and put it on the freezer. When we cut it open, it was just like eating soft serve ice cream! So good!
As an indonesian myself, durian is 1 of my most favorite fruits i ever eat. The smells was kinda stingy at first, but when you get used to it, it wasnt that bad, and i like the creamy-ice cream like texture. Near my house, theres even a restaurant that served durian's flavor food only such as ice cream durian, durian smoothy, etc.
For people who eat Durian, it smells "fragrant". Can't explain it, brain just switched up at some point. The first time I heard someone say it smells bad, I thought they were crazy.
I strongly suspect that there's a cilantro-like genetics thing going on, where different people are truly tasting different things. I don't see any other good way to explain the huge differences in how people apparently perceive durian's smell and taste. (I'm in the "kinda like vanilla cream with caramelized onion and a hint of smelly cheese" group myself. Wouldn't say I love it, but I'll eat it from time to time.)

It's the king of fruits for a reason. And like a king it chooses who can enjoy its heavenly taste. That's why different people have different perception and reaction towards its smell, it's because the mixture of those numerous compounds.

In ASEAN definitely the best fruit for us. Even in Indonesia durian can turn into sweet food like ice cream, soup durian, and many more like dessert. Durian always been king of fruits
Observation: I'm not sure why but many people trying durian for the first time tend to smell it before eating it. Like you already know it's infamous for its smell. You don't have to smell it before eating. The key to tasting it properly is to just eat it without smelling it. And if you think it tastes like onions, it means you got a partially unripe durian. I always judge the taste of durian based on how soft and creamy the texture is. Crunchy = Unripe and probably disgusting for beginners. It's supposed to taste like creme brulee and the better tasting ones have an alcohol flavour to them too. Bitter durians pack a punch yet taste the best. Once you get used to the smell, they become more sweet. Usually the bad smell of durians are when you smell them from far away.
Your dad is amazing. The love you guys have is special, and you should never take him for granted. Make sure to appreciate all the time you have with him that you can. You are one lucky kid, man.
As a filipino i love durian, it is also a local fruit in one of the cities here in the Philippines and it's true that it is banned in hotel and taxi in other countries because even if you wrap the container fully with a tape where you put it's flesh with the seed of course, the smell of it will still come out 😂 and it's also very delicious when you make a durian shake drink from it 😊

For those who have never had it, i tell people to try it half way frozen for their first time (ice cream consistency). I feel like it helps reduce the pungency and also the sweetness comes thru better (like how refrigerated fruits seems sweeter). Thats the best chance or turning people ON to durian.
To anyone wondering, the smell is pungent. I personally dont find it to be a bad smell just really strong. The taste is something i could describe us a custard-y rum. It almost has a fermented taste to it. Some variants are sweeter while some are more bitter ❤
Legal question: if you force fed someone this as discipline, torture, or interrogation instead of physical harm, would it be classified as psychological torture and how would it be handled? Think in terms of kids misbehaving all the way to terrorist in Guantanamo.

Personally, I love Durian. When I was younger my Vietnamese uncle gave me some and then he and my other relatives started smiling cheekily expecting me to gag. They were shocked when I said I loved it. It's so expensive to buy but I eat it every chance I get. I even enjoy Durian flavoured food items. I think the scent is like a headily perfumed sweetness with a slight hint of garlic. Durian is basically like a sweet garlic custard. I love garlic too so maybe that's why I find durian rather pleasant.

For people who eat Durian, it smells "fragrant". Can't explain it, brain just switched up at some point. The first time I heard someone say it smells bad, I thought they were crazy.
True. I dont eat a lot of it, but to me, it smells good
I strongly suspect that there's a cilantro-like genetics thing going on, where different people are truly tasting different things. I don't see any other good way to explain the huge differences in how people apparently perceive durian's smell and taste.
