An animal that tries to kill its own mate almost every time seems so counterintuitive to survival
I think they evolved dumbly, like the female doesn't even realize that was her egg sac and thought she just molted from the inside or something.
Insects are built different. There’s plenty of males attracted to her scent, but she has to eat a lot before laying her eggs to ensure her kids have enough nutrition. It ends up being intuitive since there are so many individuals.

I once rescued a large female Mantis from a late October frost. I kept her warm and safe in a 10 gal fish tank. I fed her crickets that I bought from the pet store, and she about an inch larger under my protection. She layed 2 egg masses on the dried twigs that I placed in her terrarium. Not long after she laid her last egg case, she started to eat less and move ever so slowly. I knew her end time was near. I one day found her on the bottom of the terrarium, she was gone. Stangely I felt as if I had lost my pet dog. She lived 4 months past her natural prime 4 months longer than she would outdoors in the cold. Who knew, that I would ever make friends with an Insect😊

Actually cannibalism, both in nymphs and adult mantids typically only occurs in extreme cases of food scarcity rather than as a norm. It's a shame, because these simplifications always paint insects as tiny monsters rather than animals just trying to survive very hard. Even deers will eat their dead ones, no one's wasting any biomass in the wild.
Yeah the nymphs will not eat each other unless they’re on the brink of starvation… the babies probably won’t even eat for at least a day or two after hatching. The female eating the mate does happen but the frequency is very exaggerated
I watched a documentary about the praying mantis and it showed footage of the female going out of her way to snatch food during mating. She could have just turned around and ate him but grabbed something else instead. You guys are right. It really is sad how it’s exaggerated.

We had praying mantises in kindergarten for a class pet, 2 days after we got them the teacher had to explain cannibalism. My guess was they weren't fed enough or too much.

You would think, an animal containing "praying" would be a bit more tame. Instead, we have them commit crimes the second it gets out and at that point that name isn't just about the way it looks, after what they've done, they gotta pray they don't go to hell for it lmao. That was an adventurous video for sure!
Edit: I wasn't aware that people assume, if you make a joke regarding a name of an animal, because, praying mantis are called that because of the position they have their arms in, they would have to make sure you know, because one can't possibly make a joke and still be very well aware of the origin of the name.

They’re called that because of the way their arms are positioned, it looks like they’re praying! The word mantis comes from the Greek word of prophet so they’re kinda called praying prophet lol

@ I am aware, and I wouldn't mind that at all. I was more upset about the way the first commenter seemed to think I had to be unaware on why the insects has this name, just because I made a joke.
I love praying mantises. I used to keep them as pets. Would feed them flies and crickets and shit. I used to get them pretty big too.

do a Tiger shark one... the birthing period is very traumatic i watched it in documentary and it disturbed me soo much..
the babyshark eats it's sibling's embryo while it's in it's womb the oldest shark survives and literally born to hunt. there is no fittest survival there just luck if you were the earlier embryo you are lucky to not be eaten by your siblings.
