These guys make over six figures and it is a union job with a nice pension and health benefits. Had longshore in my family. 40% over 6 years, automation yes to make your job safe. You want more money I get it. However, you have to let automation do the dangerous job. With technology, it can be safer for everyone. There is a documentary about the ports in the US Versus the World... Night and day we are so far behind in technology in the workplace compared to several European nations, parts of Africa to several ports in Asia ( China, Japan, Indonesia, and many others) I was amazed at how fast they unload and load items in other countries compare to the 1 US market. I understand you asking for a raise but you have to let automation be part of the future as other countries will leave us in the dust in the Future. heck Mexico is spending Billions in investing on new port that can load and unload the new super cargo ships as the DALI and investing in a transportation system. it makes you wonder ????

So “it’s an extremely dangerous job” and they don’t want more automation?!? Automate the boring, the repetitive, the dangerous, then on the job injuries plummet, they can move 10 times the cargo with 1/10th the physical effort, decreasing the cost per ton of freight moved which then = REDUCED PRICES FOR ALL!

If it's such a dangerous job then why are you blocking the automation the rest of the world has adopted?! Unions want more money for themselves while they work slow a.f. and slow down the entire system workdwide, which costs consumers a lot more. Unions pass those increase wage costs onto consumers.
Automation = increased safety, fewer delays, and lower prices for consumers.

@@queenofcups1122 You're a liar. There's only 45,000 union workers, and automation will only cost 250 - 300 dock jobs per year. That's how civilization advances. Imagine if the lights go out. Then all that automation stops. Storms, power outages, solar flares. A complete automated system shutdown would be crazy! We know the guys and the women at the top gets the biggest bucks. A fair living wage and benefits for the important role these workers play should not be up for a debate.

The entry level salary is $83k with the average being $147k, and they get full benefits and pensions on top of that salary. Their salaries right now add thousands of dollars on each container, and all those costs are paid for by consumers. Plus, the tens of thousands of dollars in cost for all the delays since there isn't automation.
I process Waybills and Invoices all day. The amount Americans have to pay for goods shipped by containers is far more than Europe, Asia, Australia, South Africa, and South America. Americans are getting screwed because of greedy unions.

There's no reason they'd need higher wages, other than they spend their money too recklessly and desperately need more to survive. We need them in order to get goods and services, as well as medicines and household supplies in our stores, and these people are acting entirely selfish when they make such an absurd amount of money.
