🚨For clarity purpose🚨 : TS4 overall graphics obviously look better than TS2 simply because it is the most recent game.
However TS2 uses really detailed & complex technology for its time.
They did the best with what they had & it paid off considering how it beats TS4 in many graphic details, as shown in this video.
On the contrary it is blatant that TS4 doesn't take full advantages of the technologies availabe for todays games, especially considering it came out in 2014!

I think the chessboard thing is even more incredible (comparing it with TS4).
You can perfectly identify what each piece is, the Sims pick them up and move them individually, they're in the specific place where the sim left them. They don't disappear or teleport, the board doesn't change as if several pieces had been moved at the same time.

I think they'd have been better off with 5 starting traits, more variety in trait personalities, less focus on emotions, and Sims 2 style memories in Sims 4. By which I mean to say, memories would get recorded but not in a way that devours the game's memory (which is why those of us who played Sims 3 usually turned off memories entirely, only taking specific ones if we used the feature at all). Memories still exist in Sims 4, but it's basically a forgotten feature that hardly anyone seems to use. Anyway my point is, with more focus on who a character is and the life they've lived, a character seems more alive. Emotions are part of people, but people are not just walking emotions. People are made of their traits and experiences, and emotions follow those.

I actually think the CAS and Sims body shapes are best in Sims 4, but I miss how exaggerated you could make their features in Sims 2. Texture-wise, Sims 4 is seriously lacking, though at least some of that is intentional since it released almost ten years ago and was meant to run on low-end computers even then. I'm not a fan of the anime style hair, but I don't hate it as much as some others do.
I still play and enjoy Sims 4, but I also sometimes go back to both Sims 2 and 3 because they have other things to offer that they did better than the Sims 4. Sims 2 had the most attention to detail in its objects and animations. I remember being disappointed with Sims 3 compared to the Sims 2 when it first came out, but by the time several expansions had released, it had come into its own. Despite its flaws, I feel like Sims 4 is finally kind of getting to a point where it has some worthwhile gameplay. It's not as deep as Sims 2 or 3, but it can be enjoyed.

planar reflections were well known and established by 2004. It causes issues because you're literally rendering everything twice from different angles. The flat look was a style choice. They wanted cartoon/anime-looking Sims, and minimalist textures enabled the game to run on lower-end computers on release.
But some of the clothing is blurry, and some of it is extremely detailed in a way that looks odd with Sims who otherwise look more like cel-shaded cartoons.
Also, even the textures on child and up Sims look better than the food textures, the baby textures, the trash textures... So the lack in those areas is really egregious.

With Sims 4, some things have a higher polygon count and a higher resolution for textures, but other things have a weirdly low resolution and/or poly count (like the food and trash) and the overall style is intentionally minimalist. Sims 2 was exaggerated/cartoony, but generally more detailed.
One thing that struck me was that although some of the images you showed have a better poly count/seem smoother in Sims 4, the textures were often far worse, especially on smaller objects. Babies, for instance, seemed to have more polygons/smoother edges in Sims 4 than in Sims 2, but the textures used are terribly low-res. By contrast, the ceiling lights you showed seemed to have smoother edges in Sims 2, which is odd. And despite the Sims 2 plates having less jagged edges, they didn't have any further details. I did think the texture for water in Sims 4 looked better, even if the shaders and reflections weren't as detailed and well-done as in Sims 2.
Sims 2 was superior in terms of sheer level of detail. The animations were great, too. Sims had more detailed animations when performing actions such as cooking. Would love to see how some of its items, animations, and lighting effects compare to Sims 3 in a side-by-side, also.
I'd guess that part of the low detail on items and lighting in Sims 4 is because the team was for some reason not granted the manpower or budget to put that kind of detail in. That may be partly because the Sims 4 was originally conceived of as a fully online and possibly mobile or mobile hybrid game (which also explains a bit about the UI), and part of it was likely because the team didn't think details on smaller items would matter since they assumed players wouldn't be zooming in on them much. You can really tell that the Sims 2 team deeply cared about the details and how the game would be received. The Sims 1 had been a massive success, but there was no guarantee at that time that the Sims 2 would share that success. Then by the time the Sims 4 was worked on, it was created by a much smaller team mostly because all previous mainline Sims games had been successful. Sims 4 had no competition other than previous entries in the franchise, so it was more or less a guaranteed success no matter what the team did.
I actually play and enjoy the Sims 4, and I think now that it has some more content both in base game and expansions than it had on release, there are some things it does better than previous games. But I still find myself going back to Sims 2 and Sims 3 and my reasons tend to involve gameplay and detail more than nostalgia.
It concerns me that the developers have made it clear they intend to make the next Sims a mobile crossover. Even with a separate graphical environment on PC, it's still meant to be multiplayer and microtransactional, and will likely have toned-down graphics even on the PC version. Hopefully Paralives and Life By You will be competitive enough to force EA to do more than the bare minimum for their next Sims game and I'll be proven wrong. But as far as loyalty to the Sims? I don't really have any if someone else releases a superior product that does all or most of the same things.

I think that's basically what it is: an attempt to remake Sims 2, with some amount of the open world of Sims 3. But they somehow failed to capture the charm and gameplay depth of Sims 2 in the process. I still play it and enjoy it, and I think some of the expansions have given it more depth than it had at release. It's still weirdly shallow compared to Sims 2 or Sims 3, though, like it's more about how your digital Barbies look than how a digital person or family lives. It used to feel a bit more like the devs had a specific way you were "supposed" to play Sims 4, but more recent packs have felt to me like they might offer more options. Your mileage may vary on that though. And of course they did patch out the ability to do things like have a baby with the Grim Reaper, or have vampires actually be menacing and break into your home.

I agree, TS2 was the peak of The Sims games. But just a few notes as a bit of a context from someone who's played since TS1:
    - TS2 was amazing, but it took forever to load. When you opened the game it could easily be 10 minutes or more of looking at the load screen and sometimes wondering 30 minutes later if it's still actually loading or has the whole thing just frozen. For the reflections you had to put your graphic settings to max and it made the game too heavy for many computers to run properly.
    - In TS3 they added the open world everyone really wanted. But the game itself was larger and it needed more memory and overall better specs to run properly, so a lot of people had to buy new computers, which wasn't often possible and people were obviously upset. So the biggest issue EA faced at this point was that a whole lot of the players aren't really "gamers" as in they don't already have expensive gaming computers with the best graphic cards.
    - So when TS4 was announced, they said that they wanted to make the game lighter, that it would run even with older computers and it would open fast. For that they had to ditch the completely open world and construct the cities with smaller areas that are open to explore. This also the reason for the simpler graphics.
    - They also made a lot of changes to the UI and how the game works. Like the emotions. Many say they don't affect the sims enough and I agree to some level, but for example the social menu that expands and the options change with different moods. Also strong emotions like anger or sadness do change the sims' expressions and overall behaviour. IIRC this was already in itself such a big change that better graphics would've made the game way heavier to run.
    - Also: the sims can now scoot when there's less space 🤩 And you don't have to wait forever behind a door to wait for everyone else to get in first. When I played TS3 University, most of the game days were spent walking to places and waiting in front of them to get in. My sims missed their graduation party because there was too many sims in the way 🤷‍♀🤣
    - Also I love that the sims can now do multiple things at the same time. I don't know why reading a book while sitting on the toilet is the first thing that comes to mind, but anyway 😂
    - So yeah, for me playing TS4 is more relaxed as there's less frustration because my adhd ass doesn't have to constantly wait for things to happen 🤣 Also if you're a story writer like me and take a lot of screenshots to be used in the stories, TS4 is seriously a gold mine because of the emotions. The constant smiling IS annoying and it means I have to manage all the sims in the background so they don't just stand there smiling and looking like an idiot, but there's still a whole lot to work with. A lot of different animations and expressions you can use once you get your sims in the right mood.
    - But all that being said I do love TS2 over everything else, I miss it a lot and wish I could play it again😭

I used to be a Sims 4 hater until I really got into it, sure it has it's flaws but it's got a lot of quality of life stuff that the older games are really missing. I really enjoy the collection tracker and not having to befriend random Sims just to get a job promotion like in TS2. Moods and emotions are a fun gameplay element, and it's really cool being able to play the game in first person and see the things you built from that perspective. Not to mention the super quick loading times in TS4 especially compared to TS3.
Of course each Sims game has it's own merits and charms, they are all good games and it really comes down to what type of experience you're looking for. I have fond memories with TS2, TS3, and TS4 spending hundreds if not thousands of hours on each one. I only haven't played the first one because getting it to run on modern systems is a nightmare, not to mention the videos I've seen making it seem like it's really difficult to thrive in that version. It's hard enough in TS2, so I'll stick with it and the others and just enjoy them all depending on how I'm feeling in the moment.

I will say I do like the instant light effect in Sims 4's build/buy mode, because it instantly shows you what the room lighting looks like depending where you place it. Everything else in Sims 2 is top tier though

The sims 2 was really a game they were looking forward to, trying to show the public how far the life sim games could go and how much potential they could have in the future. When they reached sims 3, they even went higher with open worlds, but the sims 4, it is clear that it was a failure from the start, they published an unfinished game thats been 10 years in the making and it still is trash. I have been playing sims 2 exclusivelly lately and havent touched sims 4 in many months, last time i played was with the infant update.
The sims 2 and 3 will always be better, and its great that there are still communities that make mods for these trully good games. I enjoy building in the sims 4 but thats not what you play the sims for. In the sims 2 or 3 i can be hours playing without noticing, playing the sims 4 i start a family, create the sims, build a house and then do gameplay for 10mins. So boring.

Sims 2 was superior in almost every way. It had heart and every expansion was worth every penny. It was amazing! Sims 4 doesn't have heart or soul, just packs of the same objects over and over that costs tons of money and they aren't even functional.

One of the biggest things I miss from sims 2 is house phones and getting those long paragraph scam messages. Those were amazing, sometimes they were really funny and obscure and other times they actually managed to creep little me out and I miss it so much. I wish we could have house phones in newer sims games even though they've fallen into obscurity I still think it would be neat since a lot of homes do still have them. And I wish they would have actually put effort into the scam calls in sims 4 because they're all so obvious and lame compared to the sims 2 ones. I'd love to see a video on all the funny prank/scam calls from sims 2 compared to the sims 4 ones lol.

I think what some Sims 4 players, specifically those who are actively afraid of and/or angered by criticism of their game, don't realize is that most people who don't like it aren't just trying to jump on a hate train for the sake of nostalgia. There are definitely people like that, but for the most part, we honestly just want the game to be better.
It's frustrating to see a game that was released _ten years_ after The Sims 2 initially dropped still not have the small details or the gameplay depth, because we KNOW they can do it. They HAVE done it with TS2 and (to a slightly lesser extent, or perhaps in a different way) TS3. And yet, no matter how much content they add to TS4, it just ends up feeling hollow.
Like, you're allowed to enjoy TS4 or dislike TS2, but just realize that we WANT TS4 to reach its potential. EAxis just continually chooses not to let it. Aspects of the game are actually good or even great, even if they're not perfect, but it feels like the constant pumping out of content is to their detriment. And honestly, it's...kinda obviously a cash grab-why, back in my day (I say, as someone who grew up with The Sims 3 kid and just happens to know too much about The Sims 2), our City Living, Bowling Night, and Dine Out packs all came in one expansion!
TL;DR, we want TS4 to be a better game, but EAxis seems to have no interest in it, so at this point we're just frustrated. It's not like we want to hate a Sims game for the sake of hating it. It's just odd how they put so much heart into a game from 2004 that a game from 2014 seemingly can't even match.

Well I think TS2 and TS4 use different game styles hence the lack of texture or depth...
The lack of casting or light from objects that naturally emit radiation is just unforgivable.

I love both The Sims 2 and 3 but ultimately I end up feeling more for my Sims in Sims 2. I think they just had more subtle touches to the animations, more expressive ones too. I remember playing 3 for the first time and being disappointed because the animations looked comparatively a bit lifeless compared to their Sims 2 counterparts. But I loved it regardless, and it's miles ahead of The Sims 4 in that regard too, 4 Sims look like creepy Stepford Wives.

5:20 nah, this isn't cool. I want my light to come on immediately, this was annoying. "Wondering which game uses the most recent technology" The right one, Sims 4, it doesn't have to schedule lighting calculations, wysiwyg...
7:50 that's a stylistic choice - you never hear someone say they "licked the place clean" as a compliment?
All the last points are just you disliking the game's painterly, simple style. I personally found it awful when sims 2 and 3 took a realistic texture and slapped in on something, sims 4 is drawn from scratch
Edit: about the furnishing/build mode lights - I think sims 2 is made with the assumption that the lightmap might take time to update so they couldn't have the effects show up immediately, it would risk the light lagging behind your cursor as you move around. In sims 4, they knew the system requirement allow for the lightmap to update within one frame and so there's no need for gimmicks. The "smoothness" is literally a hardware limitation

And thats why I prefer a realistic look over a cartoony look in the sims. The realistic look of sims 2 and 3 might have not aged well and cartoony is kind of timeless, but putting effort in a game just creates the better feeling, even when technologie moves on.

  • @dalahast697

EA put less effort into The Sims 4 because it was supposed to be multiplayer. They realized that it was unlikely to work out well and in a very short time they rebuilt the whole game. This is not entirely the fault of the developers, but of the company that did not give time to make a good game as Sims 2 was
