  • We love video games, but does that mean we'll play them for the rest of our lives? There's no precedent for people doing that, but I explain why I think a lot of us will do just that.

Well at 68 I haven’t quite hit geezer status yet but I’m getting there. I’m not as fast at schmups but still hold my own in Destiny and Halo multiplayer. Just finished a crazy 2 player co-op game of Halo Assault with my son online. Play till I’m dead? I’m working on it. Still collect a bunch of gaming stuff too. I enjoy your video’s. Keep em coming!

When we're old, we might have to rely on emulation to get our gaming fix. The accessibility won't be much of an issue, but our ability to play certain genres could very well be problematic. Some of us in nursing homes will be wearing a VR headset, feeling like we're back in our old messy bedroom, playing various consoles on a CRT, all in a completely digital environment. The tech and software already exists today. Imagine how awesome it'll be in 10+ years. Being old will be interesting.

My wife was laughing at me because I've booted up forza horizon 4 for first time in a while and I was gifted 20 super spins. I'm standing there will glee looking at all the new cars I'm unlocking. I do legitimately worry about not being able to play Ninja Gaiden as I age, haha. Nearing 40 now and I can already feel my hands getting ridiculously stiff. I will certainly miss it if that day actually comes. That said, I can't imagine myself ever not playing games. Past my teenage years I haven't been much of a TV guy nor have I ever been into sports. In a South Park episode, Cartman woke up 100 years in the future. He wanted to finally be able to play the Nintendo Wii. But as soon as he got a hold of one, it wasn't possible to connect it anymore. That's something that I'm wondering will happen in real life. With TV's, cables and ports evolving as often as it does, maybe even these upscalers will be obsolete in the future. CRTs will probably not work in 50 years from now, more likely than my cartridge based consoles.

Type of games I play through the remainder of my life will probably continue to ebb and flow as it has. That is, grew up on NES/MasterSystem through PS1, grew out of console and into PC games, specifically FPS types but then grew out of that and BACK to the retro for 90%+ of my gaming game time. I get the itch to get back into Quake (especially with the remaster) every now and again so who knows. Just go with the flow!

Good observation there Birdo, it’s ebbs and flows of time depending on the context of where we’re at in life. My example: yes i’ll play until at least i still have enjoyment for them but if my focus is elsewhere they may take a backseat. When I was in college I still had my consoles but made it abundantly clear that school came first and so I could only play for an hour at most a day or not at all. I stopped playing platformers around 18, and I stopped buying every new 3rd person action game around 30. I fell in love with RTS games about 2 years ago. Honestly, I'll play games in some form until my last year's, but my taste change without much cause other than just getting older. I also stopped caring about Super hero movies about the time of Superman Returns.

My personal plan is to cheat death and play forever.
On a more serious note, a big part of my collecting is doing the best I can to ensure I can play my games as long as I can through buying replacement parts for consoles and/or modifying consoles to help reduce wear. A future project of mine is also to build a temperature/humidity controlled case to help prolong the life of the games themselves. Fully expect my games to last longer than I do!

It was at that time my mom also enjoyed the imperfect port with its dashes for dots, squares for fruit, blinking squares for power pellets, and flickering ghosts. Now the only video game she plays, if at all, is Solitare for the PC.. I guess Angry Birds: Star Wars just wasn't cutting it.

I think I got her to buy Lunar SSS. She joked they were her afternoon "stories' since she didn't like daytime TV. I remember talking about her grandkids and if they ever played her Playstation, and she was like "Hell, NO! They'll scratch the disks! They're only allowed cartridges and the N64." Whoah, this is a complex subject, and depending on your age.
I recently turned fifty and have tried to curb my collecting habits because I realise I don't have enough time to play through what I already own. But it's difficult - old habits die hard.
I also enjoy peace and quiet more nowadays - sitting in the park on a sunny day etc.. Although I always bring my GBA just in case - still best console in the daylight.
I think our perspective of time changes as we get older, and therefor how we spend our time.
I'm a retro gamer (not as planned - time has just caught up with me and I've not gotten around to playing what I already own).
Videogames have helped me through some hard times - they can make you forget pain, either physically or emotionally. Will I be playing Videogames until I die?
    Absolutely!
I'm just hoping to reduce my collecting habit and stop wasting money I may need when I'm older and need to turn 2 bars on the fire.

You know I always think about this question and I'm always like "of course will' but the thought of the possibility that old games won't work anymore, one of or both of my hands will be injured or lost, become blind or deaf or anything scares me

I raid in World of Warcraft with a 76y/o and he plays better than I do. My uncle is pushing 60 and still games daily. Wiis are used in elderly housing for physical therapy and exercise. I think age will change how we play but won't play if we play. Just make sure your hands and eyes stay healthy.
A lot of RPGs require a ton of reading as well.

Im not very old and have about 30 games or so but I intend to play those games forever. I think a lot of people planned to keep their NES games forever when they were younger but even so, most of those people have given up their games which have ended up in someone else's hands. This may be bad for them if they regret getting rid of their games but I'm glad some of those games have ended up with me.

My mother is 78 and she probably beats 15-20 games a year (mostly PS3 at the moment). Unless my hands fall off, I'm pretty sure I'll keep gaming until my final days!

Games can cover a fundamental need for constant stimulation on young ages. One of the blessings of getting older is finally finding peace with yourself and not requiring that type of stimulation to have a feeling of fulfilment. Now, "getting older" is different for each of us, some people just never get old! Well.. if this is good or not, that's a whole new discussion!

I love RPGs and as long as they keep making turn based ones where reflexes aren't an issue I can see myself still playing them just as long as I haven't gotten sick of them in 40-50 years.
But if you stop and think about it the things a lot of our grandparents were interested in were likely seen as childish by their parents and grandparents. Most people just worked and socialized and didn't have much time for leisure so anyone doing anything leisurely were probably thought of as sad by their elders. My grandfather (rest his soul) was a big original Star Trek fan. So much so that he read the books. Especially the ones written by William Shatner. I still remember him as an old man, after having a stroke and not really being able to use his right side or talk very well, sitting in his chair with a Star Trek book firmly grasped in his left hand just lost in it. His parents and grandparents were long gone but if they were around hypothetically I could see them saying how the only book someone should read is the Bible or a Newspaper. To paraphrase Will Smith parents and grandparents just don't understand. Video games are the current evolution of that mind set. But just as my grandfather read and re-watched classic Trek until he passed, I can see myself doing the same things I'm doing now when I'm a senior citizen.

My answer is yes, absolutely. That’s what my overwhelming backlog is for. I hope to accumulate enough to not care if they stop making games I care about. I’m actually a no kids type of guy, so I currently have more time to play than anyone else I know. It’s still not enough, so retirement is my dream.

I will play the retro video games till I die but, as you said, you nailed the point about the taste of change of genres and body reaction as we grow older. I will likely to buy a RetroPie so that I can get to play most of my games when I am in the retirement home.
Beside from that, I am also collecting 90s anime and cartoon DVDs wherever I can. Shows and animation I grew up with which brighten my childhood.

Considering I had a new Atari 2600 as a kid, I'm probably older than most people here and don't plan on stopping any time soon. I know my reflexes can't be as good as they were when I was younger, but I find I do better at most games now than I did then. Maybe it's muscle memory or something.

Me too it was our first system although my dad had a pong game prior. If only he knew the seed he planted with those systems I bet he'd not have done it. Now 40+ years later...game on. Although nothing past ps3 for me now a days thanks to 2300 steam games which I play on my tv with a controller like a system and of course all the past system and games..omg I feel over whelmed thinking of them all I still need to play still!

I think I'll be playing video games into my old age.
My mom (while not a senior citizen) has a doctor who wants her to play platformer games for hand eye coordination. I think as time goes on, more doctors may join my mom's on basically prescribing video games. How cool would that be?
I love the imagery of retirement homes with video games.

We play everything across all genre's and platforms side-by-side every night after work. We each have our own setups so we can play what and when we like. Game on guys, game on.
