Taking proper spinal precautions is a vital skill for EMTs and other first responders. Done right, this skill can prevent further injury, paralysis, or even death during patient care and transport. Spinal Immobilization is one of the NREMT mandatory psychomotor exams and represents a skill that needs to be mastered by EMT candidates.
Stay tuned for a future video from BPM-TV diving into the theory and physiology of spinal immobilization precautions. As always, thanks for watching and for making the difference in your communities. Want to expand you skills? Think you have what it takes to be an EMT? Reassess after completing all the straps but before lifting. This gives you early warning if a loose strap might cause further injury during the lift. Then reassess again once the patient is on the backboard.
There is also a technique for sliding rather than lifting a seated patient. It involves placing the backboard between the seat cushion and the patient's butt, then sliding the patient up and fully onto the backboard. However, it requires about five people.
