Loved this episode as my dad was there during the Bulge with the Seventh Armored Division. He was the driver of M5A1 in a reconn role. His tracks were shot off at St. Vith and the crew had to run back to the American lines on foot. Always interested in this battle. Colonel Moran has to visit the Australian Armour Museum in Cairns, Northern Territories to see restoration at its best. There is also a place in Poland that makes new old parts for most WWII military vehicles.❤
McAuliffe was the Division Artillery commander, then acting 101st commander when Taylor went back to the US for a conference in December’44. It seems appropriate that the Bastogne Barracks was home for an Artillery unit.
dont forget to walk in the forest when your there, i was there (15 years ago) went in the forest (not necessarily following the designated path) and the foxholes etc. are all still there.
The older I get, the more interested I become in history. Thanks for giving us bits and pieces they never taught us in school. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this awesome museum. I sincerely hope they get younger guys to come be part of it. Losing institutional knowledge through retirement is heartbreaking.
This is one of the best museums I have seen on video. Hmmm, the next time I go to Bremen to see family I might have to spend sometime in Bastogne. I hope that will not be considered an invasion.
Had the honor of talking with a veteran of the European fighting , every time he spoke of the combat he would talk about the courage of the men going through enemy fire to get ammo for the BAR , then I find out he was the BAR gunner , that enemy fire was primarily for him . Never a mention of his own courage . Courage so common it was the rule .
I hope you did come to Luxembourg, too...we have also a Battle of the Bulge Museum with nice dioramas, and none else than Patton rests here, with his fellow comrades at Sandweiler military cemetary
The battle/baby campaign was lost in the NORTH (in the first few days), not in the South days later at Bastogne (days later), but the propaganda machine had better sound-bites in the South. Oh, it also had Patton bombasting his way through, too!
Maybe the Mechanics at the Belgium Bastogne Barracks Military Museum, should make contact with the Australian Armoured Museum in Cairns/ Queensland - as they seem to be able to "take a piece of metal and reproduce a part that is not obtainable from original source", or get a local Metal Foundry to reproduce what they want.
I love that old photo of them in the room having dinner. Just because there is a war on there is still no excuse to not do things properly! Get a table cloth and proper settings out!
Maybe they can turn some barricks into a bed and breakfast type deal. And charge extra of course! 🤠🤠Nice tour! Please say high to Sam Houston for me. 😅
@@TheChieftainsHatch That's a shame. I'm sure someday you'll take some grand tour of the western front battlefields and make it out there though. All I ask is you bring your camera!
Somehow I always imagined General McAuliffe standing in a driving snowstorm when he uttered the famous "nuts!", realizing that he most likely sat in a warm basement kind of ruins everything.
Probably not meant but you do come across as a bit flippant in your interactions with the Belgians . If I'm wrong i apologize , They are a brave people .
Why don't the old generation of mechanics who still know how to work on these vehicles wear GoPro cameras and explain what their doing and why, saving the knowledge for later generations? It would require extra pay and funding but other than that what issue could there possibly be? It's so simple but yet money matters so not instantly implementable unless budgeted for.
When I walk down the street, I seldom don't hear Americans speaking. I don't doubt it. We're loud as f***. Even if you had just one American tourist, you'd still hear him in the street, xD
"You are always welcome!"
The sincerity is overwhelmingly wholesome!
So proud to be belgian, the video serie is AMAZING !
I met a belgian once, his name was eddy mercxk or something like that 😂
@samholdsworth: .....but he did not ride a tank, did he.....?!?!?!?😂😂
inventing french fries and giving BJ's to GIs and going 2-0 in those wars is the mark of a great country gotta dock points for Central Africa though
Start paying your way in NATO and then you can afford to be proud
@@jerrysmooth24 hello and what s Is your country G B ???????????
Thank you Chieftain and the Chief of the Bastogne Barracks. Great presentation.
What a wonderfully hospitable place. Great showcase.

Had the pleasure of catching up with the Chieftain at Cairns in 2022.

Thanks! If I suddenly became a gazillionaire, the Rivera could wait; I'd be hopping the globe to musea and other historical sites!!

I got to visit Bastogne about a year ago, and met with a man who was actually alive during the war. I hope he’s doing well.
Looking forward to you fitting into the Valentine 6pdr there.
Wow! Thank you Team Chieftain 🙏🏻 looking forward for the upcoming videos ❤
I hope to get over there in the next few years. My Dad fought in the Battle of the Bulge, 28th ID.
18:05 nice to know Macgyver is also popular in that part of the world.
Yes.....Richard Dean Anderson and his Swiss Army Knife.....a loooooooong time ago......
Love seeing these videos Chieftain. I’ll never get to travel to Europe to see such amazing places. Thanks for all you do.
Awesome video sir, I definitely need to check these places out whenever I visit Bastogne again.
I love when the chieftain is out spanning the globe!
Really Nice!!.. Living just 60km away I now have at least 2 times to visit Bastogne this year. Thanks .
Can't wait to see the rest of the series!
Thanks for your work and sharing.
Great video! Thanks for the bit of history! Waiting for you to say Bugger the museum is on fire… 😂

We are from south of San Antonio, and we may not get that cold, but I have seen days over 110 degrees and high humidity in Mathis Texas!
Thanks for the "saunter round" vid. Great stuff.

Fantastic the Belgian episodes are very informative
Good luck with your museum. I hope everything will be operationanl in their time.
Was at the Barracks Nuts event when the Bradley and Abrams were there just before Covid. Very impessive, but the dessert camo was "out of place"...
I really like these museum tour videos of yours.
Makes me wish I could travel over there. So very cool & seems like nice people.

Went to the barracks in summer. Sad to have missed the second hall
It really makes me want to visit when it reopens.
Great informative videos 👍

I know 'Stavelot' as a turn in the spa racetrack...
odd I didn't link the ideas...
Until I saw this video I had no idea that the Belgian Army had an installation located in Bastogne.
I great strangely excited whenever I see a Chenillette :D
Wow. Great. Thanks!

Excellent - factual, historical and interesting! What more to ask for?

And have loud shouty men come in at 06:00 to get you out of bed for a five mile run before breakfast at no extra charge...
Ooh, driving a Leopard tank in the Gunfire Museum? That's fun.
Thanks for another interesting video.
12:26 I was there in July 🥲
If I were a young tank mechanic in the Belgian Army, I would be at that museum every weekend rebuilding history.
Apologies if this was mentioned or answered somewhere already, but were you able to make it out to Fort Ében-Émael? Manage to record anything there?
No,I did not make it there

Nice. Grab a bottle of the local Airborne beer.
I went with the Patton beer instead
That works too..tho you missed the ceramic helmet cup. LOL. Tip o' tin lid from an old vet.

I suspect he really said "bol***ks".
Yes, that would be the equivalent British term.

So... I'm assuming that most of the store clerks and business staff, in the town, speak English?
By my own experience as a German, yes they do... Most of them better than German.😇
They are a barracks. There should be enough beds 😂😂😂😂
We should have mandatory military service in all of Europe..
10:15 shame you cant touch the exhibits
I once went to the MC Hammer museum and it was filled with signs telling you not to touch anything
