- What better way to celebrate #ManateeAppreciationDay than with an inspirational manatee release! Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute participated in the release of Latke into the St. Johns River yesterday. This female subadult manatee was rescued by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, and CMARI in December of 2023 with an elevated respiration rate and symptoms of cold stress. She was transported to SeaWorld for critical rehabilitation care and weighed in at only 800 pounds.
At her final weigh in before release, Latke weighed in at 1025 pounds! This animal was tagged for CMARI’s Northern Atlantic Coast Manatee Study and as part of a cooperative study with state and federal agencies to assess manatee movement and habitat use as a result of the Unusual Mortality Event, an event in 2021 representing the highest number of manatee deaths recorded on the Atlantic coast over a six-month period.
As we look towards the future of CMA, we are grateful for the impending completion of our Manatee Rehabilitation Center. The completion of the center will allow us to participate in all aspects of manatee conservation work, from rescue, to rehabilitation, release, and post-release monitoring!
