Great informative video Simon. Just a question, can this gimbal control the basic native phone camera like taking pic or start n stop recording of videos?
Great video. I'm looking to use a SmallRig iphone 13 Pro Max case with the Crane M3, did you say it comes with the piece needed to do so? Do I need a specific kit?
Great video! I was wanting to compare these two. So it seems A) if I use moment lenses and filters, payload would be too heavy for the Smooth 5 B) The Crane m3 seems too cumbersome to balance each time Am I better off just using a rig and learning to handhold my shots with say a Moment Cage or Smallrig ? Then use stabilization in phone and in post processing ?
the Smooth 5 can actually handle Moment lens + filters, as long as it's balanced well. Using a gimbal allows you to get certain cinematic shots you can't get from handheld. But if you simply want the camera to be steady, then you don't need a gimbal. I go over it in this video: ruclips.net/video/xACa1xkkwd4/видео.html Plus my ebooks which you can download as a member: www.patreon.com/SilentEye In my Gimbal Guide I explain how to create your own gimbal shots and the basic principles behind cinematic camera movement.
@@SiHorrocks wow great video on gimbals! I like the section about monopods+gimbal shots. Would the om5 with extendable pole support a iPhone 13 pro max with moment lens and filters even if it’s above the rated 290g?

Hi, great video! Is there an iPhone app that can be used with the Crane M3 gimbal that can use one of the levers to zoom in and out while recording on your iPhone? Let me know what you can, please thank you.
Thank you Simon once again for this awesome review / tutorial!! I have a question if you don't mind; Since the iPhone 13 Pro Max has optical (OIS) instead of electronic, do you just leave it on or have you had better results turning it off while using the gimbal? Thanks again and always looking forward to your content! 👍
How did you find mounting the phone upside down with the lens near the motor ? Were there any instances where the gimbal was in frame ? Are you going to review the M2S in the near future ? Im assuming vortex works when using an iPhone ? Sorry for all the questions Regards Darren
Simon, I found the smartphone mount to be a notch above useless. I have the Moment Thin case on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. The Zhiyun smartphone clamp could not properly span the wide of the cover and actually pulled it away from the phone’s body. That was unacceptable for me. Plus it caused the phone to be too far to the rear, causing it to be back-heavy. The first issue was solved by ordering the Ulanzi ST-02S Metal Phone Tripod Mount (opens much wider and has a cold shoe on top) from Amazon for $14.95. That took care of the mount properly holding the phone (not pulling the case away from the phone’s body). The next issue was the phone needed to be moved forward of the Crane-M3’s “default” location to enable properly balancing. I already had a Ulanzi ST-16 Metal Tripod Mount which had a plate with multiple screw holes that allow for adjusting the entire mount forward or backward on a tripod head. I cannibalized it by removing that plate, attached the ST-02S to that, and mounted the whole thing on the quick release plate for the Crane-M3. This configuration allowed moving the iPhone forward of what the Zhiyun mount was allowing. Thus the iPhone can now be truly balanced as any other camera would be. I hope this is clear enough to help those who are frustrated by the “default” mounting provided by Zhiyun. Yes, it's added expense, but well worth it considering what you get in return. If you would like to see photos, email me at no_spam_2001 (at) hotmail (dot) com. I’m more than happy to share them with you.
Thank you very much for this video. I use Zhiyun crane M2 with iphone12 and Moment lens, then I have quite a problem in balancing by having to put the iphone upside down. Even if the balance is already set, it seems that the power of the motor is not related to the weight of the phone+lens. From your video , I think this Zhiyun crane M3 will solve the problem of motor power because it has auto calibrate.
I actually was hoping you’d cover this gimbal and you did! Thanks Mr. Simon. The absence of the record button will be missed but the benefits of controlling your tilt via a physical button far outweighs it.
@@sachmolo7802 from what I understood from Mr. Simon, there is not dedicated record button ( you cannot start recording by pressing a physical button on the gimbal ) as opposed to DJI Osmo or Zhiyun smooth 5.
This is so helpful. I have been interested in this gimbal for the payload. This is the best overview I've seen....by far. Great video thanks for the upload. One question I purchased the crane m3 yesterday and had issues out the box im using for a s22 ultra that and the holder weigh about 9oz. Whe i try to use pan motor it gets to a point where it feels like it either gets stuck or glitches ive even had it beep loud and shut off few times tried changing to less torque but the problem is still there at about 190 degrees it pops and glitches makes vortex video look twitchy. 2nd problem it will not calibrate no matter what it fails i feel my balance is within 5 to 10% and onscreen doesn't show any resistance so pretty balanced. I am wondering if it has to do with the weight too light. Only reason i got this was for extra torque when i get my sony a7c and can also use for my phone I would have gone with ronin rs3 but i doubt it will detect my phone and over kill for 7c i feel. This actually looks great! Thank you for the thorough review - I do wonder however, would this need, or even benefit from having a Beastgrip cage mounted on it? Can a bigger cage even be mounted?
depends if you want to mount extra stuff that you need a cage to mount - like a BeastGrip lens for example. Otherwise it's not needed. I guess you could mount a bigger cage but it's all about balance. If you have too much weight at one side it won't work
@@SiHorrocks That makes total sense. Thank you! I keep comparing all these new bigger hybrid gimbals to the Weebill S, so in my mind the cage is a must lol
I'd sure love to hear more about caged or Beastgrip uses. That's a big deal for me as I want to shoot WITH add-on audio and some lens. BUT with the ability to grab and go on-and-off the gimbal as-needed. And, I'm running an S21 Ultra and Beastgrip or Smallrig seem best suited... I do NOT know if it's practical. Input?
@@bob2453 one big problem with cages is the push the weight too high. I tried the Beastgrip universal cage on the M3 and couldn't really balance it - too much weight at the top - and I couldn't turn it upside down either to put the weight at the bottom
@@bob2453 I think from the Zhiyun family of gimbals, the Weebill S is the one that can take up a cage such as the Beastgrip, in fact numerous reviews would show you that in order to run the Weebill S with a smartphone you need weight. But the hindrance is that it takes a good deal of time to setup that combo. I'm also running on the S21 Ultra and finding a new gimbal is a bit of a pain. Decided to grab the Beastgrip while I'm researching just to have a secure cage (I dropped it off of the Ulanzi rig).
I'm buying a gimbal this week and it's between the M3 Crane and the Smooth 5. I already have a full DLSR rig and only plan to use this gimbal for my Pixel 6 Smartphone, Moment case and lenses. Do you think the M3 is overkill?

Is there a sturdy, but easy-to-set-up tripod that anyone recommends where the transmount at the base of the gimbal could be used? Where the cam rigs stays on the gimbal but CAN also be used and part of a normal day of shooting W/tripod if needed? The tripod could raise to eye level with a host.
Always love your videos and reviews! I have the Osmo 4 and just purchased the Crane M3. I can see the advantages of using the M3 if you have lots of larger lenses and attachments. I only hope Zhiyun gives us some updated software and firmware to use for the iPhone 13/14 and for the Sony ZV-E10! I want the functionality I get with the Osmo on the M3. Oh well....first world problems!
so can you vlog with the front facing camera on an iphone 13 pro max or does the gimball get in the shot? What I mean is do you have to vlog with the back camera or can I use the front facing camera also?
You can double click mode button into Portrait mode to take video. If you want to use gimbal to carry iPhone 13 Pro Max, I suggest that you can select Smooth 5.
Hi, If you move the smartphone with a case (polarpro eg) enough to be able to connect a lightning (power) cable plus a case, a lens or filters.... is a perfect balance achieved? Thank you.
if you use the same set up all the time (moment lens and Vnd filter). I assume once perfectly balanced with phone flush against the arm, you can leave the phone mount attached to the quick release plate. Therefore, reattach plate with mount on, put the phone back in flush and should be perfectly balanced ?
Fifth time watching this while waiting for delivery lol. I bought the basic package and the Ulanzi ST-27 phone clamp. I'm concerned about the clamp fitting properly. In any case, thank you sir. New sub :)
Thanks Mr. Simon it's a pleasure to learn from your videos. I would like to ask you if in the videos shot with Iphone 12 pro max and the Moment anamorphic lens you disable the stabilization in Filmic pro in order not to have that annoying "jelly effect". Thank you
I struggled with Crane M2, and knew, almost immediately it wasn't for me with a smartphone. M3 looks substantially better, but the complete lack of any interface for phone is a deal-breaker fir now. If say, Zhiyun added Fimic Pro integration? I would get it in a heartbeat. I'm always seeking excuses to buy gear, lol, but since I need to CHOOSE between Smooth 5/Crane M3, Smooth 5 wins the day. If ANYONE has a reason I would want to grab M3, be it rumor, or other information, can you say so now? I must decide in next 17 days, nudge nudge Wink Wink 😉
surely i would go with the crane M3 (if you have the budget) first of all the crane m3 is able to mount different filming devices (mirroless, phone and gopro) so u dont have to get another gimbal if you have other devices. the m3 doesnt obstruct the phone ports directly as well, besides you are future proof for the extra mods you will be adding in the future as it has no max load compared to the 300g on smooth 5, having a screen is both good and bad, its easy to navigate but i guess it is more prone to damage, lastly it looks super dope haha, i want to get it for my iphone 13 pro max but it is a bit out of my budget as im just venturing into this hobby , sadly there are really no good mobile gimbal out there right now that can properly support a iphone 13 pro max with case and lenses except crane m3
@@EriX88888 The ZY Play software does not do anything, can't shoot through it, you have to use the native Iphone camera app, and all you are doing is balancing the CAMERA, nothing else, can't control anything like zoom, shutter speed, focus...nothing!!! It can switch modes between Pan Follow Mode (PF)/Lock Mode (L)/POV Mode (POV)/Follow Mode (F)/Go Mode(GO)/Vortex Mode (V) and Portrait Mode without re-calibration.
Found a FLAW in the new Zhiyun Crane M3: when built-in light is turned up anything above 50% (to 100%) brightness, the handle (or motors) vibrate. From 1% to 49% brightness, it's fine. Maybe the energy for the light is taking away some from one/all motors and changing the motor torque? I'm using my iPhone 13 Pro Max with SmallRig Cage. BALANCE CHECK multiple times: manually and autocalibration. 100% repeatable. Confirm on YOUR end please? :) Thanks!

Hi, I'm considering this gimbal or used DJI Osmo 3 (that would cost significantly less). We are using this gimbal for interior real estate videos and also PHOTOS. The photo part is what I am concerned about when using a samsung S20+ WIDE ANGLE. Will both gimbals allow our agent to take still photos in WIDE ANGLE MODE with the s20+ while utilizing the features of this gimbal? Ie, the camera/phone will remain perfectly flat while taking photos? Thanks
both gimbals will do that. I wouldn't use a gimbal when taking photos, however. Maybe the OM 4 would be better, because the magnetic clamp allows you to quickly remove the phone and take a photo. If you really want the phone on the gimbal, the Crane M3 does allow you to use the wheel to adjust the horizontal level

Hey , what about mobile app and additional modes ? is it possible ? ( Like Smooth 5 does )
Is there a sturdy, but easy-to-set-up tripod that anyone recommends where the transmount at the base of the gimbal could be used? Where the cam rigs stays on the gimbal but CAN also be used and part of a normal day of shooting W/tripod if needed? The tripod could raise to eye level with a host.
Always love your videos and reviews! I have the Osmo 4 and just purchased the Crane M3. I can see the advantages of using the M3 if you have lots of larger lenses and attachments. I only hope Zhiyun gives us some updated software and firmware to use for the iPhone 13/14 and for the Sony ZV-E10! I want the functionality I get with the Osmo on the M3. Oh well....first world problems!
Is this better than the dji om4??

so can you vlog with the front facing camera on an iphone 13 pro max or does the gimball get in the shot? What I mean is do you have to vlog with the back camera or can I use the front facing camera also?
Please can I connect lightning comfortably to my iPhone in other to connect to audio on the m3
Do you have a preference? Or do you like both
I like both. Sometimes the M3 might be overkill
Can use it for SONY FDRX Action camera
When will filmic pro bring out a pro gimbal for smart phones or even join up with the likes of Zhiyun
Can you use the phone in vertical mode?
what mounts would you recommend so that I can add my ntg on the crane with my iphone 13 pro max?
I am really confused here. How can you connect a microphone when the gimbal are is blocking the IPhone port.
Can we use crane m3 vertical position with usage of joystick ?
And what is your suggestion which gimbal should we buy for iPhone 13 Pro Max ?
You can double click mode button into Portrait mode to take video. If you want to use gimbal to carry iPhone 13 Pro Max, I suggest that you can select Smooth 5.
Hi, If you move the smartphone with a case (polarpro eg) enough to be able to connect a lightning (power) cable plus a case, a lens or filters.... is a perfect balance achieved? Thank you.
can i ask how to remove the sleep mode?
Hi Simon, question, if you have to pick just one gimbal for iPhone, what will it be?
my 2 fav gimbals are Hohem iSteady M6 and Insta360 Flow (don't ask me to choose between them) ;)
Thanks Simon
if you use the same set up all the time (moment lens and Vnd filter). I assume once perfectly balanced with phone flush against the arm, you can leave the phone mount attached to the quick release plate. Therefore, reattach plate with mount on, put the phone back in flush and should be perfectly balanced ?
yes certainly. The gimbal won't fold up completely, but if you don't mind that then it would be very easy to use the quick release mounting plate
@@SiHorrocks I assume if you remove the quick release plate, it would fold up completely.
@@jonathanquinn9444 yes but you would have to unlock the arm and move it, so that next time you use it you will need to go through rebalancing
Fifth time watching this while waiting for delivery lol. I bought the basic package and the Ulanzi ST-27 phone clamp. I'm concerned about the clamp fitting properly. In any case, thank you sir. New sub :)
welcome to the channel!
Thanks.. Should be getting the M3 today so I've become a patron. Look forward to reading your book. Cheers
@@denmorin ah awesome thank you. Welcome!
Thanks Mr. Simon it's a pleasure to learn from your videos. I would like to ask you if in the videos shot with Iphone 12 pro max and the Moment anamorphic lens you disable the stabilization in Filmic pro in order not to have that annoying "jelly effect". Thank you
Everything in this video was shot with the native iPhone camera app. As long as the phone doesn't wobble on the roll axis it should be ok
@@SiHorrocks thank you Mr. Simon
Finally! Here from reddit rig buddy. Lol
How do you detach the expansion I dont wanna stress it to much by trying
It's look easy very good thankyou for sharing
Ist das gimbel für eine gopro hero 9 black geeignet?
Do you think the smooth 5 can handle the iPhone 14 pro max and moment case ,lens with filter and dji wireless mic?
The mic will push the phone further out of the clamp, so I would guess not
@@SiHorrocks m3 it is that’s all I needed to know I appreciate you brotha. Great video by the way🤝
I struggled with Crane M2, and knew, almost immediately it wasn't for me with a smartphone.
It's a piece of hardware only. No software. Absolute deal breaker.
What kind of microphone do you used?
listed in the description
Hey Simon how are you, I had some queries regarding RUclips just wanted to know if you could answer it would be much helpful to me thanks loves watching your videos always 👍
hey so i was in the market for a new phone here in the states to start my filmmaking journey. and i watched your best smartphone video and i really like your explanation of the Xperia 5 ii.. but its sold out could you do or tell me about the xperia 1 iii.. it cost more but i dont know any thing about it... wanted to do my due diligence before making that investment...
Does it go from vertjcal to horizontal without recalibration?
:) Thanks!
I haven't experienced that. Have you contacted Zhiyun?
Using the same set up with the Crane M3 ,only difference is i use the iphone 13pro max as has better cameras ,are you using a longer base plate as i am unable to attach the smallrig cage & Videomic NTG as shown in the video ?
I only used the one which came with the M3. Did you place the iPhone upside down?
@@SiHorrocks i belive the problem is the iphone 12 pro max smallrig cage might be 2or3 mil shorter than the the 13 pro max cage as unable to screw the lock screw to the baseplate when upsidedown, also have a moment case with lenses wil try and add a phone holder to the M3 baseplate with an intergrated coldshoe for the NTG see if that works
link for that long trs cable?
Hi,, I need your help I want to use filmic remote but distance between two device is 30 to 40 fits , Because I have a self made crean , so how can I use it ? Plz reply me , if I want to use cable ,How can I use ? Or any other options ?
Please can you make a video about where we can get the zhyun product parts if we lost any of the accessories such as the phone clamp and other accessories because I lost my zhiyun smooth Q2 phone clamp 🗜️ and I couldn't find anywhere to buy it
have you tried contacting Zhiyun?
@@SiHorrocks yes I did but they didn't respond to me
Hi, I'm considering this gimbal or used DJI Osmo 3 (that would cost significantly less).
If you really want the phone on the gimbal, the Crane M3 does allow you to use the wheel to adjust the horizontal level
can the gimbal control the phone ? iphone 13 pro
like video on off buttons? if yes please let me know how
No, it just support stable function for smartphone, not support button control shooting.
Dude I love your channel. You seriously make super solid content with good advice. I make similar stuff on my channel. I compete in film festivals and I’m even working on a feature film
hey Ryan! thanks man. I remember watching one of your shorts, I think you submitted it to us? The Faces one. Cool short
@@SiHorrocks that’s awesome that you remembered that one. That one was definitely fun to make and has a good message. Not the same quality as the stuff I make now with with filmic pro and the moment lenses haha.
@@watsonryan907 great to hear that you're still making films and developing your knowledge and skills. It's all about practice
Question - Does the Zhiyun Crane M3 work with an Android phone??? The Crane M2 only worked on IOS and Not Android.
