  • Rise of Flight - Airco D.H.2 career with a demonstration of why he does not shoot at the aircraft with inoperative engine. Payback second German pilot was cruel.

    That Albatross with the dead engine seems to have the glide angle of an open class sailplane.

    Made me think of Major Lanoe Hawker's epic duel in a DH2 at low level with the ascendant Manfred Von Richthofen in an albatross. The 'spinning incinerator' should have been replaced by that time. Too late for Hawker.

    A single gun on the DH 2 had to be a disadvantage...

  • @EstonianShark

    The D II was superior to the DH2 in almost everyway. All aces in the DH2 had their kills against slow-moving or unarmed recon planes. The D II was the reason the DH2 was pushed aside and the Nieuport 17 and the Sopwith Pups were put into action.

      I would have expected the DH2 to have the edge over Eindeckers.

    • @EstonianShark
      @EstonianShark 3 года назад +2

      @@wdtaut5650 that was why they were introduced but they were still being used by the time the Albatros D.III came along. It had outlived it's usefullness.

      Until the pup all the brits had was the DH.2...They bought some Nieuport 11s and like 150ish Nieuport 17s from the French, which is what Albert Ball used, but once the Albatross hit the skies in Late summer/Early Autumn of 1916, it essentially reversed the Entente rule of the skies held since mid 1916...The Pup and the french Getting More and more Spad VIIs wouldn't reverse the Albatross lead till summer 1917, when SE5s and Spad XIIIs were showing up

    • @EstonianShark
      @EstonianShark 2 года назад +1

      @@granddukeofmecklenburg I would personally say that by August the tide was turning. Once the D.III was being outclassed it was basically over. The Germans didn't have much else other than the D.III except D.IIs and the Dr.1 wasn't being produced. The D.Va wasn't as good as the D.III and was already outclassed but only slightly by its opponents, doesn't make it a bad plane just not enough for Germany. The US being able to mass produce places or help in the distribution of resources lead to the Entente outnumbering the Germans in the sky. The French had their Spads, the US mostly the same, the Brits their Sopwith Camels, Bristol F.2s, SE.5a's against the german Albatross D.III and its ancestors. Late war... we won't talk about that lol

    • @deecoe372
      @deecoe372 6 лет назад +4

      Probably out of MG ammo (they couldn't carry that many drums because of weight) and the plane was pretty badly shot up; manuverability at that point was probably close to nil. You get a fragile aircraft and then put damage into it, just a gentle turn could rip off a wing. The other bad thing about a pusher...if you had a rough landing in a tractor, you could survive. If you had a rough landing in a pusher you could end up with your engine slamming into the back of your head.

      Harry Tate entered squadron service in 1916 but its progenitor - the Be2c soldiered on into 1917 and even to the end of the war on the secondary fronts.

      +Joeben Pajes Engalan - Yeah pretty much. There was only one pilot who was an ace during the time of the Airco DH2 and his name was Major Lanoe George Hawker. The dh2 was going up against the Albatros dii and they didn't stand a chance. Hawker himself was killed in his dh2 against Von Richtonfen. After fighting down to an altitude of 500 meters Hawker tried to escape but the dh2 was too slow and the red baron put him down.

      "There was only one pilot who was an ace during the time of the Airco DH2 and his name was Major Lanoe George Hawker" what really dude they are 14 pilots that became Aces on the DH2 also Pusher Aircraft did server well in WWI as ground attack and night fighter role read the Pusher Aces of World War 1 by Osprey

    This is all very nice, but what I really want to see is the use of a flare gun to take out an enemy aircraft. I am sure that it was tried. not sure if anyone every managed to achieve it, but perhaps someone did.

    There is another entry showing Feetoobees getting attacked and full credit to the gunners who had to climb out of the plane without a parachute or harness to fire rearwards over the top wing. It would have taken extreme bravery to do that. AND Richtofen was shot in the head by one of these guys. I would have posted there but the comments are locked.
