Should’ve known when this video came out that the Phillies were the most underrated of any underdog team! they surprised in every way possible and I’m for it
The best addition the Phils made this offseason is Kevin Long. Dude can just flat out teach people how to hit, and has a great ability to hne in on what hitters need to do to improve.
Dont sleep on Moniak he's gonna be nasty this season. Kevin Long as hitting coach has turned him around and also, helped Stott make the roster. Yes the the free agents a big upgrade, but with these young guys, it could make their line up incredibly deep.
I appreciate the video on the Phillies but I’m a firm believer that it won’t be as bad as projected, 2nd, CF, and C were solid last year and didi at short last year played with an injury that left him incapable of extending his arm, stott plays a better defense than bohm at 3rd, I’m not saying this team will be good defensively because 1st and LF are going to be a nightmare but I truly believe it won’t be as bad as projected
@@galap0g0sisland I feel like it’s warranted a little bit, like the Phillies won’t be a good defensive team but I think it’s been over exaggerated a lot and it’s blown out of proportion
Just watching this for the first time and just amazed by the accuracy of this video as a life long philly fan, literally played the Utley inside the parker that J.T hit this postseason too like you can't make this shit up.
i think someone on the staff of the Phillies seen this, love seeing how all this panned out, 9:35 hold up wait isnt this the same way J.T. got his inside the parker today 😎😎
The Phillies just clinched the 3rd Wild Card spot in this year’s post season. Has the “experiment” worked? Or is this just a prelude to it excelling in the 2022 postseason? What is your opinion on this, now that the 2022 regular season is pretty much over?
This approach has been tried before. Most of the time it fails. I'm a Texas rangers fan for a long time. I remember the 1990s and early 2000s rangers. They were terrible with the exception of 3 years, they were all slug and no defense. About the only persons playing defense in those teams was Pudge Rodriguez and Kenny Rogers. Gary Matthews did have his moments though.
It’s also worth mentioning that McCutchen was AWFUL defending LF for the Phillies last year. You’re replacing a bad defender with someone who can’t be worse. With stott, moniak having a good spring, Didi looking healthy, and Kilambi’s (math genius from Tampa) additions in the bullpen, this team is gonna win over 90 games and potentially the NL east. Bookmark this comment, it’ll age well
I'm also a Phillies fan and I agree with you that we'll see a lot of 8-6, 9-7 games. I can live with that. And as for defense, these young guys can be coached to play better in the field.
Solid, solid video. As of this post the Phils are 6-8, super early in the season. Losses have occurred mostly due to the bats disappearing and starting pitching struggling. Bullpen has been outstanding and defense hasn't been an issue so far. Gonna check back periodically to see where they are; probably every 16 games.
Could you please make a video on the Phillies season at the end of September? See what happened that people thought they couldn’t or wouldn’t do this season, what they improved on, and how they navigated this season to make the playoffs. Love your videos
It is easier to put together a team that scores five runs a game and gives up four than one that scores 4.5 and gives up 3.5. A 162 run differential is worth about 18 wins, so these would be, roughly, 99 win teams, division winners. The problems with run prevention-emphasis are that it is more costly to prevent runs and the approach is much less stable over time owing to higher rates of debilitating injuries in pitchers that arise from supination of the wrist and forearm when throwing cutters and sliders and slurves and curves. Dr. Mike Marshall was the authority on this. The bottom line is that is a more sound strategy to create separation with run scoring than with run prevention. What the Phillies are doing, what Dombrowski has done before, and what the infield and outfield coaches are saying is absolutely valid. Kiermaier in his best year was not a better baseball player than Harper, because you can’t make up for huge offensive gaps with defense, not over time. Defense is important but far less important than hitting and with the increasing strikeouts defense is also becoming less and less important than pitching. People will bring up the Rays as an example of winning with pitching and defense lol but the Rays score around five runs a game-they aren’t the 80’s Cards, not by a long shot.
7:30 to 7:40 is insane. The Phillies did end up going to the playoffs as a wild card seed (6th as well) and anything could happen (and they went to the World Series). The clip also shows the Phillies hitting a home run off of San Diego, their NLCS opponent. Wow!
I remember watching this 6 months ago as just another fun vid of yours to watch, but seeing it again. you have a good attention to ail and basing hot tkaes of of facts and not feelings!! also I'm so happy for harper, I hope he gets his first chip this year!
I'm not a Phillies fan. Never seen your channel before, but I threw you a like and a sub and this comment at around the 15 second mark. I can tell you produce quality content. Keep it up. Will now resume watching.
I agree this isn't a concern. Schwarber became a decent left fielder, seen him play from IU thru the Nationals/Red Sox last season...where he was used at 1B, made some laughable errors. Starting as a catcher, a learning curve was going to take place, which a determined Schwarber makes work with his baseball IQ. Same with Castellonos coming up at 3B. He gets to balls he should get too with a much above average arm(s). Castellonos, the 50 doubles season, split between Detroit and the Cubs. He made the plays he should make. Their combined offensive capability far outweigh them not likely to win gold gloves. Castellonos maybe a triple crown threat, at least a batting title is within his reach...while Schwarber could lead the league in homeruns if he stays healthy. Just like the other fringe playoff teams, make the playoffs, hope your 1 and 2 starters can be stoppers in a short series. (Not a Phillies fan, cursed as a Cubs fan). Beware of the Phil's winning 12-10 games during the regular season. They will score, and play MLB level defense, (when not at DH for Schwarber/Castellonos). See what they get out of pitching staff, from starters closer? Might be fun year for Phillies? Good luck .
not focusing on defense still brought them all the way to the world series, but it probably also lost them said world series with a few HUGE errors throughout the series, as a phillies fan, getting a trea turner or correa would be amazing, as well as getting rid of rhys, and having harper back in right field, this team is only a great defense away from a championship
They did definitely break baseball! No one predicted this! No one saw this coming! 2 more games at the bank and hopefully 2 more wins to the series! Go FIGHTINS!!!
What I think the Phillies should do is put a package deal together of Bohm, Vierling, & Didi & trade them & try to get a quality Center Fielder. Bohm, I think, is only going to improve, Vierling hits harder than Bryce, Nick, & Kyle ( if you don't believe me, look at some stats ), & while I like Didi, he's getting a little long in the tooth ). But even though think there is promise for Bohm & Vierling, with apologies to Moniak, who is promising also, a quality CF would improve the defense. Camargo, an instant upgrade at third, would also improve the D, & I really think Stott has a chance at rookie of the year. They also have a young Venezuelan CF on the team named Muzziotti that's worth looking at.
As a Phillies fan who doesn't remember their short dynasty in the 2000s, I hope they can do it for the fans NL PENNANT BABYYYY!! GET THAT BLUE FLAG UP IN ASHBURN ALLEY!!
I think the Phillies infield defense has looked better this spring. Didi is fully healthy now and has looked good at shortstop with some great plays. Stott is a significant upgrade at 3B over Bohm in terms of defense. Segura has always been a good fielder and was decent last year, but will hopefully be even better. For me personally I can´t disagree with the questions over the outfield defense, however, Harper has a CANNON, same with Castellanos, who I would assume are the two that will play the most out there. So at least they aren´t bad fielders AND has noodle arms, that would be even worse. But yes, dingers over defense. That´s the vibe.
I was hoping the Reds would have used Castellanos as their DH this year ! He is an exciting player to watch hit, you just don't ever want the ball hit to him ! Good luck to him !
18-21. Still a lot of season to go. But not looking good as of the morning of may 21. Though mets are dealing with Pitching injuries. Will see how things play out next few months.
If the defense ends up being as bad as projected, then opposing hitters will likely just have to change their approach. Their goal should be to make contact and put the ball in play. Don't take risks on hitting for pure power if you can count on their subpar defense to let them down. So just start the season as normal, and go from there.
Keep in mind that Moniak is coming up and had the top three most Homeruns in spring training. Stott contract was taken and will be with the team as well. Those two were hitting hard. bohm is still a great hitter and can be a great DH if needed.
9 runs in game 1. Some issues with Stott at 3rd on tough plays but this is gonna be the best offense in baseball. You’re gonna need to make a lot of errors to lose games you score 9 in.
Let’s not act like it’s a normal occurrence, the most bummiest of teams have scored a lot of runs. Shit the guardians and have scored 17 and 10 in their last two games do they have the best offense in baseball? The Phillies offense will be good will it make up for their average pitching and horrible defense? no. And defense is not only a factor with errors it’s about plays being made.
Great video, i enjoy the comparisons by the numbers. Can you do a video like this breaking down the numbers for how good the blue jays are projected to be vs teams with those numbers in the past?
Glad you compared the current team to at least one year of their golden era. I'd like to know what the defensive stats were for their world series winning team and even maybe a direct comparison
Interesting video. We'll see how it works out for the Phillies this year. Really surprised that Dombrowski was able to talk Middleton to go over the luxury tax threshold. Let's Go!!!!!
With the league’s March toward the 3 true outcomes I could see them doing better than they might seem at first, since emphasis on defense is becoming less and less each year. Probably not *playoff* caliber but not as bad as, say, the 2021 diamondbacks
Really comparing this team to the diamondbacks? They barely missed the playoffs last year, if their bullpen wouldn't have blown so many games they would've made it. Team is all around a good bit better than last year
A big reasons why Phillies pitchers struggled last season is like you said, bad defense. Segura is a good defender at second, Didi is healthy this season and will be average at SS, and Stott has a good glove and is expected to be average at 3rd. So expect improved pitching due to improved infield defense. Outfield defense will be terrible though. But Phillies have a few ground all pitchers. And obviously this team will mash! I expect them to be bad on defense overall but still better than people are saying.
Gonna be quite a few 6-5, 7-4, 7-5 kinda games this year. Not sure how they fare, they’re probably a borderline WC team, but it should be entertaining, that’s for sure.
Best case with Dave Dumbrowski is he will catch lightning in a bottle and make your team a contender, worst case with Dumbo is he will sell your farm system, bloat your payroll, and set your team back 5-10 years. He’s super aggressive.
They’ll be dangerous but not scary. A 6-2 lead against the Phillies feels a lot safer than a 6-2 lead against the Dodgers, because the pitching doesn’t slam the door the same way. This Phillies team wins by hitting clutch late in games. Will be a fun case study to follow, but on paper, feels like a recipe for disaster. No stoppers in the pen and a front-heavy rotation. I’m a Red Sox fan and feel the same way about our squad, and I feel like both teams are relatively equally situated within their divisions. Should be interesting to compare the moves they make throughout the year
When you mentioned the Braves, I expected you to mention they had no real centerfielder. it was just a bunch of bad defensive corner outfielders and Adam Duvall, a great defensive corner outfielder who had played a single game in CF prior to 2021 as their everyday CF
Eflin and Didi were both injured last year so I expect both of them to have comeback seasons. And they both have done really good in Spring training, and Didi did pretty good today in the first real game
I love how all the hopeful comments here and talking about the new hitting coach and how he's putting in a lot of work and seeing a lot of improvement on the hitting side, while this whole video is about how the defense sucks and no team has ever won a World Series with a defense that's going to be this bad.
Great video really.... as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.

I’m a Red Sox fan and feel the same way about our squad, and I feel like both teams are relatively equally situated within their divisions. Should be interesting to compare the moves they make throughout the year
This is what we in gamer circles would refer to as a "glass cannon" approach.

As a pirates fan we will never win a World Series and every person in Pittsburgh has understood that fact since Nutting took over
As a die hard Phillies fan I pray we make the playoff’s
Ball go boom, all I gotta say
Holy shit, you have the exact same voice as Matt patt.
I'm glad you brought up that tigers team! Defense wins championships
“Making a World Series nearly impossible”
