Synth Stuff Ep. 11 - Oberheim Matrix-6

- I absolutely love the sound of Oberheim synthesizers, but the famed OB series is costly and require pretty serious maintenance. The Matrix series has a lot of that Oberheim character for much less money. The Matrix 6 is a bit tedious to program, but it's not impossible and it's very rewarding. This has become one of my favorite synths I've ever owned - just give it a bit of chorus and/or reverb to give it some extra life as I have here with my trusty Lexicon. Before anyone asks, yes - I would take this over the Dave Smith OB-6. The OB6 sounds great by itself, but somehow I find it doesn't capture what I hear in my head as the Oberheim sound.

Great video - Perfect showcase of the Oberheim sound on the Matrix-6
1:34 Little known fact: Satie was a an Oberheim endorser, and wrote the Gymnopedie series for the Matrix 6.
The first time I heard "Trois Gymnopédies" was on a 'B' side of a Gary Numan '45. Beautiful!

No way
hahahahahaa brilliant !
Very funny. 😂 Though, one might be inclined to think so, given how good it sounds on there.
😅😂🤣👍
I am in Love with my Matrix 6 keys. I build a Alpes Controller and in the process of buying an additional Matrix 6R. Totally underrated and lush sounding synth. Has an awesome CS80 patch! Since the M6 has a mod matrix it has an edge over many synths of that time. Great demo!
This indeed does sounds better (more vintage 80's vibe) to my ears than the DS OB-6 you showcased! I had 6r once and sold it and now I regret it
I agree. In the name of OB. I would rather get a matrix 6 over ob 6 . I prefer the prophet over OB6
No
I used to own a Matrix-6 and regret selling it. This will sound (no pun intended) sacrilegious but I think the Moog filter is overhyped. The filter on this synth is way more gorgeous to my ears.
It's a question of personal taste. The Oberheim filter is warmer, softer, almost creamy. The Moog filter is more direct, in your face but can also sound bigger and more brutal. The same goes for the envelopes. The Moog ones are faster.
I'd prefer the Oberheim for softer, warmer sounds and the Moog for more extreme and lead sounds. Unfortunately, I don't own any of them. But it's always fun if I can get my hands on one.
I’ve owned this machine.
Sounds stunning and Crystal Clear.
Clean as Kawai K4 but with Analog VCO.
The Character is almost the same.
100%
"Discovered" one of these when clearing out the garage of my childhood home. It had sat in a flight case for 25 years as my dad had forgotten about it and assumed it was in storage somewhere else. A few dead keys but works just like new with a controller hooked up. From having spent years using VSTs, this one is actually really intuitive to program for me. Love this synth so much.
Those dead keys are easy to fix. I have this synth also. I love it!
That's Awesome!
0:50 Oh my gosh dude. That sound is so good.😳
Wow, same thing i said.
loved the erik satie!!
these old synths still carry that subtle magic (nostalgic feeling) that many of newer ones quite don't get it.
True and why is it difficult to re-release some of these gems? Or does the old tech development not exist anymore???
@@TheProdigyAccordion No demand, we the synthdrones, analog purists are drop in the bucket in the scope of things. Full featured Workstations rule the industry any day
This synth with knob-per-function would be awesome.
@@gunjabeans then it would have cost double or triple already. Luckily it will read sysex (if I am correct) to program your knob controller
That was true 10 years ago. Not now.
Love my Matrix 1000 too! Awesome sounds you captured here - and excellent playing!
fantastic sound coming out of this one. cool
Yeah, I absolutely love Oberheim synths. Distinctively 80's!
Eurythmics 1984 "For the Love of Big Brother'' check it out. Matrix-6 sounding chords, it's on YT.
I did some work on mine recently, cleaning the keypad contacts and used a bit of Deoxit on my Curtis chips. It's actually amazing how much better it sounds and plays. If you are willing to spend the time with it, it can reward you with very lush sounds. Usually, for leads, the Unison mode will give you your best results. I'll be selling mine soon, as I just own too many synths to deal with.
In the song "Edge of a Broken Heart", the Oberheim Matrix-6 patches "OBXA-D4" and "OBXA-C4" were heard.
Funny to read this today. I own the Matrix 6 bought from the band Vixen that was used on those recordings - it still sounds great.
In the Kids Incorporated versions of “Time Machine" and “Edge of a Broken Heart”, the Oberheim Matrix-6 patch "OBXA-C4" was heard.
this sounds bigger and badder then the OB6 demos I've heard!, didn't expect that
@2:49 - Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Sounds gorgeous. Arey of those sounds original presets or all your own? 1:34 Love that change in mood. Did you use reverb on these? Sometimes these old keyboards seem to have their own natural reverb somehow.
In the “Dress You Up”, the Oberheim Matrix-6 patch “Cancer/Camera 1” is heard.
Tame Impala (Kevin) uses the Oberheim Matrix 1000 a lot
a lot? I know there was one song, hadn't noticed it on others
hey man this sounds amazing. I would love to buy those patches, do you still have them? Cheers
This video got me into the Matrix 6. It's arriving in the mail today. Thank You!
So how do you like it?
@@FinSynthMusic Its only been a few months but im really happy with it. The oscillators just sound great. The bass on it is full and deep, does chords/pads reall well, and I can get a wide range of sounds on it from clean and simple classic ‘synth’ sounds to more modern feeling tones. The presets mine came with left much to be desired but it really shines when you program it (or upload sysex presets) It takes pedals and effects amazingly and I’ve only just started diving into programming with the mod matrix, and to me sets it apart from being just another 80s synth. The number input system isnt as quick as knobs and the wall of text can be intimidating but its pretty straightforward and i dont mind it as much now. Snappy/quick sounds aren’t it’s strong suit , the inverted pitch lever (down bends up, up bends down) was confusing at first but i prefer it now. The other day I noticed it kept skipping the 2nd or 3rd voice (was silent), I thought i had to get a new voice chip or something, I press the calibrate button turn it back on, problem fixed! Its the cheapest Oberheim you can get but it is not ‘cheap’ in sound or build quality. It’s already my favorite synth. If you have any specific questions about it, im happy to answer
Thanks for the video. Quick question: how did you manage to get a stereo sound?
By running it through a chorus and reverb
@@tritonrecordings thanks man, you're the best! It sound so subtle, didn't even notice the chorus. Just got myself Boss Dimension C and have hopes for preset #1
I love this synth
Me too. It is becoming one of my all time favorites. An OB8 would be better but...you know...
tritonrecordings OBX is the one. Or the new OB6.
Oberheim Matrix-6 is released in 1985-1989 and Oberheim Matrix-6R is released in 1986-1989.
Thanks.
@@kensmechanicalaffair you’re welcome.
Not quite as iconic as the dx7 and d50, but a great sounding synth. Born when digital was the new thing but clinging on to analog sound generators… but without all the hand on knobs which meant it was a nightmare to program
I’ve overlooked this synth mainly because it was a legit Oberheim that didn’t look like an Oberheim-that is to say-a massive control room thingy with dials and sliders UP DA WAZOOO!!!!!!!!! And a housing that you could drive a Buick through 😂
Sounds great! are these the factory patches?
Are these custom patches? Would you be willing to share them?
Sick patches
Just got a '1000 - love it! Waiting for new firmware and a StereoPing controller
I miss this synth so much !!
this is incredible...i have a Roland Juno-6 and Super JX-10 and debating if i should get a Matrix-6...often it reminds me of the JX-10 but with more bite like the Juno-6
I have a Juno-60, the Matrix-6, and more recently a Sequential Take 5 as my analog polyphonic arsenal. They each have a unique enough sound to justify.
This sound is so glorious.
Magical 🧙♀️
What preset banks are you using? any download for these great sounds ??
Great video, but there is NO WAY IN HECK that I'd give up my OB6 for a Matrix-6. Now an OB-X would be an entirely different story though. :)
Sean Christopher - Music to evoke emotion Okay I get it, I have an unpopular opinion. The OB6 just didn’t do it for me. There’s a certain sharpness and brass-ish sound to old oberheims and OB6 just didn’t do that well enough to pay the price. I’m not saying the Matrix is as good as a vintage OB model but it sounds closer to MY ear than the Dave Smith model. Even the DSI Prophet 6 smashes the OB6 in MY -opinion-.
Please don't get me wrong though, because the Matrix-6 does sound good to me, it's just that the lack of controls for editing would be sooo frustrating. I love tweaking my knobs. :)
I completely understand that sentiment. For me, it was about the sound and the OB6 seemed like the answer to my inability to afford an OBXa, but it just missed the mark. It's really not that bad to edit the Matrix 6. It's not as nice as knobs, but it's nowhere near as bad as the DX7. Also, Coffeeshopped makes an amazing iPad editor that works great in real time. Again, not knobs...but a happy medium.
@@tritonrecordings I use Midiquest pro it works amazing. Im not knocking the OB6 it sounds good though, it does not sound anything like an 80's Oberheim.
@@tritonrecordings I totally agree man. I bought an OB-6 (owned an OBX years ago) thinking it'd have the same sound with an easier interface, but the OB6 just has a different vibe and didn't sit as well in a mix. I actually prefer the Prophet 6 over the OB-6. It just "feels" better to me. You really can't beat the older OB stuff. Even the Matrix (6/1000). I sold the OB-6 and bought a Matrix and am much happier. A Matrix paired with a P6 is synth heaven.
whats the bit you play at 1:36, I know I've heard it before and I'm racking my brain as to what its from
killsalot78 erik satie gymnopedie 1
thank you!!!
Love this demo, thanks for sharing. Would it be possible to share your patches?
What processing is this going through? I think I hear some light reverb... is there chorus as well? If you're posting a YT video of a classic analog synth, imho you should *always* post your effect chain if one is being used....cheers -M
A bit of chorus and reverb from a Lexicon, as you've already suspected.
Didn't know there were rules. Although your suggestion is helpful, if you knew about the synth you would already know that there are NO effects built in this machine. Peace!
@@saxmidiman I'm fully aware it has no effects built in, that's precisely why I'm asking what effects were used to make this video. It's not a very accurate representation of the sound of the synth itself if it's passing through additional effects and we aren't told what they are. Thanks.
@@deadwhenifoundher Synths aren't meant to be played dry! That's like saying you're not accurately representing a steak if you put salt and pepper on it. I prefer demos that showcase synths the way I'd use them in a mix; with reverb and chorus/delay. As long as it's tasteful and not making the effects the focus, it really helps showcase the sound.
@@lifescansdarkly Synths are played dry all the time....
Got into this synth because of Lorn
I remember seeing lorn pop up in this subreddit about him where he was answering a bunch of questions from people about equipment and processes. By the time I had enough money saved up to get anything- he had taken it down/deleted everything he said..prolly bc some people were making music and posting it on RUclips under his name...
I had looked this up and saved this video on a playlist and it’s now the only thing I remember from that ama.
My point is..Do you know anything about the equipment he uses or have any links to direct me to find out more about it? I love the way he creates soundscapes.. it’s super inspiring.

I'm selling my Matrix 6 Oberheim and I also purchased the ObiMagiX6000 to make changes on the fly without having to menu dive. She's like new and has been gone over by my synth tech. The ObiMagiX6000 is about 1 year old and was the smartest thing I ever did for using this Oberheim to its fullest.

Does the newer OB-6 require "serious maintenance?" I hadn't heard that
No, the OB6 isn’t ≈40 years old lol
please can u give me the name of the piece at 3.41????thanx!!
Geddy Lee and Rush in general used Oberheim and Moog alone for years. Basically up until Grace under Pressure. He still used Oberheim, the OB-XA and Moog, however he started messing with Rolands and Yamahas also starting at that time. Geddy also stopped using his Rickenbacker and Jazz at that same time. Their sound changed so dramatically that it threw a lot of Rush lovers for a loop. Their heavey guitar through Marshall's and HiWatts and Geddy's Grindy and Gritty sound was no longer present. Oh well. I wish Oberheim would have included a Rush Patch or two in there! Tom Sayer, Subdivisions, Analog kid.
Yeah, and don't forget he had the PPG was used extensively from Grace Under Pressure through Hold Your Fire.
@SacredSolfeggio You are correct. As a Rush fanatic, I hate to admit that once they lost their Power sound, Ged stopped using his Rickenbacker and Jazz, Alex lost the Meat and Bones of his sound, they decided to stop working with the 4th member of Rush, (Terry Brown) and went way overboard with a synth sound, I just couldn't handle the period from Grace Under Pressure through Hold your Fire and A Show of Hands. I liked their songs a little more starting at Presto and Roll the Bones, but Ged still played that Wal bass (which sounded like a chicken bock-ing (i.e. Bock, Bock, Bock). No bass, no overdriven grinding tone of the Ricky and Alex using Gallian Kruger amps and the ball less, bass less sound of single coil sounding pickups in those Signature guitars. Not necessarily bad writing or bad songs, just a major loss of the powerful and unapologetically harder edge and swagger sound of youth that brought them the success they had worked so hard to achieve. I don't mind people (bands) growing and exploring to try a different way. It's when you have gained a following by sounding like an unstoppable freight train. You sound like a more intelligent and more refined Motorhead up to one album. The next album you release sounds more like Duran Duran melding with Abba. I know, It wasn't as harsh of a change as I make it sound. However to a musician who was so influenced by the power and Intercasses of these 3 extraordinary musicians, it just seemed like I was listening to 2 different bands.
Wow, I just slipped into a rabbit hole, didn't I?
3:55 it says 74 echotron I think. Holy crap that tone will blow you away. Unbelievable.
Sorry I'm late, but I actually used that sound in a track my band did! Look up "What I Would Do to You" by Funayurei. You'll know it when you hear it!
@@tritonrecordings great track. Although I do wish the tone was a bit more prominent in it given how powerful sounding it can be.
are these factory patches??
Seems to be the synthesizer for the tekken 2 soundtrack and others.
What is the sound at 0:54?????
What is that glide/hangtime?
1:37 - Tres Gymnopedes
your sound is pure love. thank you.
"Before anyone asks, yes - I would take this over the disappointing Dave Smith OB-6."
I happen to own both, and let me tell you that the Matrix-6 doesn't even come close to an OB-6. Its filters are very "Curtis" sounding. The OB-6's filters are smoother, much closer to an "SEM".
Cool. I just don't like it.
I do like the Prophet 6 though. The OB-6 just didn't do it for me.
Yes, the Prophet 6 does sound nice, too. The Matrix-6 never quite did it for me though. And to say nothing of its dreadful editing, without even a single slider for data entry ! What were they thinking back then ? But I must admit that with your careful programming, it sounds relatively good here (with a little help from great external effects). Thanks for sharing.
AlainHubert Yeah, the OB6 sounds fine on its own, but doesn't hold up to an original OB in my personal opinion. The Matrix gets closer. By itself though, the OB6 does sound better. But just a bit of chorus or reverb really helps the matrix. The Prophet 6 on the other hand does live up to the name a bit more.
On the fact that the OB6 isn't an Oberheim OB-X or FVS or TV, I agree 100% with you. It might be derived from a SEM based polysynth, but it's not quite a SEM based polysynth. The Matrix-6 is...a Matrix-6, not really a genuine Oberheim synth either, IMHO, (probably because of those Curtis filters). Much like the OB-Xa and OB-8 were not an OB-X (again because of those Curtis filters). Did I mention that I don't like the sound of Curtis filters ? lol !
4:26 !!!!!!!!!!
Wish list.
CARMEN!
is there another way of programming these either a programmer or midi?
I use an iPad app called Patch Base made by Coffeeshopped. He has templates for this and many other synths.
is that "Never Matter" by Toro y Moi @ 2:39-2:50 ??
Luna Campos it's "Summer Love" by Trevor Something. But you're actually not the first to point that out - I play that same riff on my video for the Korg Minilogue and someone said the same thing! I'll just not play that riff anymore, haha.
tritonrecordings omg lol, I like the riff though lolol
Luna Campos you might like that song then, haha. It's on RUclips. It's on Trevor Something's first EP "Trevor Something Does Not Exist."
Awesome!
OB6 sounds much nicer. Based on SEM, which is the classic OB tone. The Matrix, OBXA, & OBA are curtis based, and not classic Oberheim.
Nah man ob8 > ob6.

What song/chord progression is that at 3:40? I think I have heard Ujie play that before.
I've never gotten face to face with the new OB6, but I picked up a Matrix 6 about 2 years ago on ebay for a little over $500. Sadly my OB-Xa died long ago :( so the Matrix was the next best thing for me. There's just something about the fizz in those filters that define the Oberheim sound for me. I know it sounds like a cliche' when describing them, but thick and warm sounding tones are what these old analogs are all about.
Beside the OB6 being super expensive, I was very disappointed that they didn't put levers on it and just used the generic pitch and mod wheels. Besides "THE sound" of any vintage analog Obie, a big part of playing one is the performance control of those levers! Pitch bends are far more intuitive. Sure Mod wheels don't zero-back like a lever does, but an expression pedal works just as well.
Not sure yet what to make of the new Prophet X, but the Korg Prologue16 (with the extra bass compressor) is pretty sweet.
ruclips.net/video/KlaGeJs4LSs/видео.html
The analog filters in the 16 sound more Oberheim than anything I've heard from an OB6 review. From the opening of this demo, the 16 sounds like a cross between an old Oberheim and a CS-80. A buddy of mine has the Prologue 16 and it's tone is a dream!
Dennis Ristow The OB6 was just a huge disappointment. I get closer to the OB sound with the Matrix, just my personal opinion that plenty are sure to disagree with. I can’t get behind the Prophet X. It’s a lot of money for something I could get out of Omnisphere.
tritonrecordings huge disappointment?? It’s based on the SEM, unlike the matrix which is curtis based.
Dennis Ristow OB6 would have cost $6,000 in 1983 dollars. So $3,000 in 2019 is VERY reasonable.
Plus, it blows away the Prologue sonically and in build quality.
@@SPAZZOID100 Why do you get triggered over something that's purely a matter of taste?

Oberheim a place above, heaven!
Agreed! I adore the sound of Oberheim.
This or the JX3P? Or Juno 60??
Nihil & Void Matrix is my favorite but it's a close tie with the Juno 60, which is my favorite Roland.
Juno-60 has much better filters, and sounds very round, but isn´t as versatile as the Matrix-6. I find myself reaching for the Juno-60 more often than the Matrix... probably also because of that great interface (which matters alot in everyday recording).
If you like to "tweak", the Matrix6 is the obvious choice. If you are the type of musician who doesn't like to get "hung up" in the programming, the Rolands you mentioned are better for that type of person. But the truth is, as in all things gearhead oriented, get 'em ALL!!!
Matrix-6 is pretty harsh sounding compared to an OB-6. The OB-6 is a far better synth in terms of sound quality than the Matrix
I consider them entirely different synths.
I am going to disagree with you there, The OB-6 sounds thin and has a midrange harmonic that lacks the overall lushness the Matrix has. i.e CEM3396
