First Time Backcountry Camping in Algonquin Park!

- Our first time backcountry camping together was along the Western Uplands Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park. Situated in central Ontario, the park is well known for clean freshwater lakes, portaging trails (hiking and canoeing), and difficult backcountry hiking trails. We only took on the first loop on the trail, and it was a seriously challenging feat. Beyond just the hiking, we had to hang our food from the black bears that call the park home, set up our tent, cook in the bush, and hide from the mosquitos...

The nicest couple in Algonquin Park .
I'm glad Mr.Bear stayed away ) 🐻
“Some mushrooms are only edible once.” I love that
So nice to see you discovering Algonquin Park, a real treasure. I have many happy memories of canoe trips in the interior. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. If you enjoyed Algonquin Park you should have a go at Temagami some time. A bit wilder, less traffic. Just as beautiful in a different way.
We had a wonderful time, it's such a beautiful park! We're hoping to return in the fall. Temagami would be amazing! We had some friends growing up that would go every year and rave about it! It's amazing how unique each place is
RUclips recommended your channel... what a great find! Absolutely love it! :)
Your camspite tour was hilarious and awesome!
Very well done! I enjoyed this video! I'll be watching for the next one! Great tour.
Thank you! Things get a lot more difficult in the next one 🙈
It looks too adventurous I'm dying to camp outside and by seeing it made me go and have fun but it's dangerous outside but as soon covid
will over i will surely go for trip.
Thanks for your effort .
Be healthy and safe.
Thanks for watching! We're hoping that COVID gets better around the world soon so the world can heal
Hey where do you go for camping
0:52 and beyond: “Darn skeeters!” My father-in-law would say.
Basically what we said all week! Still so much fun!
Incredible channel, you guys! Fellow Canadian youtuber and just found your content. Love the creativity...
Thanks for watching!
So stoked that you went for it and got out I,m sure you learned a lot hope you go again
Thats certainly a couple of extra things to deal with that are not for the faint hearted... Bears and mosquitos! 😵
No kidding! We had much closer encounters with bears in more recent videos
I went to Algonquin once had to portage over 10 beaver dams, those things are very hard workers
😂 yes they are!
Great video!! :D
Good to see u again ...love from india ❤️❤️❤️... ofcourse good vlog.😍
Thank you! Love from Canada!
I didn’t know you guys made videos! Looks like a binge watching session is in order. Onto part two! Keep it up!
Hey Matt! Started making these about a year ago... we took a few tips from your Algonquin show!
Rich and Kirsten Nice! Camping is a whole different (and difficult) world. It looks like you have been to some awesome places around the world so far. Looking forward to the van trip!
Wow really love all of your graphics! Makes it super extra engaging! Thanks for taking us with you! Looked liked such a blast! Watched your whole video to support
Really appreciate the support as always! 🙏
@@RichandKirsten No Problem! Hope you guys can share the love too!
Great stuff.
Thanks for watching!
Rich, get two ropes and a pulley from the hardware store, and a gravity works water filter
Soo lovely couple you both are❤ though you are attacked by mosquitoes you never became discouraged.. Wow 😲 what a passion😮 you are handling your tough situations with great smile😊.. Keep going..
We do our best to stay positive! Bugs and all... this trip was really a blast. We like to push our limits... it's fun!
Great job, guys
Thank you! 🙏
Mosquitoes are really bad this year in northern Michigan . Be safe and hold tight to those backpacks so those buzzing ba$^@#ds can't carry you off.
It felt like they were gonna carry us off! LOL the bugs are much worse than usual here this year too!
Nice video. Glad you folks got out there, hope you go backcountry camping again. Maybe not in June again specially without a bug net jacket. What were you thinking? It was a bit painful to see more and more bites on Kirsten's face as the video progressed.
Where did you park the car and can you tell where the trail start
Love your videos
ohh canada i love this park
It is so pretty
Oh my gosh I hate hanging the foodbag. I always end up standing in moose pooh in the semi-dark trying to get that done. Upcoming trip will be my first with a bear cannister. My days of hanging are over.
Bug jacket. Worth the investment:)
No kidding! We are gonna buy one for our next backcountry trip
Loved this video. Did you guys already have the camping gear or have you bought it expecting to do more camping with everything that's going on? Watching you guys make many attempts to get the rope over the branch brought back such fond memories of my time in north America - we don't have bears in the UK so we never need to do this here! Looking forward to the next video, even though it looks like it's a bit brutal on you guys!
We did buy all of the gear new (although most of it was 40% off... that's our style) with the intent of using it a bunch more this summer. We're planning a huge adventure right now, gonna announce it as soon as we fix up some moving parts... 😏
@@RichandKirsten Nice one for getting 40% off. Even if it was full price, it sounds like a good investment given everything that's going on in the world! So pleased to hear you guys are still adventure-ing. If you're travelling Canada, I have a lot of love for Nova Scotia 🥰I'd love to see vlogs from there... not trying to sway you or anything 😉🤣
That was actually top on our list... the borders are closed to the eastern provinces right now though so that’s seeming like a fall trip. It’s coming though, promise!!
This makes me very happy! Cape Breton is a must and I'd highly recommend the Skyline Trail. Rangers told us it's the best place to spot moose as they're used to people on the trail so don't run away. Middle head trail is also beautiful. On the mainland there's there's Peggy's Cove, not a lot to do but lovely to sit and take it in (sun set is wonderful). I loved Kejimkujik sea shore - white sands and turquoise waters, nice trail to get to it. Whilst I'd recommend Jo Ann's Deli Market (Mahone Bay) for lunch anyway - in the autumn it's particularly special with pumpkins lining the roof. Just giving these recommendations is making me want to go back... and I've done Nova Scotia twice!! I hope they open up the borders in time for your plans to still go ahead!
Oh nice this is the trail me and my mom went on but we went to maple leaf lake
What was that wood box at the first site? I tried looking it up
The thunder box? It’s basically an outhouse
well, you got one thing wrong, it's "mrs mosquito", only the female ones bite. great video, great trip, always good to see some outdoor when i am trapped indoor.
Hahaha, that is true! They're nasty little things lol. Thanks for watching!
Kirsten is a babe your one lucky guy!
You beat me to it I wanted to do that trail in April but it was closed due to the coronavirus
Too bad, spring would be such a nice time to hike it if the rains would hold off. June had a ton of bugs, but the park is still beautiful!
Parks and forests are such a huge threat from the cold bug. 😁
Great vlog and video quality are excellent. What video camera you use?
Thanks! We use a Sony A7iii
You two look adorable together❤️
Why would a bear climb a tree when two meals are in a tent?
😂 nice 👍
Just a tip but if you were crossing actual deep water you would want your pack unbuckled in case you slip. That pack will drag you down.
haha yes, the mosquitos are indeed vicious in Algonquin.
Even in late September/October?
I bought the wrong spray once. I picked up "On".
Pretty sure you book individual campsites for the hiking ones.. you two just decided to pick another one?
Hi William! We booked the campsite ex. Maggie Lake, we wanted to stay at each night and stay at the one we selected. You just don’t pick what tent site you stay at, Maggie 1, Maggie 2 etc.
@@RichandKirsten ah ok, thanks
Hi Thanks for the video!! Me and my partner live in Toronto and we love camping. But all the provincial park camp grounds are fully booked! How does backcountry camping work? Should we get a permit? Did u guys get it way before this pandemic?☺
We actually booked only a few days before going! Backcountry doesn’t seem as popular because it involves hiking into the camp site. Reservations can be made online on the Algonquin Park website!
@@RichandKirsten Thank you! Keep update your camping videos please. Torontonian campers need you guys! It's hard to find a good videos about Southern Ontario parks. We look forward to watching another camping videos😊
We’ve got some camping in Tobermory coming up this week! And then some more in Northern Ontario coming later in the summer. Stay tuned!
So I love upper Westlands I have done all the loops multiple times Just a little comment, Kirsten has a bag hanging off the back of her pack, that is putting alot of stress on her
Hi Thomas! We actually hung our sleeping bags off the back of our backpacks so it wasn’t too strenuous! We did learn a ton hiking in Algonquin though and want to go back in the fall
@@RichandKirsten next time try putting your bags closer to your body and higher up, it will help the load transfer to your body and reduce a push pull effect as you hike Your video inspired me I dragged all my gear out and started getting it prepared for a trip. PS on maggie lake I think on the sight you were on there is a small island just off shore I would swim out with my campers to pick blueberries They were the best!
That’s awesome! Summer camping is great when you can take a dip in the lake! There are two camp sites on the island across from the one we stayed at, they’re available by canoe access!
Sry but What da hekk is that 10:45 😂😂
Edit: good video though
Lol Borat!
You sang to the wrong mosquito. It is the Mrs. Mosquito that bites. LOL. You only sang for Mr. to leave you alone.
Hahaha darnit that’s why it didn’t work! 😂
Where is the washroom?
You know where the washroom is Tony! 🙈
Just a question, how did you charge your camera gear while on the trial?
Great question! We carry two batteries at full charge to start and a 8Ah portable battery pack which was sufficient for the days we were hiking. We’ve since upgraded to a 20Ah battery pack which is more sufficient for our needs now. The Sony’s have pretty poor battery life, only getting about 600 shots per battery, so with other cameras you might not have as big of an issue
@@RichandKirsten great to know! I am hoping to hike the La Clouche Silhouette trail in Killarney, ON this summer and planning to document the trip but am still figuring out the logistics on how to keep my GoPro alive for my 8 day trek. Thanks for your insight!
That’s awesome! It’s such a beautiful part of Ontario!
Some say one has to be thick skinned to survive in a big city. Seems it's true for Nature too 🐞🤦
No kidding! You need some thick clothing to survive the bugs too
Dark blue clothes are worst colour for bugs
We learned the hard way!
