  • Starting work on the moose hide tanning process. Taking all the flesh, fat and hair off of the hide. Scraping then to thin it down. Stretching on the stretcher frame. This is my first time attempting to tan a moose hide, so this is not a tutorial at this point, but more of a document of my progress.

    The best thing about learning, you get to learn. I've never scrapped a frozen hide, really curious about that. I've always scrapped mine wet. As with dehairing a hide, have always soaked mine for a few days before I try any of that the hair, usually, just falls right off at that point. Of course it doesn't get quite that cold around here . Doing a great job, and it gives you an appreciation that a lot of people don't have. Because that whole process isn't easy and it takes a good amount of time and effort. Now that you have it dehaired and scrapped now the hard part starts. working that huge piece of hide to soften it up.

      Thanks ! Me too ... not sure yet. Maybe moccassins or mittens. Or maybe I will just want to keep it ''uncut'' and admire my hardworks lol. So much work, but rewarding as well. Thank you for watching ! Steve

    The easiest way is. Modern Native way. The way I was taught was…
    Take the whole hide and place it into a 59 gal blue plastic drum. Fill the drum until it’s a foot from the top then put 3-5 cups of lye in the water. Take a long stick and mix the whole things up. Make sure you flip the hide around while mixing in the drum. Then cover for a 4-7 days, mix it once a day. Then stretch and scrap.

      @@NomadicWoodsman That's cool. That gives you many options. My steer hide I cut a piece off and soaked to make rawhide lacing for snowshoe repairs. Going to do that project soon. The balance I bark tanned into straps for my ash adirondack pack baskets. I still have half of it left , lol. I have a calf skin of rawhide I might use for lacing cause the steer hide is so thick the lacings come out more rectagular in cross section and are a bitch to cut. I've never tried to do a video of any of this so I'm glad you did.

    A big rubbermaid trash can works good or 50 gallon drum. I use wood ash (lye) to loosen the hair. You probably already know that. I've done a steer hide and a cow hide. If you let it dry out it will shrink and bust the frame or break the ropes.

      How long do you leave it in the ash ? and how much ash vs. amount of water ? I heard about it but never tried it myself. Thanks !!

      @@NomadicWoodsman As much as you can mix in. There never too much. I've seen other videos where they scraped like you did so maybe it don't work on moose? Usually with a deer skin it takes about a week. I use a fleshing beam ( a log ) propped up about 45% and a drawknive to scrape the flesh side first. If you don't it's a nasty mess when you pull it out of the ash bath. It's pretty bad with just the ash but the fur just peels right off. I got a cow hide froze out back from an old cow I had to put down that I'm going to do next. The ash thing worked well on the steer hide I did a couple years back. I'm going to strecth it and thin like you did. With my deer hides I stretch them after cleaning the two sides and put on the brain tan solution and use a round end stick , like a shovel handle and push the stick against the stretched hide to stretch the fibers. It will go from a translucent to white and much softer. It will get loose on the frame and some of the strings will break but it's much easier way to soften than working it over a pole. That kills your hands real quick. Then I smoke them. That's what really cures it. I don't use real brains anymore although I have before. Sorry for the long reply , good luck. LOOKS Great

    how about using a sheep cutting machine..., not possible?

  • @kimrathier1718

    Pour enlever les poiles plus facilement tu peut tremper la peau dans une mixture d’eau et cendre, sa devient du “lye”, je sais pas c’est quoi en français, et le poile va s’enlever très facilement.

    • @NomadicWoodsman
      @NomadicWoodsman  3 года назад

      Oh oui, combien de temps faut tremper la dedans ?

    • @kimrathier1718
      @kimrathier1718 3 года назад +1

      Je pense que 24 hrs serait suffisant. Vérifie après 24 hrs. pis si sa s’enlève pas juste avec les mains remet le dans la solution. Assure toi de porter des lunette et des gants.
