I'm just kind of confused with this one. They asked for minimalist, and then every critique seems essentially that it's too little. Like too much space, not enough content
The first image seems like a great use of minimalism in landscape. They even mention that and then critique it for it's minimal quality. If it had lots of clouds every where or a higher horizon line it wouldn't feel minimal anymore. I think the broad, blankness of the sky makes it feel more graphic, and the highlight on the mountain looks natural and functions well because it's the focal point of the image: the tip of the mountain. I think it's great
One thing I would recommend is to let the photographers explain their images in 1 or 2 sentences before each image to avoid a lot of this confusion and questioning.
Fstoppers More of a description of how the shot was taken instead of what it means. So many times the question comes up, "how did you take this?" I.e if there was any compositing
I don’t summit, but, I love the longer videos from you guys. The discussion and the fact you guys move onto different images keep the video engaging and the longer duration make sense, worthwhile and relevant, compared to other creators who are creating longer videos with out as much substance for the view time.
Regarding the snake picture - that looks quite natural to me, long lens, low vantage point - and it's a superb wildlife shot all by itself. And the next photo shows the mounds that will be created in saltworks for example in the Mediterranean coast...
noooo keep the long format videos. Love putting this on when im working on my photos and just chilling watching and listening to you guys. In the world of podcasts we need more long format videos.
I prefer 45 minute or longer videos. Let's me relax, really immerse myself into the experience, the editing and pace doesn't feel rushed and fills up my lunch break nicely.
Thanks for the kind words about my sunglasses shot you two! I'll head back in and touch up the edges. (Fun fact, I'm also the dude with the controversial Cheetah photo from 2 weeks ago XD)
Connor Moriarty So what was the case with your cheetah dude? Was it photoshop :Dd It made a good first impression, but this sunglass one I still love after looking for a while
Veltto123 thanks dude! Yeah there’s a whole comment thread on that other video, but no it’s not photoshopped. I added motion blur, but it’s a real cheetah running.
Oh my god I was literally just watching again that cheetah critique cause it was just so funny! The sunglasses shot was my favourite. The best so far in this critique, just my opinion.
I like all 20. its almost like watching a tv show. I dont mind the length. I dont submit but still enjoy these. and this is coming from a person who gets bored VERY EASILY. so good content guys!
I would like to see the people complaining, make a RUclips video like this... I bet people will have something to say... Great videos FStoppers, the length is great!
the “sandcastle” at 9min30 are actually mountains of Salt on the caribbean island of Bonaire. the image does not really do them justice.. but if you know what it is it does look better.
I haven't submitted a photo yet and recently started watching your channel but I believe the whole idea behind the critique is for people to get objective feedback on their work,
Plus one to the 20 thing. It is nice that this are large episodes. It is a thing in itself. 15 minutes of this would be more like a regular youtube video, one among millions =)
I prefer 20 too, and I'm not even photographer, just enjoying viewing these photos :D I like longer videos once in a while, and these videos aren't daily, so it fits my needs
Not sure why this is not highly viewed, and thumbed up, however, I find this critique-vid fascinating. I therefore propose a third option over the ten or twenty.......lets go for 30!
Love these videos thank you. Would like to see one compiled with the new film craze that is going on. A lot of people seem to be shooting houses small sections of a car on the street even just shopping carts. Not sure what to call it myself but some do look interesting. Urban exploration??
20 is a great length to see a nice variety of images. And while I've not watched all of the critiques,, do you ever have women photographers as guests? Or a person of color? We would all benefit from the different perspective, expertise, and experience they would bring to the conversation. Please consider that for future episodes.
I've watched a few of your critiques; they are interesting viewpoints. Are you, and whomever your guest is for each critique episode, considered experts for that particular style? or is it more opinion as professionals?
10:46 I'm pretty sure those are piles of salt ... probably from some flor de sal producer at some shore in southern europe but it could also be plaster (gypsum) from sulfur removal of a coal power station (but those would be inside a huge hall)
In the bridge bowing photo, I feel like the drone is off centered with the middle of the bridge. If you add the fact that the bowing seems to be happening because of the rise and fall of the bridge, I think centering with the bridge would make the shape more appealing .
You got it when you said some are gonna want it and some won't. Here is the best of both worlds. How about doing a 15mins montage of all the reviews and attaching it to the end of the video so people who want a shorter watch can click a card and jump to the shorter version of CTC?
I like 20 photos, and I don't submit photos. It's a great way to learn more about photography, different than a tutorial. Plus it's easy to skip to the next image if I want to
The best advice, is don't do photography to attempt to impress other photographers. It's the same in any art form. If you're creating music with impressing other musicians in mind, you are selling yourself, and the music short. Photography is no different. Edit: Tommy Emmanuel said: "I don't write songs to try and impress other guitarists. I feel like I have a higher calling than that." Take your photographs with the same thought.
for the 50th time Lee says: "You know, it's really hard to judge the image because we have small low res files and we are viewing it on tablet." Why don't you ask for the high res file and view it on a computer?! Anyone, ha? Doesn't that solve it? You are criticizing and you keep saying that you can't do what the video title says because you did not prepare beforehand?!
I see many websites that do not even allow you to upload if the system reads it under the target resolution like business printing websites. BTW, nice beauty glowing shot Patrick! Who took that?
I feel like the last shot was composited ( picture of water and then the feather on a mirror ) because the reflection is way too perfect for how ripply the rest of the water is and around the feather is completely flat water but it shouldn't be. Also stick with 20 ... Everyone has the option to watch is 1.5x speed if it's too long
The videos are good just as is but the only suggestion I have would be to look into improving the rating system. it'd be amazing to see you recreate some of the pictures that are only 2 or 3 stars.
I'm not sure how we would do that. If we gave an image a 2 because the location wasn't that interesting then recreating the photo would require a completely new location. Or say the model doesn't look professional enough for your portfolio, that image would be a totally different image.
I got some questions to really understand what your critique is all about. What is a good photo? What is a quality photo? What is in fact a photo? Some times (many times) you contradict your selves. You should rate the photos by what you see. Your first impresion about the subject. What feelings you feel. Great photos have nothing to do with high resolution. Have nothing to do with pixel quantity. Good photos are like poetry. You feel! About sharpness and quality: D-Day, Militian Shot, Girl and the dog shot in Budapest. All by Robert Capa. The terror of War by Nick Ut. Tank man by Jeff Widner. Falling man by Richard Drew. Francesca Woodman master of blured photography and even Cartier Bresson Master of composition and decisive moment had blur elements in his work. Claude Monet paint in blur. But no one needs to be an inch to see a good photo. You dont need to print large. Most iconic photos of all time are small prints. You cant go one a paper or a print and enlarge. So avoid to do that on your critiques. You are way technicale. Judge a photo by being a photo. I remember that one of you rated an Elias photo about a sunset in Italy and without known that was his photo your rating was way diferent. Photos doesnt have persons names. Photos have emotions and that what makes a great photo all the rest comes after. Some where in this critique you call a photographer an artist. But in another discusion you also said that a photographer are not an artist. A photographer is a photographer... If he became an artist looses is hability of craft and instant creactivity. He becomes an artist whom goal is to make a portfolio that sells. Some great (most) artists, painters, compositors never got reach because to understand art some times take time.
the longer the better (we can always cut our viewing short). But watch episode 34 again and figure out how you got it so perfect. Maybe cut out nap times.
Prefer 20, long is good. I don’t submit but really enjoy these.
I'm just kind of confused with this one. They asked for minimalist, and then every critique seems essentially that it's too little. Like too much space, not enough content
We like 20.
when you set the category, please judge the photo by the category you set.
Amen.
seriously. they ask for minimalism and then judge everything as if it shouldn’t be
was going to comment the same. several lovley minimal images and they go (i want more from this or the subject har no interest) -.-''
lmao true, it seems they don't like minimalist photography and are judging based on their subjective taste
They did the same with the phone-images
Keep them long they are a great learning tool, for all of us
The first image seems like a great use of minimalism in landscape. I think it's great
I prefer 20 personally and I don't submit, but I imagine rendering sucks more so you guys be you, it's good either way.
I second that. I like the 20 even though I don't submit either. I really enjoy these.
I don’t submit photos but love the long form videos you guys do. Just my opinion but I would love to see you guys stick with 20
One thing I would recommend is to let the photographers explain their images in 1 or 2 sentences before each image to avoid a lot of this confusion and questioning.
I like this quote "a photo that needs explaining is a photo not worth taking" :)
Fstoppers More of a description of how the shot was taken instead of what it means. So many times the question comes up, "how did you take this?" I.e if there was any compositing
20 - thank you!
Longer is better!!
I don’t summit, but, I love the longer videos from you guys. The discussion and the fact you guys move onto different images keep the video engaging and the longer duration make sense, worthwhile and relevant, compared to other creators who are creating longer videos with out as much substance for the view time.
Keep it at 20! The videos aren't too long and they are informational and interesting to watch
I love 20. I don’t mind watching you guys for 40-60 minutes. I very much appreciate the honesty and ACTUAL critiques y’all give!
Keep this lenght :D Love it !
Long videos because it helps to have the 20 images because we can see many examples of what to do and what not to do.
I like 20
20 please. I am learning so much
Please stay with 20. More would be great. An hour isn’t too long for this content.
I feel like the first photo is such a rare landscape image and so refreshing. Loved it
Regarding the snake picture - that looks quite natural to me, long lens, low vantage point - and it's a superb wildlife shot all by itself. And the next photo shows the mounds that will be created in saltworks for example in the Mediterranean coast...
20 is perfect
noooo keep the long format videos. Love putting this on when im working on my photos and just chilling watching and listening to you guys. In the world of podcasts we need more long format videos.
Keep the length please
I prefer 45 minute or longer videos. Let's me relax, really immerse myself into the experience, the editing and pace doesn't feel rushed and fills up my lunch break nicely.
Keep doing 20 photos. I learn so much and I don't mind spending 40mins to an hour watching it.
Thanks for the kind words about my sunglasses shot you two! I'll head back in and touch up the edges. (Fun fact, I'm also the dude with the controversial Cheetah photo from 2 weeks ago XD)

The sunglasses shot was my favourite. The best so far in this critique, just my opinion.
Catrinel Toncu thanks my friend!
Yours got my vote to win...and you should have with 4 stars!!!
I think you should keep it to 20 photos. I don't submit photos but I've been thinking to do so.
VIEWERS, stop disliking these videos, come on.
This format is great.
(I like 20)
Honestly, the more the better. I enjoy these.
I like the longer videos... these critique the community videos are my favorite!
That spider shot looked really good in my opinion, I think it perfectly nails "minimalistic" as a requirement
Love all 20!! These are my favorite, I love to see what you think of everyone's photos!
20 is perfect. 45 minutes per vid feels pefect. Cheers!
prefer 20
guys i love the 20 images, i watch bits of these critiques until i finish them.
the “sandcastle” at 9min30 are actually mountains of Salt on the caribbean island of Bonaire. the image does not really do them justice.. but if you know what it is it does look better.
Mark den Hartog I thought the same thing. They could’ve photographed it a tad bit better. Maybe add the splash of pink next to it. Or something
Nooo I love these long videos!!!!!! Never change 😊
Keep the current format. I don’t submit but enjoy the length of show - it’s perfect for my commute.
Do 10 when your guest is Peter Hurley, 20 for others.
mavfan1 😂
Hahaha, fair enough
I haven't submitted a photo yet and recently started watching your channel but I believe the whole idea behind the critique is for people to get objective feedback on their work,
I like 20. You get a wider range of photography.
I like the 20. I usually watch all the way through its great.
I see bridge is an arch bridge and IS 'bowed' and taken just a bit off from being over center of the span.
Please keep the long videos!!! It’s super helpful for learning!
Much better critiquing Lee. Milder. And I've never yet added a photo but I like the 20. I'd like 30 even more 😁. Nice work guys.
20
Plus one to the 20 thing.
It is nice that this are large episodes. It is a thing in itself. 15 minutes of this would be more like a regular youtube video, one among millions =)
20 is the best number, in my opinion, I like the length of the videos.
I prefer 20 too, and I'm not even photographer, just enjoying viewing these photos :D I like longer videos once in a while, and these videos aren't daily, so it fits my needs
I don't submit, at present anyway, but love the program. It's a great learning tool and I like the longer format too. Thanks!

sunglass picture was clearly the best, minimalist as required but with character
20 is good
i love these videos, keep them going !
Love the long format!
I am amateur, but learning a lot from this critiques, so I enjoy a lot the longer videos, even if I am not posting;
i preffer 20 pics
every minute is well spent. Stick to 20!
What's the message about racism in the reptile-plant photo?
Remember, you can always set the speed to 1.25x or 1.5x if you feel like the videos are "too long".
10:46 I'm pretty sure those are piles of salt ... probably from some flor de sal producer at some shore in southern europe
but it could also be plaster (gypsum) from sulfur removal of a coal power station (but those would be inside a huge hall)
“i want the sex appeal outta that snake”
Keep it long, I haven't submitted might in the future tho, but I really enjoy watching the whole thing.
20 is good, love a nice long vid to get in to.

Do they pick the best photos submitted? If nothing i wish your would Lee and Patrick.
Keep the videos long. I really enjoy watching them in bed at night.
I like 20 photos, and I don't submit photos. It's a great way to learn more about photography, different than a tutorial. Plus it's easy to skip to the next image if I want to
+1 for twenty. Don't ruin the atmosphere you have in the show. Long videos rock!
The best advice, is don't do photography to attempt to impress other photographers. It's the same in any art form. If you're creating music with impressing other musicians in mind, you are selling yourself, and the music short. Photography is no different.

kharChehre we pull the highest res images that are uploaded. People just need to upload higher res images in the first place
I see many websites that do not even allow you to upload if the system reads it under the target resolution like business printing websites. BTW, nice beauty glowing shot Patrick! Who took that?
20 please! - I know it's long to you, but we dig the variety and pain you sometimes suffer through. ;)
more the better!
Keep it long, guys!
Do not submit, but definitely continue with 20.
Keep it at 20.
Please do a critique for maternity or newborn photography
I feel like the last shot was composited ( picture of water and then the feather on a mirror ) because the reflection is way too perfect for how ripply the rest of the water is and around the feather is completely flat water but it shouldn't be. How about 16 or 22? It would be like saying f16 or f22. :)
20 Photos is Nice. I can just relax during it.... If it’s not too much work for you...
More is more - I prefer 20.
The snake DOF is fake. Appears as though zero grass is in the same plane as the snake.
I love 20 photos

jack of all trades (and master of none).
20 is better!
20... I don`t submit, but I`m watching it in small window wile working, and it's kind like podcast or something like that to me. So longer, better.
20 - cheers
