  • The birth of Benjamin Thomas Gobrecht defied both expectation and imagination: his mother, 33-year-old Jennifer Gobrecht, was born without a uterus. Benjamin, who arrived in November 2019 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, grew inside a womb Jennifer received as part of an organ transplant research trial over a year earlier. Benjamin is the first baby born as part of Penn Medicine’s Uterus Transplantation for Uterine Factor Infertility (UNTIL) trial, which launched in 2017. He is the second baby in the nation to be born following the transplantation of a uterus from a deceased donor.
    Jen was born with a congenital condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which means she has functional ovaries but does not have a fully formed uterus. MRKH affects approximately 1 out of every 4,500 females and makes it impossible for women to get pregnant or carry a child. It’s one example of Uterine Factor Infertility (UFI), which is a previously irreversible form of female infertility that affects as many as five percents of reproductive-aged women worldwide. A person with UFI cannot carry a pregnancy either because she was born without a uterus, has had the organ surgically removed, or has a uterus that does not function properly.
    The uterus transplantation done as part of this clinical trial is a complex investigational procedure that involves both surgical and medical management. More than 35 health care providers and clinical investigators are involved in each trial participant’s care over the course of a five- to 10-year research period, which spans IVF, transplantation, and birth, to long term follow-up after delivery and after the surgical removal of the organ after delivery.

I hope you get everything you wish for in your journey!

    I have to say, this is really impressive from a medical stand point. And a big prop to the couple for taking the risk. I can't imagine the trust they had to go with something that had never been done before. Hopefully, the technique and procedure can become more accessible to allow more people the opportunity to have a child

    This is so beautiful! What a wonderful gift. This gave her the gift of motherhood.
    Absolutely blessed. God Bless the woman that lost her life and gave the gift of life to this couple what an amazing gesture.
    I’m currently 29 weeks along with my first baby and I never knew that there were women out there without a uterus due to being born with out one. I’m
    So happy to see that medicine has come so far to be able to give them this chance.

    • @sodanoutang6303
      @sodanoutang6303 2 года назад +1

      Just like what the name states, "donor" so it's from a donor that is either deceased or is still living. A living uterus donor that has completed her own childbearing can give her uterus for the purpose of transplantation to a female recipient. A deceased uterus donor is a female that is willing to donate her uterus after death.

These Doctors are Blessed in learning how to make this happen. I see God's handiwork all over this transplant. And as far as the woman who passed on this gift in dying, she is up in Heaven with God for all eternity. 🙏❤

      Scientifically speaking, it doesn’t. Their bodies do not produce enough progesterone to support a uterus and taking it synthetically would do more harm than good. Also, their bodies wouldn’t be able to produce enough blood to support themselves and a fetus. Their pelvises aren’t designed to stretch and spread from birth. They would literally shatter. Also, you need ovum to get pregnant, which come from ovaries, not uteruses. The uterus is simply the “housing“, so to speak. Also, their body would attack the foreign uterus like a virus or foreign invader that it thinks it is. This isn’t meant to be harmful, just informative.

      2:40 the doctor says they have to connect the existing vagina to the donor uterus. I’m not sure that bottom surgery necessarily creates an anatomically correct vagina. Something to consider maybe…

    • @sau2949

      I doubt it would work, the female has every piece to connect to the uterus

    • @kristingallo2158

      No , male pelvis is different than female. Make pelvis is missing joints that enable fetal growth.
