- Tokyo, JAPAN - 1985 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Event - Medal award ceremony where Katarina Witt of East Germany won the Gold; Kira Ivanova of Soviet Union, the Silver; and Tiffany Chin of the United States, the Bronze.
Not only did Katarina Witt cry, I also cried when I heard the East Germany's anthem.
me, too. (I'm from western Germany) Beside the Russian anthem, for me it is the most touching anthem in the world... 🥲🫡

You never lived in one, all the people I know who did tells a vastly different tale than you do, because you do not comprehend nor understand what it was like to live in a country in which life had purpose, a strong purpose no matter the job you did it was a job for the state, the people, the nation your life was a purpose you contributed to the Socialist nation.
In Capitalism you live life for yourself, many people find this difficult because life become meaningless as material needs cannot provide the happiness they seek.

The DDR National Anthem was very stirring and emotional, I hope that the Communists were proud of her achievements.
Very moving.
It was hard for her to compete that year. She didn’t want to be there. She’d won the Olympics and wanted to skate as a professional. Instead she was forced to carry on and her boyfriend was posted as far away from her as possible on military service so they couldn’t see each other. She was so fed up, she put on some weight. And she still won 🙌🏻
