Fun Fact 1. "Flensburger", also simply called "Flens" in lower German is a "Bögelboddelbeer" Fun Fact 2. Einbecker is Germany's oldest still existing brewery. The Brewmaster from Einbeck later changed job and worked for the Hofbräuhaus in Munich. The beer from Einbeck (in old German: Das einpöcksche Bier") gave Bockbier it's name.
6:35 I'm not sure, but I wouldn't translate "Helles Bier" as "light Beer" (light seems wrong..) but rather as a "Pale Beer". P.S.: And by the way, "Helles" is mostly identical to "Lager". It just depends on the Brewery and Region (to avoid miss understanding the smart breweries call their beer "Helles Lager")
Germans are justly proud of their beer! So much to choose from and Martha is right it would take a lifetime to test them all! What beer is best is a personal preference and it depends on the drinker. Since a test was asked for a selection here, I think the judgments are sound.
Yes but they are also in other places too - I've been to their place in Dresden also. When I went there in München the oompah band was playing and I felt like I was in a movie it was so unreal and stereotypical old German.
Hello craftyapplepie, normally I don't like these "Brit (American...) drinks German beer/eats German sweets for the first time" videos. They are often very noisy. I like your calm way doing this. That is, what kept me watching! The "magic way" to bring the beer into the picture was a nice Idea! Thank you for sharing! By the way: Have you ever tried Bavarian Weißbier? I am told it is completly different from "Berliner Weiße". (I know Bavarian Weißbier but I don't know Berliner Weiße.) Have a good time. Peter :)
You must watch and listen to the Flensburger-advertisements in television and radio. They are so funny and characterize the northern German lifestile very well.
Ah, the Flensburger with the famous Bügelverschluss. You should watch the movie "Werner - Beinhart!" one day. It's a (mostly) animation comedy from 1990, and they do lots of beer bottle popping in there with this very style of bottle. The Bügelflasche, modeled after the Flensburger, but called "Bölkstoff" in the movie. Colloquial for "puke stuff", but not derogatory, more of an endearing term. Anyway, it's part of German culture somehow, that movie. Many guys that were young in the 90s will remember it fondly.
Wow! You start this test with one of the most herbal and bitter beer "Jever". Great! It's my favorite, but to start with it shows you have a lot courage :). So, you have a additional subscriber. Not only because of beer ;), but because of very nice videos. Thanks a lot for that.
+craftyapplepie You really want to drink Berliner Weisse with Syrup, as other noted. The bitterness in Jever is owed to the hops. Pils(Pilsener) differs from the other types of beer, as hops is added to give it the specific taste. Though there's bitter ones and smoother ones, they all tend to have a bitter after taste. Bockbier is always malty in taste, there's Doppelbock aswell. If you like the malt taste, maybe try Prinzregent Luitpold dunkel. Or try Ancdechser. Not that I really like Bavarian beers, but those two are decent. Kröstrizer Schwarzbier is really distinct, either you like it or you hate it I, guess.
Aktually, i left the company a week ago and will recieve 2 boxes (kisten) in some days :D And some Fassbrause ( try it, its a special kind of alcohol free drink based on non alc. beer)
hi Martha, perhaps you should try one of those unfiltered, natural cloudy beers (ungefiltertes, naturtrübes Bier) from mostly local small brewerys. Very tasty, like e.g. Vulkanbräu.
Try a good weizenbier from southern Germany (preferably Ulm/Stuttgart area :-) ). All my family are Schwaebisch so I'm a bit partial. Weizenbiers are not going to be bitter. Hops are added to beer as the initial malt extract/water mix (called wort) is boiled. Some hops are added early in the typical 1 hour boiling process and some hops are added late just before the boil is finished. The floral notes you were smelling come from the hops added to the beer very late in the boil. The bitterness comes from the hops that were added early in the boiling process and so release more of their bittering agents into the beer. Ironic that you, a Brit, aren't a fan of a bitter bite. It's the Brits who essentially invented the IPA (India Pale Ale) style of beer by adding a lot of hops to the barrels for the long traverse of beer shipped from Britain to India. The hops act as a preservative for the beer but also having the hops in the beer that long create a strong bitter bite common to IPA style beers. But I'm with you, I don't like a bitter beer either.
If you don't like the strong bitterness - from the hops - you might enjoy dunkles beer, which has more of a caramel note to it, though not necessarily sweet. Also, Kolsch beer, from Köln, is not generally bitter. The beer from Bavaria is generally less bitter than many other areas. If you really want to go off the deep end, try Bamberger Rauchbier from either Kaiserdom or Schlenkerla.
You are so right...nothing in the world compares to Bamberger Rauchbier ...I have only had Schlenkerla....I thought they were the only ones making it...
The next five must include Bitburger, a Kölsch, Warsteiner, a black beer, hmm, that's 4 o 5. Bitburger and Warsteiner because they sell a lot. Berliner Weiße is supposed to be drunk w/ sirup, razzie or Waldmeister. I think it's brewed differntly, so it's sour beer w/ less alc.
How old are you? Did you never went out at night here in germany? Because as good as everybody is drinking beer when they go out and its the frist time when nearly everybody is getting in touch with beer. By the way, try some Beer from small breweries. Especially the beer kind which ist called IPA (India Pale Ale) I think thats some good start to get into drinking beer. :-)
If you really wanna try "Weissbier", try some of the bavarian beers. Kindl isn't the best example for that type. Also Jever is the most bitter "Pilsener". Best beers in my opinion are "Augustiner Hell" (helles Bier), "Benediktiner" (Weissbier), "Veltins" or "Krombacher" (Pilsener).. Also "Mönchshof Kellerbier" and "Pott's Landbier" are great - not really sure in what kategory to put them. But give it a try if you want ;-)
If you dont like Pilsner-Beer cause its too bitter for your taste try Weizenbier (wheet beer?) instead. You can get Weizenbier(often also called Hefe Weizen) in a bright clear variante or darker. Paulaner and Erdinger are probably the most known ones.
Hy and greets from germany,,nice test, the berliner wisse is the original sour style and must be mixed with sirup or juice :) also is a HELL bier in our country not a light beer, its a mild taste beer ;) nice to see a girl who tests beer!
Einbecker: schmeckt noch viel besser, wenn man es irgendwo "vom Fass" bekommt. Btw: before the Münchner Hofbräuhaus was founded, people in Munich actually imported a lot of beer from Einbeck.
Nice selection for the start! In that way you can make a hundred videos or even more. Berliner Weiße always get some interesting reactions. But on a hot day with some sirup it is the most refreshing drink I can imagine. I like the bitters best, especially Jever.
Brave, charming, clever, funny or just Martha :)) You may have noticed the number of subscribers? 3.000 is near..😉😊 And if you can manage it, you may look up for funny/crazy names of germ. vine! You don't have to drink the vine..😊 Good luck with part two! 🍻
You have to try Hachenburger Pils as well, it's from my area (the beautiful "Westerwald") and probably the nicest beer to ever exist;) Really like your videos👍
I am glad you liked the Bavarian the most...hopefully, you have as Franconian for the 2nd round... You seemed to be enjoying the making that one a lot...thank goodness for assistants,,,
In my case it's just the other way round. As coming from Northern Germany, I like beers like "Jever" or "Flensburger" most. It's the taste of this part of the country. But I understand, that people who normally drink no beer at all don't like it.
ElRackadusch And that's why there are so many different beers in Germany, anybody should find his favourite. No need to make a contest which one ist the best or which part of Germany has the better ones...
I only Drink Kölsch because its my local beer (Obvs because I live in Cologne :D). I could never even try Altbier even if I wanted to because its the local beer of Düsseldorf. 😂 I have to taste some local Weissbier in München though if I ever visit again.
The Reinheitsgebot itself is not a law. right. But you make it sound like in Germany one could brew beer any way you like. Its not true . You must brew beer after the definition of the Reinheitsgebot. otherwise you are not allowed to call it "beer". see: archiv.jura.uni-saarland.de/BGBl/TEIL1/1993/19931400.1.HTML
2 Pils(ener) and not 1 Kölsch 😢😢😢 (i'm from Cologne) or even a Weizenbier 😢 Shame on you for the bad research...but nevertheless the video is a great fun and i enjoyed it. Great outtakes at the end... bottoms up - oder wie in (Nord-)deutsch: Kopp in Nacken 😁
You are comparing apples with pears! You cannot compare different beer styles even if they are brewed in the same country. Every beer style has got its own character. And please let me give you a word of advice: this is not a suitable glass for a beer tasting. Note: each beer style will need a different kind of glass. Anyways, nice job. You are a lovely person :-). Greetings from germany! I hope my English isn't that bad! :-) Cheers!
@craftyapplepie Try "Vitamalz" ;) de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamalz And i like the "Michey Mouse Picture" in the Background !!! 8:33 Houston, we have a Problem ;)
The camera angle on this one is weird. With the huge beer bottles in the front and the small Marta sitting behind it, it looks like she's about as tall as a 10 year old child (and 10 year olds shouldn't drink beer!)
Friesisch herb. Wie das Land so das Jever :D
Jever Fun Alkoholfrei :D
+thelastretrofan dannis das land aber ziemlich eklig :D
+julian mein beileid xD aber hat sich ja ganz gut etabliert...
Alkoholfreies Bier ist wie Porno im Radio :p
En Tannezäpfle isch schon was gutes :D
Ihhhh Jever D:
Dat Mädel war doch am schluss Besoffen
for a non-beer drinker, Jever and Bock-Bier is a tough choice :D
Everything looks big in your hands. We should meet. :D
Fun Fact 1. "Flensburger", also simply called "Flens" in lower German is a "Bögelboddelbeer"

Jetzt hab' ich Bock auf ein kühles Flens. :D
you also have to try Mönchshof Original and Köstritzer Schwarzbier :)
Ok cool, thanks for the suggestions. I am very curious about the Schwarzbier. :)
+craftyapplepie and take some "Kölsch" its from cologne
Mönchshof
kostrizer sucks & monchshof is like the king of schwarzbiers there is your yin & yang for you
Mich würde so sehr interessieren, wie der Film weitergegangen wäre, wenn du die Bierprobe noch eine Stunde weitergeführt hättest ! :-)
Locker kotzend in der Ecke
You are excellent at describing the different tastes/nuances of the beers. Love watching this :)
6:35 I'm not sure, but I wouldn't translate "Helles Bier" as "light Beer" (light seems wrong..) but rather as a "Pale Beer".

I love German Beer and dunkel is my favorite type - I love the Hofbrauhause Dunkel.
Do you mean the famous Hofbrauhause in München? I was there too ^-^, although when I arrived the band stopped playing. :O
Yes but they are also in other places too - I've been to their place in Dresden also. When I went there in München the oompah band was playing and I felt like I was in a movie it was so unreal and stereotypical old German.
This video gives me the ASMR ... you have a very calming voice!
Oh, perhaps I should release that evening meditation CD after all. :) :)
First CD is called 'A Brit in Germany reading a German Telephone Directory'.
THAT WOULD BE SPIFFING
Hello craftyapplepie,
normally I don't like these "Brit (American...) drinks German beer/eats German sweets for the first time" videos. They are often very noisy. I like your calm way doing this. That is, what kept me watching! The "magic way" to bring the beer into the picture was a nice Idea! Thank you for sharing!

You must watch and listen to the Flensburger-advertisements in television and radio. They are so funny and characterize the northern German lifestile very well.
I think I recall a Flensburger advertisement about fishing, but I can't be sure... I'll look for some on YT in my lunchbreak. :)
Taste Blackbier like "Ducksteiner" oder "Köstritzer". Hell means Weizenbier ...
I remember my first Time...it was a beautiful Summer Afternoon back then when I were fourteen :-)

nice I waited so long for this one :P I was on holidays and could not see your videos *sad*
Flensburger is my favorite. Not only because i've worked for the company, but i really like the taste
Does this also mean you got free Flensburger? ;)
Aktually, i left the company a week ago and will recieve 2 boxes (kisten) in some days :D And some Fassbrause ( try it, its a special kind of alcohol free drink based on non alc. beer)

I also like your bottle opening technique, quite similar to mind. I'm always finding bottle tops on the kitchen floor the next day!!!!
+Steven09Z oh thank you. :D they can be quite sharp to step on without any slippers on. 😮

Thanks Lisa for your comment. :) There are so many beers to try out. :D
I am glad you liked the Bavarian the most...hopefully, you have as Franconian for the 2nd round...
You seemed to be enjoying the making that one a lot...thank goodness for assistants,,,
Assistants are a god send in making these videos. :) Afterwards they help me finish the beer as well (I can't drink all that myself). ^-^
Where's the third lion ? Maybe its in the nighthouse 🤣🤣
LOL... love it :) And you even got my name right ;)
You know...the Spilling of Beer is not seen well in Germany ;-)
Chimseer ist meiner Meinung nach das beste.
Nächstes mal würde ich ein augustiner probieren.
One can only assume your assistant helped tidy up the left over beer :)!
+Steven09Z we had a small party afterwards to finish everything. :)
Kölsch ist KEIN Bier !
Anna unterwegs Kölsch ist Wasser

First Beer Jever, great start, my favorite Pilsener :)
No Franconian beer included? How shocking. I don't drink beer, but in Franconian Swiss (starting east of Bamberg) they have so many breweries...
Jever from a latte macchiato glass,...what more can you ask for? ^^
omg, Einbecker
Danke für deinen Kommentar und dass du mitteilst welches Bier du magst. :)
I really like these videos!

Was für Kölsch magst du denn? Hier bei uns gibt's eher Pils ;-)
Nice IKEA glasses I see!
As a non-beer drinker, I was a little short on beer glasses... but the IKEAs did a good job. :)
The "Reinheitsgebot" isnt a law and was never one.
It is simply the german understanding what is needed to make a good beer.
The Reinheitsgebot itself is not a law. right. But you make it sound like in Germany one could brew beer any way you like. Its not true . A "Bügelverschluß" is always a good thing, only premium beers have those :-)
Dat is nen Plöppverschluss
Berliner weiße isn't a Beer ... its a kind of raw beer before you brew it to the end and you normally drink it with fruitSirup ...
i think you like Helles bier from bavaria!
3:01 U are using a "can opener" btw 😉
It is not bitter! It called Herb! :D
A little hint: instead of the tin opener use a bottle opener (probably you have one on your knife)
+Cyanakrli I cannot and I was born in Germany. Well, I don't like beer anyway. Such a bad German :P
A real bottle opener has a different shape but the job was done. :)
No threat to become a Cicerone, but I would love to take her home to meet mom!
can you german candy test? Hanuta

Chiemseer beer... Its says "hell".. :D
Berliner Weisse is mixed with sirup.
since 1888 :) that's not old for a german beer.
you have to try augustiner!
you must try more southern beers. I´m not that big of a fan of these northern herbal beers either
Ok, more southern beers are on my wishlist.
Weizen und kellerbiere sind nicht so herb aber geschmackvoll ich glaube die schmecken dir am besten! 😊👍
WHATTO RATHER 🍺 🍻 🍺Yah.
I was waiting for Becks the whole time :D
Wieso sollte man Wasser testen bei einem Biertest?
Beck's is nix deutsches
Try Beck's i'ts good beer from the weser.
Hopefully the water is not directly taken from the Weser. ;)
I love it. like your laughing. and smile. bye.
Next time try some Weizen bier (not Weiss) it's delicious
You sound like a beer expert LOL
;) That was quick - after 5 beers I am an expert. ^_^
Hefe ist gesund. Sie enthält viele B-Vitamine. Daher sollte man Bier ungefiltert trinken.
You Need to try urkrostritzer Tische nicestmof Themall
Mixing beer with stuff? What?
Einbecker Ur-Bock is tasty
your voice was very low that i could barely hear you im sorry to say that but the idea was great well done
Ikea-Glas 😂👌🏼
ein volk ein reich ein bier
Das flenst!
you should try Austrian beer, it's even better! :D
Oooh, good idea, have to keep an eye out for an Austrian beer.
I don't feel like you like beer.
I'm not a beer fan, or an alcohol fan. :)
@craftyapplepie
Try "Vitamalz" ;)
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamalz
And i like the "Michey Mouse Picture" in the Background !!!
8:33 Houston, we have a Problem ;)
berliner weisse needs a shot of sweet syrup.
Mmm, I imagine that tastes delicious.
You’re the best lol
wheres the bitburger?

ı love you deuctland girl
Warum sagst du etwas über das Deutsche Bier und kennst nicht mal das Englische?
Das macht keine Sinn, weil du keine Bezugsgröße hast...

I didn't notice whilst filming... at least the bottles are clear to see. :-)
neeeein das Flens ist nicht geploppt neeeeein
