Hey everybody! Our new acoustic covers album 'Escape' released yesterday on Bandcamp and we're soooo excited to share with you this acoustic cover of The Whole Of The Moon by The Waterboys... It's track #6 on the album and it's a song we've wanted to cover for about a decade...
As far as lyrical content goes, this song might be the greatest example you can find. Every time we listen to it we're just floored by the confidence and brevity Mike Scott employs, and yet how clearly the sentiment and imagery comes across to the listener. It not only perfectly conveys a feeling of inadequacy and struggle, but also manages to weave in a sense of location, time period and even costume... it makes us mad with jealousy to hear it, which is an irony we hope would not be lost on Mr Scott. 🤣
We spent a lot of time trying to think how to incorporate that incredible horn solo in the middle of the song: the overlapping parts are a thing of beauty and part of the reason it's taken us so long to get to this song is, we were never quite sure how we were going to get around it. Cutting it out just wasn't an option, since it's one of the most glorious parts of the arrangement, so we decided to go as low-tech as we know how: Breaking out the 'Ba Ba Baaaas' for another round of vocal trumpeting (not a euphemism)!

This is such a wonderful song Matt and Sophie, a real reminder of days gone by for me, and I have to say that the slower pace than the original really makes it stand out. Beautifully realised my friends, really outstanding. I hope you both had a lovely time over the festive break, and that 2022 is very very nice to both of you.

The year is going well so far - we did get a turn on the covid machine early on, but you can hardly blame the year for that. However, you certainly can blame Mancunian mouth-breathing wedding guests... so that got us through the worst of it. Well, that and the booster ;)
@@TheDistanceDuo LOL, I thank you! I was in my early twenties when this first came out!! It did sink its hooks in, one of the most glorious, revelation-like, vocal hook-lines ever in my opinion. My Mrs. would totally agree with you about the Mancunian issue - she's from Liverpool LOL! (You know what "they" say though: "You live and learn - or you don't live long!")

Every time I went to 'home' tonight, RUclips kept offering me this video.That's maybe a dozens times. I don't know why; I don't know the band, I don't listen to The Waterboys or acoustic covers of anything on here. I mainly watch politics or history videos. Eventually, I clicked on it because I thought it must keep popping up for a reason. I was right. The reason was because it's superb.
As a bit of a guitar picker myself, I can see your playing isn't especially complex and I'm so glad. Flashy pickers don't impress me much, doing what's right for the song does. And you did exactly what was needed to allow the beauty of your voices to carry the tune.
When I saw the uke I thought, "Oh no, here we go, another ukulele destruction of a good song". But no, it fitted perfectly.
Thankyou both for your lovely music and for reminding me about a great, great song.

Loved this song since I first heard Simon Mayo play it on the Breakfast Show. Immediately went and bought everything they'd ever recorded, and never regretted it.
