She is 1) justifying and excusing her behavior, 2) Revictimizing the teen, her father, and thinking human beings by saying things could have been handled between them (a little late for that!!), 3) acting like policy decisions are in the public purview (a gross mischaracterization of the process and minimization of her responsibility), 4) failing to take responsibility for her actions which includes the expected and unexpected consequences of her actions, 5) failing to recognize the lived realities and experiences of others, a behavior highly associated with narcissistic personality disorder. Her statement represents these things AT A MINIMUM.

Natalie Cline admitted at the beginning of the interview that the father who was concerned was told the student in question was a girl. Obviously, he didn't believe it nor did Cline. Her intention was to have a "policy discussion" but she posted an unaltered image of students at the school with the clear intention of calling this particular student out. Had the student been trans, would they have been undeserving of protection? Cline could have taken any number of different steps to address her concerns prior to posting on social media. She could have determined the gender of the student without creating this drama. This situation is exactly why speculating about who may or may not be trans is unhelpful. There have always been tomboys and it's no surprise to find one playing sports. If so many people could be wrong about this one student based on appearance, then how can they trust their concerns overall are valid and not masked bias? How could Cline be so unsavvy about social media and so unaware of what would happen with her seemingly neutral caption given the political climate. Cline admits that the student is a victim, but she's not taking responsibility for the fact that she's the one who victimized this student with her actions. She doesn't get a free pass because she says says she didn't mean any harm. She did harm regardless of what she intended, and her apology doesn't go far enough into the responsibilities of accountability. She doesn't get to claim victim status because this situation she created collapsed around her feet. At the very least she had demonstrated a lack of judgement that, rightfully so, people should question her effectiveness in her current position. Lastly, trans students are also students who need to be protected. She could start by referring to them as trans girls rather than boys. This doesn't negate her position but it lies at the heart of this situation and how she wound up in hot water. When she thought the student in question was a "boy", she lacked empathy and objectified the situation (and student) to start a conversation. She didn't see a human. She saw an ideological threat. Turns out her eyes deceived her. Turns out the threat was led by her charge. If this interview is any indication, her heart has deceived her as well. The community deserves someone who can lead with compassion and empathy in spite of concerns. Had her heart been on protecting students in general, she likely would have made wiser choices, starting with not posting images of any student to be held up for derision, ridicule and mockery for being who they are. Again, there are so many other choices she could have made to have the conversation she clearly feels is necessary and even to answer the gender question that lies at the heart of this particular situation.
Lastly, personally I'm not a fan of cancel culture. We shouldn't silence people just because they cause a stir. However, it's her responsibility to navigate the turbulence that she has created. She has lost the faith of her party and her colleagues due to her choices. Is this the proverbial straw breaking the camel's back? It's not that she's outspoken, it's how she chose to speak out, at least in this situation. I really wish that she had taken the time to really think through her approach in this interview. It's unwise to try and spin this as a political conspiracy against her personally when her actions demonstrate such a clear lack of judgement. She did great harm in her efforts at "transparency." This interview does not, at least to my mind, inspire any healing. Is there no one in this situation that can help provide much needed empathy, support, compassion and accountability? As the student's father said elsewhere, students sometimes commit suicide in situations like this. There's a lot more at stake here than Natalie Cline's career and it's not clear to me that she actually gets that. Very disappointed in this interview.

She keeps saying she didn't KNOW whether this student was a biological girl or a trans student, but that's exactly the point. Setting aside how obviously wrong it would be for her to bring this bullying down on ANY student (which she also doesn't seem to get), she obviously could have and *should* have gotten more information first. Instead, she thoughtlessly posted in a way that she should have known would bring down bullying on an innocent kid.

The intent was never about the girl the intent was to push her transphobia on others. Imagine if that was a trans child and the hurt she may have suffered.to pretend that is about the children is just so lame. Ask the other girls what they think.

"I am completely sorry for the negative direction that it took, I am deeply sorry". But she's not sorry for the passive aggressive accusation.
… and she again referred to the girl as "it". No wonder the parents didn’t want to meet with her phony azz.

Don't know this woman or her past. BUT She's not wrong when she says "we're not allowed to even have a discussion on the issue". She's 100% correct. Now when she brings in a specific child as the focus of her discussion, that's 100% NOT OK. That's putting the focus on one person, a child, and as a mother and grandmother she should 100% know better. There are SOOO many issues related to trans and we need to discuss them. Some of the issues involve trans people competing in sports but that's not all. WE as a society are WORSE OFF when we silence discussion by silencing them, canceling them and otherwise shutting them down. A PERSON is 100% NOT A BIGOT by simply asking questions or having difficult discussions. The lack of tolerance in this country to have difficult conversations has to stop. This country was founded on freedom of speech and being able to discuss difficult topics without fear of repercussions. If you don't agree with that, you need to go study the constitution and the pre-history of the USA as well as world history. TYRANTS SHUT DOWN DISCUSSIONS THEY DON'T LIKE. TYRANTS ARE 100% NOT IN LINE WITH AMERICAN VALUES AND PRINCIPLES!

Having discussions on this issue is exactly what her opponents don't want to happen, hence she is being shut down. The mistake she made in posting this photo is the excuse that is being used to stop her, not the real reason. The bill that allows males to use females spaces, such as locker rooms and restrooms, is just one example of things she has opposed.

having discussions on these issues is exactly what they want to stop. Her mistake is an excuse for them to go after her once again. One of the things that she has opposed is allowing males into female spaces, such as locker rooms and restrooms, which some describe as descriminatory. She definitely made a mistake, for which she apologized. But, to stop the work she is doing to protect Utah's children because of it is mob mentality. But, the mob seems to reign in Utah now.

@@gefil8781 I’m sure you were reveling from WITHIN in the mob mentality of the trans bathroom bill a week ago. Sucks to be on the other side, doesn’t it? THIS situation is exactly what happens when a conversation is bypassed and someone (Kline) goes for the jugular instead. She lit the match and got burned. Now she needs to have the grace to stop making this about her and resign. Her political career is over.
