As a faithful fan of the AAM and Christopher Hogwood since they began, it is so heartening to see that the group is still as wonderful as ever, now in the safe hands of Richard Egarr.

A great bond of trust existed between the ensemble members and the harpsichordist/conductor, for all to perform at this level of excellence. I've often wondered how one could direct with one hand and play with the other, but what happens when both hands are needed? No one missed a beat! 🎶🎵

Great attention to detail - a very original interpretation. Spectacular performance from a very skilled ensemble directed by a phenomenal harpsichordist and conductor. I like the continuo he was providing a lot - learning to do that myself - though I doubt I'll get up to that level! Anyways, spectacular video!

The sinfonia is absolutely wonderful, and marked Tempo ordinario -- don't know why everybody takes it so fast. It's a long piece however you slice it, but exquisite.

Another wonderful variation of this JSB Canata which I love to death. The Gustav Leonhardt is equally beautiful too. its all about splitting hairs but for the audience that wants a challenge should listen to the Leonhardt cantana too. I love this one, but I'm also diverse...

Too fast ! Slow it down and let the Music breathe ! I recommend the Recording by The New Irish Chamber Orchestra at St. Patrick's Hall Dublin Castle c. 1977 under the definitive Direction of John Beckett.

I must ask this, I noticed that they are performing at A=432 instead of A=415 (which is what I've heard it performed by many other baroque orchestras seeing as it was published, or first performed, in 1725) [And also, the pitch in Germany in the 18th century was A=415] So I must ask: Why use classical instruments instead of baroque instruments?

I apologize for my use of temperament when I meant pitch, but I believe the point still stands in that both were wildly variable. Temperament more often based on the composer's/performer's preference, it seems.

The reason for the Classical instruments in this performance were that this clip was part of a concert demonstrating the birth of the symphony from its origins in the sinfonia to cantatas such as this through to Haydn ( you can buy the CD if you like because AAM recorded the programme). A choice had to be made about whether to use Baroque or classical set up as it would have been impractical to swap from Baroque to classical within the same concert . The winds effectively dictated the pitch and instruments in this case as it’s not particularly advisable to play a Haydn symphony on a classical oboe or horn. I hope this answers the questions and somewhat snide remarks from above! 😃
