- Multistyle violinist and champion fiddler Mari Black shares her "Tune of the Month" for August 2022: a rockin', zesty reel, "Reel Beatrice", played here in the French Canadian style she first learned it (though versions of this tune exist in MANY different styles!).

Tank you wow verry nice song and verry nice energy
What a wonderful performance - first time I've heard this tune, ever. So energetic, I can only aspire ...
Great technique. ❤😊
Thanks @radar200! I'm glad you're enjoying the video!
Fabulous!
LOVE your videos so much! I recognize this tune from growing up in Cape Breton, but it definitely has a "French feel" to it to my ear.
I completely get what you're hearing, @joannemacdonald5400! I "feel it French" too :) So fun how these tunes travel all over the place, isn't it??
Awesome Mari as usual! Thank you.
Yay, so glad you like the tune, @lindabohm8895!
Love it!!
You fucking killed it with this one. Your triplets are 🔥
Haha, thanks @sethkinle2254. They're certainly fun to play! :)
Ms. Black, I first listened to you play a Skinner tune. Sarona, I believe. You are probably aware that there are recordings of Skinner himself playing some his tunes. I just want to say how glad I am that I've heard your version of his tunes. Fun composer, but to put it politely as I can, his technique is dated. His contemporaries obviously liked his playing, but I'll stick to yours.
Aww, thanks @friedfish69. :) I do love Skinner -- his tunes AND those amazing wax cylinder recordings (there are ones of Brahms playing the piano too, also amazing! Have you heard them?). Definitely seems like a bit of a miracle that we are able to hear people from the 1800's play, especially on such delicate "technology"! I always try to imagine what Skinner would play like if he had all the advantages of modern instruments/bows and recording tech, and then play as close as I can to what that might be. I'm honored you're enjoying the tunes!
