- 11000 lampionów nad Poznaniem . O godzinie 21.00 w okolicach ul. Ewangelickiej zebrali się poznaniacy , aby ustanowić rekord Polski w puszczaniu lampionów . W niebo poleciało aż 11000 lampionów !

For the record, I'm American, and I think this is one of the most beautiful, breath-taking events I've ever seen. How wonderful it must be to look up at all those twinkling lights and feel part of a greater whole. Thank you so much for sharing.

I'm Slavic but I think it's good to borrow Asian (Chinese) tradition to celebrate what is good: nature and love. In Kupala night We jump over the campfire but the lanterns are so magic and beautiful that I think We can celebrate in this way too.

@ZNahum81208 Let's skip the science and hit the statistics then: Given the few thousand lanterns just in this shot (fairly small sample size to be sure but it's what we have) did you see ANY catching fire and plummeting to the ground? Didn't think so. It takes a reasonable wind (above 10mph or so) to tilt the lantern far enough for the flame to touch the paper and it only touches the paper low on the bag. The paper is also treated with a fire retarder that won't allow it to burn out of control.

@blackXSpr depends where they do that, if is around a desert area with no wind ok but I've seen some crashing against houses, powercords and trees, is not a fireball but the thing that burns in the balloon keeps burning for long time, even after the crash or if it turn to ashes.

These festivals have been happening for thousands of years, they inspired the scene from 'Tangled'...not the other way around
Although the area grew more stable later, the activity of flying Sky lanterns remained and became a local custom. Today, flying the Sky lanterns has become a symbol of prayers to the gods for their blessings. The sight of thousands of Sky lanterns carrying peoplesm,wishes and slowly floating into the night sky is a sight to behold

Re: Anyone who complains that this is littering or a fire hazard: Duh, that's why they're biodegradable (made only of sugar paper and compacted hay) and are released over the river, so that if any come down (which they don't until they stop burning) they are extinguished safely.

I think Noc Kupaly is a wonderful old tradition worth being populated. And I wish more people in Poland celebrate it instead of Noc Swietojanska or Valentine's Day.
I don't want to see this celebration as a reason to state some kind of Polish Record.

@blackXSpr Is beautiful, brought ppl together, not a question about it but the problem is not polution is fire. During June in Brazil, ppl used to do that to comemorate St. John festivities and because of the ballons we had major fires in the woods. Today we face that as criminal (we want to save the jungles and forests and the animals there). Off course there's some ppl that still does that. Years ago we almost had a big airplane crash because of that beauty.

The Sky lanterns are also known as the Kong Ming lanterns. Legend has it that the lanterns were the invention of Zhuge Liang (Kong Ming was the name of Zhuge Liang upon reaching manhood) of the Three Kingdoms Period, who utilized the same principles as that used in hot-air balloons to float the lanterns as a means of communicating military intelligence.
