It is just awesome that Adam has been able to write a song that sounds like what would have been a Beatles huge hit back in the 60s. Not an easy task but he achieved it perfectly. Congrats and RIP.
Maybe not 1960's but likely early 1970's. The Beatles had their most success after 1964, which is when this movie supposedly takes place. The British Invasion had just started in the US in 1964. During one scene when they are being interviewed by Clint Howard, "Jimmy" said his influences were Dion and the Belmonts, which sort of fits the right time frame of many of the Wonders songs as being sometime around the late 1950's to early 1960's.

@@jeffburnham6611 I would say it does have a ‘64 vibe. The Beatles became very popular here in the states in 1964 and immediately inspired scores of imitators, of which the Wonders would’ve just been one. The early 70s sound had a lot more polish and production to it compared to the beat rock sound of the early 60s which this song is inspired by.

It was genius, how he tapped into about twenty years of oldies nostalgia from the saccharine fifties, through the Beatles, distilled progressions and familiar phrases, but then presented a totally fresh, novel, original song that just plain works. It would certainly have been a hit, in those days. I will be very surprised if any of the Daisy Jones &6 songs make much of an impression, next to this classic, though it began as a simulation.
This has Beatles, Bryds and a dash of 70s power pop written all over it. Such a great song.

There's really not a bad song on the album. I've listened to it more times than I can imagine!
LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great one-hit wonder!!! ♥♥♥♥
Thank you Tom Hanks for this love letter to the Beatles. Amazing film, amazing cast. Pure Genious
This sounds like a Beatles song wow!
Essa música é um patrimônio né gente
'60s songwriting with '90s production, it's basically a power pop song lol
Lol
Make sense given Fountain’s of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger wrote the tune and Mike Viola is singing
um som legal obrigado mae por me mostrar as coisas do seu tempo
♥️ this song is so underrated
Genuinely great pop song
RIP Adam. God of melodies.
Allways makes me smike. One of the best bands ever to be recording
The bass is killing
Foutains of Wayne! RIP Adam Schlesinger - this is a great song in any era.
Dick Clark and Casey Kasem agree.
I've watched the extended version and now I can't go back to the theatrical release version. So much richer and complete.
Today i got to watch this movie again after years and i still love it.💜 I had to come and listen to this piece of artwork
the random hand added onto tom hanks face always makes me laugh
love this move, film, song. all the feelings it evokes. the song is perfect.
Regardless of all the nit-picking comments, if Adam didn't write this incredible song, there was no "That Thing You Do"! Thank you Adam and RIP.
This song has a 60s vibe mixed with the Beatles. It's so catchy that I instantly know the song's entire lyrics after the first listen.
The borrowed chords and secondary dominants make this sound so Beatles-y on top of the vocals, guitar tone, and beat. Excellent song writing
I REALLY LOVE THIS SONG
This is the kind of music that I grew up with ! 😅❤
This and Pop! Goes My Heart are great songs.
Pop Goes My Heart = the 80s hit that never was
That Thing You Do! = the Beatles hit that never was
Two of the best “fake” period songs for sure haha.
Amazing song for a movie band. Probably the best ever
I will always love this song.
