- It's time to visit old London town again and 221B Baker Street, home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and open a new case for - Crimes and Punishments.
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is the latest installment in the Holmes series (from developers Frogwares and published by Focus Home Interactive) and gives you the chance to solve six new, gripping cases. This time with a large empahsis on freedom of choice, how you play the game and the decisions you make will not only determine whether you merely see that justice is done but will also influence your charater's reputation and what consequences arise.

been thinking about playing this game, just wasn't sue how it would feel. your review has laid many of those to rest. having "video game ADD" as my friends put it, it is difficult to find and stick with a single game sometimes....so we'll see

I've been playing it, I've had quite a jolly bit of fun with it, and as a fan of the original work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, this game does a good job putting you into the world of Sherlock Holmes. It's such a shame that Devil's Daughter seems to have strayed back away from what made this game great :( This game is the standard which the developers should base future games off of.

Not at all sure if i liked this better than the last one. The puzzles were way more challenging there compared to C&P, tho I did like opening locks in this one :) I liked the variety of characters n specially stories + numerous different endings. The testament was differend but in a good way. I liked how they used sherlock's potential on a sorta villainish kinda way, what with the very cold,manipulative and narsistic style not so far from his character features in the books, even tho in the end it was about a bigger picture,which was this one big story building the whole game up. I was left with one question tho with C&P..what was up with our former female wrestler looking at our window from start till end?? At first i thought it'd be related to one of the cases but only got that short amusing moment in the end? :P

Actually I would think so! They really livened up the character from the slightly less exciting and more reserved Holmes in previous games. The mysteries are easy to follow if you know where to look for clues and how to navigate your case files, which I am sure would be the case even if the game didn't feature Sherlock Holmes!

This seems like a well-thought out and informative review, but perhaps too informative. I think part of a good review is minimizing the amount of new content being shown, i.e. spoiled, that can support the voiceover. It's kind of an art form, the same goes with movie trailers, it's counterproductive to give away or show too much of the movie before seeing, especially if the review is good and you're likely to see it. I was forced to skip 90% of this review because part of the fun of the game is in the content being fresh. For example, it's fine to show Holmes walking down a generic foggy street as much as you want, but don't giveaway the introduction to the interior of the Baker St. apartment, it's rich, unique content specifically to be enjoyed by Holmes fans during a playthrough.
***** Fair enough I understand, but it also goes towards my point when even the game studio's judgment is to perhaps include too much, e.g. Baker St. apartment interior - it's a popular criticism of all trailers.
That's why I skip all the way to the end and just see the verdict. Nowadays movie and game trailers give away too much so I actively avoid them

I didn't like it as much as The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, it lacks the immersiveness of a complete story, it's just disparate cases involving a bit of logic, but none of the background stories manage to stand out as particularly interesting.
Came here because this is Games for Gold in March. Looks good and the price will be right!!!

Good review, right up until you totally spoiled the outcome of the first case. =(
Ack! Sorry about giving something away- I didn't mention any suspects or the clues that led me to a 'better' conclusion, so there's still the important stuff to discover by actually playing. And if you do push on beyond the first apparent conclusion, you still have to discover and choose between the other options. No video shown i the review goes beyond 50% of the first 50% of cases intentionally to not show anything that would spoil the game :)
he didn't spoil it, he just said that at the beginning of the case u will find a suspect who appears to be the culprit and u get the choice to accuse him but u can continue to get more evidence......... he didn't say who that suspect was and he didn't say whether at the end that suspect would still be accused or not
Hey guys, about to buy this game but I have just 1 question. Does the game involves solving many cases or just ONE case?
If I can remember rightly it follows the same format as the other Holmes games and gives you about 6 cases to solve.

on psplus it was. i tried it, decided it wasn't worth my time, pretty sure i deleted it.
i would have recommended not buying it at all, better games out there your money could go towards
+wzx33 same thing i thought, gives that Noire feel to it. and that game was a breath of fresh air when it came out. i don't think it will top it of course, but i do enjoy the game's style. plus its under 20 bucks now...definitely worth the shot.

I am actually an enthusiast fan of Holmes and I'm really excited for this game, but you make it seem as if there isn't really any real decision-making, but just a linear following of the game story-line.

In other words, a game that allowed you to work a case from start to finish, WITHOUT any help whatsoever.

Afraid not. You get the freedom to explore the whole crimes scenes at your leisure and you can jump between locations at will, but no free roam. The rate at which they improve this series, maybe next time?

edwin32086 the games rotates after every month, but if you added the games to your library in that timeframe you can play the games whenever you want as long as you have a active ps+ subscription going.
never used it, but yeah its a nice deal. us pc gamers pay full price..but if you are smart you wait until a sale and get it for like 80 percent off lol

Needs a lot of fixing. Watson keeps getting in the way, the puzzles are not connected to the story or case at all, every time you click on something Sherlock points out the obvious and most of the time doesn't connect with anything. Plus it's very annoying to have to look for everything you apparently "missed" so you look for it for an hour and it ends out to be an object that has nothing to do with the case. I'd give this game a 6/10. I understand what they tried to do. They could have made better improvements. the overall structure of the game has potential. But seriously, the game annoyed me more than I actually enjoyed solving cases.

Yeah, odd conclusion, isn't it? I was being very specific about the genre > Crime games (with more of a focus on clues and dialogue than action). Also the out of 8 score is in perspective of videogames in general. Crime games with a focus on thinking really aren't everyone's cup of tea.
