I used bleach on a shelf that had been peed on by a lot of mice and my throat started to burn. Layers of dried-up urine residue contain ammonia and I think I made a little bit of chloramine gas. We backed off, opened the windows, soap-and-water washed the shelf first, and then went back in with the bleach. Alcohol is probably a better idea even for someone who isn't allergic.

Hang in there, don't give up. Don't let it beat you. I can't go into detail as it's so much. I did things I never thought I could do. Of course I ended up in the hospital from internal bleeding because this tough old broad thought I could move really heavy rock and lay block. Yeah, I did it alright. I've been exposed to lead, asbestos, rats, mice, floods, you name it. I left a beautiful home I completely restored to move to the mountains but had to get out of the city. Somehow I ended up in the middle of a drug bust with Federal Drug Enforcement Agents totally by accident. You know how they say I nearly peed myself, well yeah I get it now. I was putting money in a parking meter at the end of my block, looked up and had agents with their guns drawn with their finger up to their mouths for me to be quiet. I had my briefcase, my handbag, juggling keys, money for the meter and I basically said to myself I am done with this crap, once and for all. I've painted over neighborhood graffiti for years to keep our values up & I just couldn't take it any more. I'm done. Good luck.

Thank you for explaining the freezing sensation.
Suffering from PTSD, it took me 3 years to clean up my windows sill. Everytime I wanted to do it, I didn't know where to start and end. I just saw the dust on the stuff and the dusty curtains and all the dust around the windows, etc. And it made me think that if I cleaned up the area infront of the windows, the dusty curtains would make it dusty again. And if I took off the curtains first for washing, I would have loads of additional dust coming down on my windows sill and all around..... I don't have a vacuum cleaner and my social worker doesn't want me to buy one, because she says I must throw away at least half of my partly *new* or hardly used things before buying something new. I don't have the strength to stand up against her. She constantly forces me to throw away beloved books, wonderful yarns, beautiful fabrics, my drawing and painting materials, etc. She says, the less I have to comfort my creative needs at home, the more I will be willing to socialize with others.
She is really mad at me, because I got myself a new puppy to train to be my certified PTSD service dog. I think she was happy a year ago, when my former service dog had passed away after he was attacked by a dog hater. 😢
She's also angry about me changing my diet and tells me that other eating habits won't solve my PTSD. I believe otherwise though.
I'm feeling so bad because I have to deal with her. And I'm so glad that you have the empathy for other survivor's in your area and that you are helping those in need recover. I am also very thankful that you explain the situation some of us are caught in. This way at least the people willing to understand will make a change in their own communities and will probably also spread what they learn from you. 🙏🏻

I can’t help thinking that when you help these (new) home owners you are recovering generational wealth for the family. It’s a financial legacy that could have been lost due to mental health, neglect and lack of passing on house maintenance skills that you and your team are recovering. Homeownership and lack of homeownership becomes generational and this financial knowledge or ignorance is passed down. Selling a house in disrepair could be a small, short term financial windfall, but keeping house and land, learning and development of skills and financial knowledge/security it provides has a long lasting effect. This truely is a gift of the heart and soul.

    • @Arualiaa
      @Arualiaa 4 месяца назад

@@NikkiB7598 In this economy? You wouldn’t be able to afford a new house just from the land alone.
It’s better to put in the work and slowly renovate what you already have over the years, that way you can have a good property that you can pass down to your children.
Maybe you’re already a homeowner, but think about it from the perspective of someone who’s only ever been able to afford shitty rentals, and suddenly gets the luxury of inheriting a house… that looks like this. You don’t have the money to demolish and rebuild, passing up the chance to own a house would be idiotic, and yet… it still looks like this.
The only way to not despair is to think long term. You inherited crap, but in an economy in which people have nothing to their name, owning that crap means it’s valuable crap. You’ll do better than the generation before you, and turn this into a home for your children so they don’t have to face the same dilemma you are now.
Then again, that mindset might be incompatible with the US mentality of “can’t get too comfortable in a house because we’ll move out in 5 years, keep the walls white and bland and the property value up because it needs to look good for my future buyer” (which I never understood, it’s basically just like living in a rental and treating future buyers like a landlord) so I may be way off here.

Yahoo! I was wondering when we’d start seeing some of the new kind of home transformations (not just cleaning, but also repairing, painting, furniture rearranging, etc). Now that we’re seeing the first, I’m REALLY excited, because you picked a doozy! This house desperately NEEDS attention and care from someone who’s knowledgeable and experienced in deep cleaning and budget renovations! Thank you and Jason for helping to turn this ramshackle, abused house into a home the owners can feel proud of! I’m so looking forward to the next episodes on this renovation! Thank you!!

Wow! I can't wait to see what you do with this house. Hubby's done some gnarly cleanouts of rental units when he was a maintenance man. Rodents, mold, hoarding, janky DIY fixes that are major code violations (mostly that), he's seen a lot.
Thanks for the tip about mold. I have some stubborn spots in the shower that I'm not sure if it's mold or mildew, but they won't come out with regular scrubbing (even tried acid-based toilet cleaner to no avail). I'll try the hydrogen peroxide and see if that works.
Since this is an old house, do be mindful of asbestos. A lot of old buildings have it, especially in adhesives on the floor and walls or as insulation (a 100+ year old school I used to work at had it in the floor under the tiles and up in the ceiling where it insulated pipes). Masks are a must if you're going to be doing anything that disturbs it. Ironically, all that asbestos probably saved that house from burning down when the fire happened.
Take care of yourself and the family!

Up til now, I've been binging on A&E episodes which give me a little motivation to deal with my own hoard. I find the show to be opportunistic and I can't stand the disrespect they show to the subjects. On the surface, they seem nice but they really aren't. What morivates me is seeing the final product and getting clues amd insights about myself. I have severe limitations, no help or prospect of therapy so Im doing what I can.
Your videos came up in my feed today. Before this I didn't know you were here. What a Godsend you've been today. You are so understanding and compassionate and funny. You're so sensitive and don't make your jokes about the people you so kindly help. Some of what I've heard you say today has made me feel netter and watching your energy makes me feel a bit more capable. I have ma mouse or mice and Ive bedn too scaredvto even look what a nest might look like but now I have a better idea.
I'm in Ontario, Canada so I have no hooe of your kindness reaching me here but your videos alone are gelping me so Im grateful. Over the years, Ive reduced my hiard from stage nine to about 3 maybe. Im probably between stage 1 and 2 out of 5 now, but it doesnt seem to go away. I only live in a one bedroom apt and I do my best and achieve keepinf everything in working order and have use of all my amenities but for sure I still have too much stuff and have difficulty seeing how my stuff is hoarding and other people's stuff is just acceptable stuff. If you were abke to help me, it would only take one full day Im sure so I know it wouldnt be that bad. Of course to get through all tgese playlists youve been working at 2x soeed lol.
I think the most valuable thing I learned today what how neat the Universe is.
A&E does it to make money.
Your existamce is like the yang to a hoarder's yin. With the same autistism and ocd a hoarder has, there's someone loke you whose autism and ocd wants to clean it and maje things right. And the understanding and lack of hostility you have about it is just one more bit of proof that Soirit moves in mysterious and perfect ways.
I dont know when you'll get a chance to ses this but when you do, I hope you'll feel all the love and appreciation I have for your soul brother. I am grateful for you and for cinding your videos. I love your sense of humour. So cute ❤
P.S. I am grateful tyat you have children you're imparting your values in. You're part of contributing to humanity in a positive way and now they are too. 💖
