If you upgrade the bendix and crown to a 2016 it has a different teeth ratio not so harmful to the starter and easy ignition

Mate best to add a higher amp battery that's what l did No issues since as long as you keep bendix well lubed

Those shims are for the crown wheel play. If the crown moves more than half a tooth then you shim it to stop the play

2 years out of a 3amp battery is pretty good. Mine last abt year and a half max but then I dont ride every weekend.

Did you ever find the cause to this, I have a 2016 doing the same thing and I've brought new everything apart from bendix so far

It’s a KTM design issue from like 12 or 13 to like 16 I think then they redesigned it to make the system better. I believe just over time stuff gets in there and it just gets dirty and gunked up!

That is not a 15/16 drill bit. That's nearly an inch.

Did you figure this out? Mines doing the exact same thing cranking slow like that even with a charged up lithium battery, probably the starter at this point

Could be the starter.. might be worth a shot, I think they are only like $100. The new battery fixed mine for the most part, electric start is currently working but cranks slow at first. After riding for awhile it seems to work pretty well. This older electric start system is definitely outdated and lacking compared to the new bikes. Definitely has some design flaw.

@@lancecomstock4824 I pulled the starter apart and cleaned the brushes. Still does the same thing, the battery was dropping to like 4-5 volts while cranking. I am going to try a battery from my crf450x that starts that bike no problem.

@@david92xj sounds good, keep me posted on how that goes. I’m curious too now that you say that. I have a new beta and I wonder how the lithium battery would do in the ktm!

@@lancecomstock4824 even if the battery was okay, I wonder if a junk starter trying to spin the motor over, but not able to because it's just old would strain the electrical system that hard. I may try swapping the batteries tonight, I'll keep you posted

My 2012 does this same exact thing. Slow crank like it's a bad battery, but I have a new lithium in mine. Any updates on fixes?

What year is the bike? Why did you drain the oil? I

2013, you have to drain the oil because you are taking off the engine case and it will leak out unless you lay the bike on its side.

@@lancecomstock4824 it’s not like a 4 stroke, the combustion chamber is separate to the gearbox/transmission. You don’t have to drain the oil as there is no oil in the combustion chamber plus there is a seal on the crankshaft so nothing would come out
