One caveat on writing scenes out of order: the more i wrote, the stronger my writing got, and the more i understood my characters motivations and story structure. Writing out of order would have robbed me of the benefit of all that growth for the later, more exciting scenes.
Also, i don't really know what how seemingly unimportant scenes can (in retrospect) inform the trajectory of key moments that you're hungry to get to.
    Especially for pantsers.
If you can commit to writing in order, i personally would recommend it.

    • @SwedishTourist

This is exactly why I’m refraining from even thinking too much about the key scenes for the middle/late part of the story. (I’m a pantster, needless to say)
Plus, longing to write them makes me want to continue.

It is a good thing you can go back with your strong writing and rewrite the scenes.

Tip 7 is what I’ve been struggling with for 2 half drafts and almost 1.5 years. I just kept going in too early, being unhappy with the draft, trying to power through, and then eventually giving up. Now though, I’ve outlined a lot more and feel like I’m able to see enough of the story that I’m hoping I can get back to my 500 words a day routine!

I like tip #5. I used to listen to music or a podcast when doing laundry or dishes, but I stopped. I listen to nothing but my thoughts. It makes it easier to go back to my computer and continue writing.

“Pancer”. Never knew there was a name for it, for me.
Scenes just fall on me at any time. I write them down. Only a vague plot but the scenes are funny and passionate. It was only in the second year that I realized I was writing a science fiction story! Yes, I was surprised. My 11 yr old character from Arkansas was actually a child from the planet Photon doing a Science Fair project on us! Bring a child with AI “parents “ he wanted to know what he was missing, to fill the hole that he felt. Anyway, so fun writing these scenes like when his parents took him to the dog park and he met for the first time creatures that had empathy a new feeling he had never felt before. He thinks these dogs are the highest level of life on Earth (a restricted zone). When he discovers these dogs have owners he begs his councilor to allow him to visit for a science fair project…
But my story comes in like artillery shells: explosive, funny, pathetic.
I like my stuff; they make me laugh (ok I shed tears too).
I can’t imagine putting myself on a schedule. I just don’t work that way.
Font? I use medium black ball point on yellow pad paper. I like the feel of it. Are there other writers like me out there?
