MnM = Masters n Marketing. Nice.
YOOO
Mnm = Slim Shady
A sweet pun!
I totally missed that cleverness; thank goodness for the comments section!
Pure genius.
The M&M's Minis in a tube is so nostaglic to me. I just remember them being part of my lunchbox when I was in school and just excited to hear the top pop when opening it
The tubes are great for storing quarters in. I’ve kept one in my locker at work for years
"You can put your weed in there."
Ripping the lid off then shooting other kids with it
me too!
The MnMs/Mars NASCAR schemes are some of the best looking schemes in the past few decades
Agreed. I was sad when they left the sport.
@@boomerbear7596 That was the car I always cheer for when I saw it.
Even those of us who don't like NASCAR might remember it as iconic. I didn't know it was gone.
It was an absolute joy being an Elliott Sandler fan back when he drove the M&M's 38 car. His tee's and merch were way more fun and colorful than a lot of the other driver's cars.
Yep. I'm not a Nascar fan but the Ken Schrader M&M's Pontiac Grand Prix from the early 2000s is iconic
i love that duo of Red and Yellow and their pop-culture hi-jinks in the history of some of the greatest marketing ploys involving of one of the most iconic chocolate candies in confection history ever bought in the convinience store
I love how in the movie Tommy Boy, Chris Farley character drops the m&Ms in the dashboard and he says "Don't worry, I think you're safe, they are coated in a candy shell, I'm surprised you didn't know that." 😆
😂 If it was M&M peanuts I would of had a heart attack those are my favorites.
"I think your brain has a thick candy shell." Lol I was thinking of the same scene
@@robertcuratolo5339 The peanut ones are very good! and the nutella ones maybe my favorite
@@popsmaellard725 There's a Nutella one? Where is it sold? I must acquire some for... research purposes...
@@justsomeguy5470 I remember buying some from a dollar store. My memories a bit foggy, sorry about that. But the nutella part could be just chocolate in them :((
That damn Christmas commercial is one of the best commercials known to man😅😂😂
And the other is the Hershey Kiss bell choir tree. 😄
I find one reason M&M's have managed to stay relevant beyond advertising is the fact that beyond the plain ones every type not only has a different filling but usually a slightly altered shape as well. Its easy to underestimate the importance of mouthfeel in regards to candy but by being in the game so long Mars has managed to nearly perfect it and no place do they show their expertise better than the dozens of M&M varieties they have on offer today. Each one almost feels like an entirely different candy.
The line "Purple being introduced as the first female peanut M&M had its own backlash" made me chuckle. Funny world we live in.
tell me about it lol. the world is becoming more cringe every day.
if green was male then im gay
@@glitchy_weasel Le world is in shambles.
Artificial manufactured backlash to distract from the lead in chocolate and child labor practices
More sad than funny
The Christmas commercial where Santa faints has been around for as long as I can remember, which only further cements the staying power of nostalgia.
"HE DOES EXIST!!!"
"THEY DO EXIST!!!"
.......
".......uh......Santa?"
My favourite M&M commercial of all time....
It's been around so long they put black bars on the side to make it fit onto widescreen TVs, because it predates them.
@@ACoolKidsProduction It predates them by a LONG time too. 16:9 current format started becoming available around 2004, and started becoming standard around 2008.
This commercial in 4:3 came out around 1995.
What a world we live in. "That green M&M is too seductive, those boots got to go!" 😂
I’m more amazed at how angry some people got when the green M&M wasn’t sexy to them anymore
@@TheFlock83 They weren't mad about the Green not being sexy anymore; they were mad that a company thought the candy was so sexy that they had to change it. They were expressing displeasure at a company being so up their own behinds that they forgot they sold candies and thought they were political candidates fighting for voters!
Victim of woke and me- too
I remember a commercial that boys playing baseball and one asking how he hits so well. He tells the first boy that he chews an m&m by color and that the green one is for a home run. I also remember hearing of a store at the time called “The Green Ones”
@@TheFlock83 I'm more amused by how Wokémon ambulance chasers try to sexualize a friggin candy 🤢🤮
Another chocolate with candy shell that is severely overlooked is Sixlets. Those little chocolate balls have always been a favorite of mine as well.
Sixlets, Riesen, Zero... honestly some of the best candies get the least publicity.
Sixlets might be my favorite, I cant quite put my finger on it but they taste better
Sixlets make me uncomfortable I don’t like looking at them
@@sextingwithdolphins you're weird.
Absolutely love sixlets and I love that you can get them by color at places for events too haha
M&M's are one of those candies I don't buy that often, but always enjoy them when I do! I like the classic M&M's, but I also really like the crunch of crispy and pretzel M&M's. One fond childhood memory of mine was my pharmacist mom taking the little tubes of mini M&M's and turning them into fake prescription medicine bottles for us with silly joke patient names on them like I.P. Freely which was hilarious to us as kids
Love these candies videos; it's like almost every famous candy brand has an interesting backstory.
Too bad its health destroying junk,i wouldn't eat this even if they would give M n M s to me for free.
I worked at an M&M store for a bit. One of the special things you could get at the store was customized candy that had different things printed on it. We had a whole page of what was allowed and what wasn't. No politics, no profanity, no NSFW, no drug names, no mentions of other candy brands.
All because they didn't want someone taking a picture of the customized M&Ms in a way that would "ruin their image".
Also they were sure to specify that the spokescandies were adults getting into funny adult situations in order to avoid marketing to children. I guess.
Was it the one in london
I'm surprised that it wasn't mentioned just how much of a merchandising impact the 90's rebranding of the mascots had. It's not uncommon to see merchandising of famous mascots, say Funko figures of McDonaldland characters, Chester Cheetah on T-shirts, General Mills on long, dorky pairs of crew socks. But the M&M's hit hard. Like California Raisins hard, but with at least 3 decades of longevity. That's pretty much God tier junk food mascot. They even starred in an infamous shovelware racing game. And I just love how those version of the characters embraced the living junk food aspect, effectively being low key satire of junk food mascots.
Aye, 'tis true! If ye go to an M&Ms World Store ye will see that most of the products and artwork be of the the spokescandies!
M&Ms is one of those candies I can't get enough of. Both in the commercials and the candy itself. I think the first one I saw as a kid was one where Red, Yellow, and Orange were at a mini mart "eating their own kind" with Patrick Warburton being disturbed by it. I rediscovered it years later on YT and found it just as great as ever. However while watching that, I ended up discovered a goldmine of countless M&Ms ads from different eras and different parts of the world (including the suggestive ones with green and the others taking their shells off...). And for short ads made to sell candy, they're surprisingly really good and effective with their marketing. They're pretty much right up there with GEICO's commercials if you ask me. Even in the "inclusive" era they're currently in, they still produced some decent stuff here and there. Though I wouldn't be lying if I said that they're not as great as the stuff that came before in 1995-2021. The recent super bowl ad was okay, but could've used another commercial in the middle instead of just going straight to the "put on pause" one. Would've made the whole "Maya Rudolph replacing M&M's" plot more interesting, but oh well... At least Red holding that "HELP" sign was pretty funny.
As for the candy itself, I used to be a plain chocolate m&ms only guy, but overtime I've grown to love the pretzel, crispy (though it seems to have been replaced by crunchy cookie nowadays, which is good too), and fudge brownie flavors. I still get plain occasionally, but nowhere near as often as those 3.
I like microwaving my M&M's for like 7 seconds, the chocolate just starts to melt inside the shell but it's contained until you bite it.
Anyway, always really liked peanut butter and crispy. Pretzel just wasn't the same as crispy.
RIP crispy M&Ms
Microwaving them is a good idea
Love the videos, brother. You're part of my Wednesday before work routine.
His consistency is fantastic 👍
Watch that shit on company time, yo
@@skysucker4251 Company time is reserved for number two time 😂
The crispy ones in the blue bag were my favorite as a kid in the late 90’s-early 2000’s. I stopped eating m&ms after they discontinued it & when they brought them back in the green bag, they still weren’t the same
Interesting, they still come in a blue bag over here in the uk at least🙂
Always look forward to these videos
I have a funny story about the brown M&M. I was with my family in the M&M store in New York back in 2011. I remarked to my cousin about how all the other colors had a personality, save for the brown one. That if they gave the brown one a personality, they should start by making her female since green was the only female, and that she should be more serious.
Then, during the Super Bowl two years later, there she was. I just thought it was hilarious that someone HAD to have been listening.
I don't eat these as much as I once did--you get past a certain age, gotta start watching the sugar--but I still love them. And I use it as a standard of comparison for the rate of usage of certain items: "You go through those the way I used to go through M&Ms!"
Not a big candy eater myself,, but M & M's would be among the better candies, in my opinion.
In my 1982 senior hs yearbook among the long list of questions and comments at the back of the book was the question "why don't they make blue M & Ms? Haha! I noticed as a kid that the tan color in the plain candies was never used in the peanut kind for some reason! A good way to know you were getting more of an "upscale" frozen yogurt was the selection of toppings when real M & Ms were offered and not the knockoff "Pokies"!
I’m not a huge candy eater, but m&m’s are one of my 3-4 candies I enjoy eating.
You can't say you're not huge into something only to then turn around and say you like several different types of it.
@@HOTD108_ I don’t eat them often. Was just saying when I do eat candy, I only have a couple I like. I feel sorry for people like you.
I remember comic ads from the mid 90s for m&ms, shortly after they introduced green as a character. They originally had different personalities for orange and brown. Orange was a bubbly, innocent female m&m similar in personality to the new purple one and was even featured in merchandise. Brown was a tough guy who always had his arms crossed and was basically only ever seen in those comic ads.
Blue has also changed. He was originally a blues sax player.
Crispy M&M's (not the mint kind) are the best. Fudge brownie is another good one too, but for some reason I really love mini M&M's.
Love your channel. I learn so much about a lot of companies I love. Thanks for the continued content. You deserve all the accolades.
Same I love the content
As a kid from the 90s I remember 4 main things getting me hooked on m&ms.. which I now realized was all brilliant marketing towards kids. 1, they had game boy game which I was hooked on..
2, the life sized M&m characters in the grocery story’s which were filled with m&ms
3, the mini m&ms in their plastic container
4, the nascar car.. and I didn’t even like nascar haha. It was just cool to see a candy on a race car & have the hot wheels toy
Great video! I've always liked this particular brand. You really can't go wrong with M&Ms; peanut and peanut butter have always been my go-to's. It was eye-opening for me to find out that Hershey's of all companies had a connection to M&Ms from the start.
Interestingly enough, just as M&Ms tried to do their own version of Reese's Pieces with the peanut butter M&Ms, Hershey's seemingly returned the favor with a chocolate version of Reese's Pieces instead using Hershey's branding, though I've only ever seen it as a Christmas candy.
As an Australian I grew up eating Smarties but those peanut MMS 🥰 just love them
The Pretzel and Brownie flavors are my favorites, I also really liked the limited time Honey Nut and Chili Nut flavors they came out with back in maybe 2015 or 2016.
Every April 1, my "nice prank" for April Fool's Day is I hand out to people bags mixed with M&Ms, Skittles and Reeses Pieces. Some people don't mind, while other people it drives them absolutely nuts!
I also want to let you know that my daytime warehouse office job is being eliminated, and in exchange I'm given a nighttime warehouse floor job, so I won't be able to keep up with your content anymore, but I thought I would just extend a huge thank you for providing video content was that was both educational and entertaining to listen to while doing some boring data entry. keep up the good work!
M&Ms are like the Oreo's of candy, pretty much enjoy or love every flavor I try. Their marketing has always been top tier.
Fun fact...on the Metra train line between Elgin, Il and Chicago there is a stop called Mars. It's where there was, and possibly still is, a large Mars candy factory.
Back in the day, I'd start with the brown, red & blue, then the orange & yellow, and save the green for last. I did a similar thing with Skittles, but saved the orange for last. The other thing was to try to suck on them until the candy coating melted before chewing, but that was harder to do.
You you are a Master in Main titles my friends. Love it. MinM M&M
5:33 oh man, I forgot all about that commercial. Thanks for the dose of nostalgia!
I love M&M's! I have to stay away from them or else I'll eat the entire bag in one sitting. And if that's not bad enough, I only want more after finishing off one bag! I swear I'm not addicted to M&M's. 😋
LoL I eat the entire bag in one sitting. At least there's a bigger bag now.
Agree, go for the yellow bag!
One of the many things I can look forward to on a Wednesday. Thank you sir!
To the best of my knowledge the green M&M got that reputation due to a very old ad campaign in which a baseball player mentions that’s the color he eats when he wants to hit a home run aka score.
Though that might be apocryphal.
Full disclosure, I have worked making M&Ms since the late 90’s but in no way am responding as a spokesperson for MarsWrigley.
The mini ones that come in the tube just hits different
Those coffee flavored ones are pretty awesome, just hard to find.
I tried Cookies & Scream M&Ms last fall and those are by far my favorite now, but they're a seasonal Halloween variety.
I managed a movie theatre some 10yrs ago and at the time we had an M&M's store inside next to concessions, and we had almost every type of M&M in there. And while original and peanut are the go-to, the almond M&Ms are the best imo. I can never find them in stores, I'm not even sure if they're still being made, but they were my constant snack when I was there
They make them but they're hard to find and they don't advertise them because they charge the same amount as regular m&m's for them but almonds are expensive so the profit margin is slim
I like the Salted Caramel and Brownie flavoured ones. 😋
The mint ones are so good.
I'm almost 64 and I have never, NEVER not had m&ms in my house. Right now I have a large blue jar filled with the stuff. When I was young and had a very tenuous grasp of the concept of money, I kept the value straight by working out how many of the individual packets I could buy with whatever amount I had in my pocket. It worked! Long time favorite is the peanut but I gotta give kudos to the caramel. Yummy
Love your content, very informative and addictive
Have you ever considered doing an episode on Cintas. They are the largest uniform and linen rental company in the US and growing internationally. The company’s story is quite interesting
Can't get enough of them.
Credit Billy West and J.K. Simmons for making us care about a pair of freaking candies.
The Christmas commercial stuck with me
I've always loved the Peanut Butter M&Ms. Never understood why there was never a spokes candy for peanut butter!
Because they're Gross...lol...
@@joeyd3324 To you, not to me or my family. Never cared for the regular peanut ones despite its popularity.
I mean, you can always just sum up the recent controversies as “bullshit culture wars started by weirdos” and everyone will know what you mean so, lol.
I personally love M&Ms so I will continue loving their stuff when I can (I’m diabetic so it’s not often anymore these days, alas). Also, the ones with the brownie cores are AMAZING and should be a staple alongside the plain and peanut versions forever tbh.
Can diabetics have normal candy? Don’t you go into shock like epileptics? Genuine question
@@clickbiat well the high blood sugar is mostly only an issue of blood sugars aren’t controlled otherwise, and if one is on insulin and has a decent supply, you can reasonably increase a dose to compensate. I’ve also been known to either spread out smaller serving sizes (like the ones in Halloween bags) or have a better than usual day focusing on basically replicating a keto diet for a day to justify having a little extra at the end. Like with all things diabetes diet related, it’s about knowing yourself and your body’s needs and balancing in the occasional want. It’s a bit easier for us Type 2s, but also not impossible for Type 1s.
They changed shoes. They changed shoes on a character. Granted, I blame Mars' advertising firm for putting out an intentionally culture war baiting press release so they could get all the free advertising they could from every side, but in the end... it's SHOES on a cartoon candy that most likely isn't anatomically correct.
@@mightyfilm I’m sorry, how tf were M&Ms baiting at all? They updated designs bc they wanted to. I assure you, corporations do not actually care about social issues beyond what gets them money.
@@Caterfree10 There was indeed a press release with a bunch of prosocial sounding buzzwords issued by Mars in a lame attempt to get local news outlets to drum up interest. Most likely with the intention with weirdo pundits ranting about it and then comedians picking up on that nonsense. Worked like a charm, actually. I forget the exact wording of the press release, but it felt like it was vaguely mainsplained feminist word salad processed through AI with all the understanding of those phrases some out of touch ad exec would pretend to understand. And I object to the term "redesign," because they looked exactly the same, minus one character getting different shoes. Barely even a costume change.
There was that controversy in the 1970s about Red dye #2 being carcinogenetic with the plain M&Ms, whereupon the red M&Ms were taken off the market for a while until a safer red dye could be used.
There was a consumer _rush_ for bags of plain M&Ms that still had the red dye #2 before they were gone from the shelves of retailers.
LOVE em!!! Peanut butter and plains are my faves!
Yes!! Peanut M&Ms are one of my favorite snacks too 👍
M&M is my favorite wrapper
Everytime I watch these I get cravings lol
They had one with a light blue package. It was the crispy flavor; it was so good. It was discontinued, or at least not sold in my childhood neighborhood.
Crispy and Mini tubed MnM’s are the GOAT.
Helps that they made small/kid sized pouches making them a cheap and easy part of any homemade lunch/Halloween
Always loved the Christmas commercial with red and yellow along with Santa Claus.
I like this take: focusing on specific aspects of companies.
Keep it goin.
Maybe do videos more about the founders/CEOs of companies?
I always enjoyed the commercials, like the one where red and yellow find out Santa is actually real. But my favorite has to be the ad that plays in AMC theaters where they are in a action movie
Thanks for this excellent episode a - i especially enjoy your food related episodes.
Y favorite M&M type is peanut m&ms. ☮️💟
Thanks for mentioning ET. 😁💜💓💕❤
That “So it’s that kind of a party!” Commercial cracked me up when I first saw it. I still get a laugh out of it. Wiggle wiggle wiggle.
Probably not a huge campaign but I remember the little league game where the kids in the dugout would say what color would equate what you would hit at bat with the green one being a home run. Interestingly the green one ended up being the seductive female when the spokescandies evolved.
Best thing about M&M is that their HQ is in my town and they openly have their NASCAR on display outside for anyone to look at.
So good at marketing you nearly described them using another popular candy’s tag line: Taste the Rainbow. 😂🤣
Same company owns them.
I have never forgotten that Christmas commercial. "They do exist!"
Also huge LOLOLOLOLOLOL at certain people being upset that a cartoon candy isn't as sexy
Can't get any better than the fudge M&Ms, no cap.
M&M's: "You stole our idea!"
Smarties: "You stole our idea!"
Spanish soldier who got the idea in the first place: "¡Robaste mi idea!"
Que oso!
Interestingly we have a totally different candy in the US called Smarties!
@@boomerbear7596 Yep...US Smarties are what NECCO wafers wish they were good enough to be.
And I so do love my Wednesdays because company man comes out with a new video
They’re definitely one of the better candies and have been around forever. There’s just something so simple yet great about them
M&Ms dropped their NASCAR Sponsorship of '"Candyman" Kyle Busch in 2022 after 15 years...
The alliteration in this title is something to behold
I’m surprised as many M&M commercials there have been, that there hasn’t been a M&M movie.
Doesn't get much better than a couple Peanut M&M's with a mouthful of buttery movie theater popcorn.
Snickers is having a fun campaign too. I liked the feeling hungry one that was tied into printing the mood you are in on the candy bar wrapper.
Master in marketing, lmao. Their most recent one ble wup I'm their face haha
aaah, I'm trying to give up candy and now I want M&M's! ;_; I still miss the tan ones...
Almond and peanut butter M&Ms are my favorites.
Fully agree.. peanuts the way to go. Big jug from Costco haha.
M & M’s peanuts are one of my favorites. The other? Mounds Dark Chocolate Candy Bar. Love them both! Carol from California
I don’t get them too often but my personal favorite is the peanut butter ones. I don’t think they ever got their own character though
My favorite is the mint
I'm in my mid-40s and to this day, I prefer Reese's Pieces, bc of ET. And the sound Reese's Pieces makes when you chew it, brings me back to he memories of that movie every time
I love peanut - the sweet and crunch! The M&M stores seem to be popular as well!
They did the purple one for Easter past when America was cool
Love your contact!
Very neat!
The 1995 santa commercial with red and yellow is permanently in my head. In this vid I learned that was one of their first appearances, that makes sense!
Also Billy West was the voice of red for all those years, and J.K. Simmons was yellow for a long time.
I imagine the M&M's fruit chewies had the signature little white m on them. Would have loved to see them for myself!
1907 start of Lentilky production in Czech republic. Lentilky are known as Smarties or M&Ms.
Is there any other company who started production even sooner?
Bravo on the video title 👏
The men who founded/ created the food, candy company giants that we all know, should be considered titans like the men who founded/created the oil, steel, car companies in the past.
I’m still mad they left Nascar they had such a huge following in Nascar and it gave children a car to cheer for, Merchandise to buy, and a candy to pick up at the store that you saw on that super cool looking race car. I really hope they get back into the sport someday.
i first tried peanut butter m&ms in the early 1990s. it was october, mom put out a big bowl with a mix of regular, peanut, and peanut butter m&ms, i had a friend over and we cleaned out that bowl.
You can't fail marketing a product that the whole world knows is awesome.
